Gangplank shouldn't be able to add a barrel to a chain while it's going off
It doesn't matter how cool it looks or how 'difficult' it is, it completely breaks down the intended counterplay of his barrels, and you get essentially no warning.

Honestly if anything it is the thing I would most like to see kept. It really is a big part of what separates good and bad GP players, especially those who can toss down a barrel at max range, shoot the one before it then flash place another to catch a fleeing enemy.

Then they need to give his barrels a travel time, because there's actually no way to outplay it and that's not remotely fair for an ability that can easily hit for half your health.
Yep, it's impossible to lane against a GP as melee.
His barrels do have a travel time, that's what makes chaining a 3rd onto them after you hit the 1st possible.

They don't. There's no projectile, they just immediately appear at the target location. You can chain them like that because the explosion has a travel time.
There's no warning when a barrel is suddenly going to appear ontop of you.
If gp has a barrel nearby, there's a good chance he's going to put one on top of you. If you want to learn how to play against him, or any champion really, play them. If you think you can learn good barrel mechanics in "like 2 custom games", you don't know difficult it is to actually pull off a good gp.
I consider myself a decent gp player. Not the best, but I can generally time my parrrley to hit a barrel the instant it hits 1 stack, I can generally pull off some good 2-3 barrel combos and chain barrels at their maximum distance, and place ults to help my team. Playing gp has definitely helped my map awareness a lot. But I was laning against a cait mid earlier who also had gp's barrel timing down, and she successfully last hit almost every one of my barrels during the laning phase because AAs have a faster travel speed than parrrley. Without barrels, gp becomes pretty useless. You can parrrley harrass, but that only does so much.

There's nothing wrong with barrels as an ability, there's a problem with being able to place one in the middle of a barrel chain and have it go off with no warning.
You don't get an opportunity to fight over them, and you don't get an opportunity to get out of the way. It makes it completely impossible to deal with GP as a melee champion who isn't named Darius.
dropping a 3rd barrel mid chain isn't that common or that efficient, especially early during the laning phase. Barrels at the point have a long cd, and not having any barrels leaves gp pretty open. But having an ability that requires that much skill to pull off successfully should have a high reward. It's like any other skillshot, just requires some decently quick fingers. If you see gp drop a 2nd barrel and shoot his 1st while you're not in range of either, you can guess he might be about to drop a 3rd on top of you.
The fact that it's difficult doesn't justify it being borderline impossible to do anything about. The problem is that he can put it on top of you, so you can't actually juke out of the way since he'll put a barrel in range of you right as it goes off. It's not "like any other skillshot", because most skillshots can be dodged. It lets you use an ability that's balanced around having a fair amount of warning and counterplay as a nearly instant ground-targeted AOE.
GP's barrels do way too much damage for guaranteed hits to be fair.
and plenty others can deal a truckload of damage with much easier to hit abilities.
GP's barrels are a zoning tool, don't stand near one and he can't really chain one on top of you. They're far from guaranteed hits.
you get no warning on a lot of things that do more damage and has a lower risk/skillcap

Zed gives you a ton of warning, idk what you're going on about.

the big X on your character means you already died without
.
basically if there's a barrel down, GP can nuke you at any moment from 1k range
So why are you ignoring the fact that despite the difficult mechanic on his barrels, it also takes about 1 hit to kill a barrel at late game?
I swear people like you complain just about anything, especially if it's one where you got rekt by one last game.
Nah. It's called learning to play a difficult combo.
