I think the point players are making is that Morellonomicon is a must-buy for pretty much any mage, and that AP itemization as a whole is too samey. Players don't want to go for the same build each time across multiple champions, and Morello's is the biggest symptom of that due to being rushed on pretty much every mage build. The problem highlighted in the OP is also the reverse: the early Grievous Wounds provided by Morello's is responsible for mitigating a lot of healing in-game overall, which has driven up a lot of healing, especially life steal and support healing, in order to still function in that environment. In the end, the problem is with those heals, which are too strong as a baseline precisely because they're expected to be halved by GW. In turn, this makes healing reduction all the more essential, which makes Morello's even more of a must-rush.
It's also worth noting that Morellonomicon is not itself a very well-designed item, as it gives pretty much everything a mage would want in good amounts, i.e. 100 AP, 20% CDR, Grievous Wounds and mana sustain in combat. As such, it combines a lot of different potential niches into a single, catch-all item, which is also why it attracts so much criticism. AP itemization hasn't really evolved much over time, even during the MYMU (and certainly not during the Assassin Update), and we've remained with the same limited pool of items for all AP champions, whereas AD itemization has broadened and diversified across multiple classes, while also becoming cheaper and more powerful. Equalizing power across mage items to create more competitive first picks, and coming up with more options for different classes would go a long way towards improving that, but as long as Morello's is worth several other mage items in terms of power and bonuses, that's not going to happen easily.
