Whats the point of 10 placement matches?

They already have an idea of where they want to place you - lower than before They already have an idea of where you should/could be from the sample MMR of the prior season

If you were already placed before, why not just have 3 placements games rather than fucking 10?? No point in going 8-2 just to get tanked a tier, wasting time and games where it really doesnt matter

If you've never been placed before, then sure, 10 would be reasonable to get a better idea.

Having to do 30 placement games for all 3 ladders now is excessive

Because a lot of people stop playing once they hit a rank. So they lose a lot of their skill.

Doing placements evaluates their skill and game play.

They're already going to be placed lower than where they were before so if they want to get back up theyd need to get that skill back. I'm just saying 10 placements games is a huge waste of time with very little benefit

Not necessarily, you can get placed higher if you are in bronze/low silver. Which is where the majority of the players are at.

Its only the people gold and and higher that placements affect.

No they already said you CANNOT be placed higher than where you were in your prior season. Basically said sorry to everyone who was in Bronze 5 (not that I'm there) in that doing all their placements even if they went 10-0 wouldnt get higher

If you can link an official red post, go for it. But I have already seen friends finish in bronze 1 or 2 and get placed into silver 5.

It is possible, but only in bronze2 - Silver 4. Because that is right around the filtering median of 1200.

Imagine not climbing out of bronze for a season but instead the rest of your time playing the game. This is basically why. It wouldn't stay competitive and would also discourage players.

To get a bigger sample size to base it on.

You really think that going 6-4 will place you that much better than 4-6 when you're already capped from your prior rank? I'd rather spend those 7 extra games on matches that will actually count and give LP

I feel ya, I went 7 wins, carried most of the games, and got B5. And I had enemies and allies say they where in plat, silver, and gold.

I mean I guess it's okay, I changed the way I play since last week and carry most games now, so I can rise back out of bronze again I suppose. It's just taking so long; I only have time to play a couple of games after work.

Kirius Dark1 votes

Yeah I have at most 2-3 games a night if that. Way too long to get placements done. Even for most people it's ~7h of gameplay just to accomplish nothing

To force you to play the game. The more people playing the more successful the game is.

Pichuru1 votes

So you are telling me that you would rather be placed off of playing just 3 or so games and not 10? In that case lets say you lost all 3 and got put B5 wouldn't you wish that just 3 games didn't weigh so heavily on your mmr.

Kirius Dark1 votes

Your prior mmr has an effect on your placement so unless you were something like B1 then tanked all 3 to get B5 then fine, but that's quite likely where they'd be placed anyways where even if they went 10-0 they'd prob be B3

Actually your placement is based on your MMR at the end of ten placement games. At the start of a new season, they take your old MMR, halve it and then they add 600. That will be your new MMR which decides who you play in your placement games. In many cases, those ten games will barely move your MMR, so your rank is often determined before any placement games are played.

But the games don't make a difference anyway, I went 8-2 and went down to Bronze 4 from Bronze 3 last season. So obviously those placement games mean absolutely nothing

Pichuru1 votes

The only thing I can tell you is if you have a problem with the way they placements are done then don't play ranked no one is forcing you too.

Not this season, but for the last two seasons I had a couple of friends that played the bare minimum number of ranked games to get gold rewards. Season 3 they ended gold 5, season 4 they were placed and ended gold 5, season 5 they were placed and ended gold 4, and season 6 they were placed and ended gold 3. Each season they at least ended up where they stopped in the previous season and had overwhelmingly positive w/l ratios in placements. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

I do the same w a few accounts since the lol ladder system tends to push people down than to encourage them. Win too much? - get grouped with 30% winrate allies Placements? - get tanked then reclimb as "incentive" to play Take a week off at higher elo? - decay away

With the extreme resets every season I don't find much meaning in climbing too high

SC2 ladder model would be much more rewarding where you have fewer placement matches and can climb or fall much faster. None of this whole MMR much be 5 divisions lower before you drop a tier bullshit either

Placement games in general are pointless. I've seen people go 1-9 in placements and get placed in gold. On the other side of the spectrum I've seen people go 8-2 in placements and get placed in bronze. Point being, you are already placed within one or two tiers within a ranking before you even start your placements. So it absolutely is a waste of time. It's to create an illusion that you have some say in where you get placed. When truly those 10 games mean literally nothing.

If someone's mmr was around silver 3. if they went 8-2 they might get placed silver 2 or 1. If they go 2-8 they might get placed silver 4 or silver 5... big fucking whoop. It's a broken system, especially since most people have to go through a bit of a learning curve before they start figuring the game out. I literally make alt accounts often on games like these because first account I'm learning game so my mmr is lower, second account I always place higher and save myself the pain and struggle of trying to climb out of hell. It would be nice if we didn't have to exploit a broken system.

edit: I realize i committed one of my pet peeves here, stated a problem without even attempting a solution. Soooo. How about just making everyone start in bronze 5 and climb up. Cuz lets be honest here. I'm not the only one who does some off the wall stuff in normals... AP varus, AD lulu, Vayne top, etc. stuff I wouldn't do in ranked. That should have no effect on my mmr whatsoever. I think normals is the place you should be able to do stuff like that without fear of tanking your mmr. But as it stands, you almost have to take normals as serious as you do ranked, which doesn't help the already toxic as is environment that mobas can create.
