The problem with rylais (and maybe frozen mallet too)

Lets start with the fact that barely anyone builds item 3116 for the slow. Most users are only buying it because it amplifies the damage on item 3151.

So why dont people buy it for the slow? simply because riot gutted it, and it was well deserved.

A slow that can be constantly applied with any ability without a cooldown is extremely hard to balance ( Hi, item 3022 ).

Having this item be weak messes up mages that have 0 cc in their kit, but having it be strong causes everyone to build it.

I think putting a cool down on item 3116, (much like the one on item 3303 ) and increasing the slow would allow rylies to be meaningfull for mages that really need it, without breaking it for champs that can abuse it.

It could potentially be allowed to be stat efficient too.

Riot didn't nerf Rylai's for the slow they nerfed it because literally every AP champion was buying it instead of it's core users making every AP champion and mage feel extremely generic without distinction between different sub-classes like burst and sustained mages.

Instead of nerfing it as a stat-stick Riot just nerfed every single thing on the item instead. The worst thing that Rylai's could get is better stats instead of improving it's passive because that would just make it a more generic must buy item on any champion again.

That kinda happens now with Liadries.

I can’t say that I have seen anyone buy Rylais Liandry combo that would want the Rylais anyways. I guess you could argue Brand somewhat but that fact that his passive continues to slow people makes it really good beyond Liadries.

I personally love Rylai's still but I realize it's not particularly amazing.

I build it with a build that already has Glacial Augment+GLP, and Iceborn Gauntlet, so I have literally no delay in my slows and that's fuckin' awesome imo.

Played against a Yi with Frozen Mallet last night, it was the most bullshit experience I've had all month.

Frozen Mallet is a nasty item to deal with because it gives you the beef to keep pursuing the other guy and keeps him from getting away. A part of me wonders if both of the slow items would have been better from the get-go if they didn't have HP attached to them.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea, but I think the problem is that it is intended as a juggernaut item. It has to give health to be useful to them, but all the abusers are marksmen and slayers.

I think that the item contradicts itself, it is supposed to let juggernauts and bruisers stick to their target but they can't get to their target to apply it anyways if they get kited to hell and back.

  • Maybe the item needs to be replaced with something that has an active that gives an aoe slow around you, rather than requiring you to get in range of the target.

  • Maybe Frozen Mallet could apply negative attack speed to the user (maybe just against the user's bonus attack speed rather than their base). That would be fair, given juggernauts don't rely on attack speed anyways and it would punish the people who shouldn't be using it for trying to abuse it.

  • Or Riot could start making class specific item restrictions.

Honestly it's not even worth it for Morde.

That's accurate but the motivation on why he "would" pick it up is still the slow

Actually I buy it to amplify liandry's damage :p But yes, most Mordes' pick it up for the slow.

Normally, I'd be all over discussion on this topic.

But next week, it's just flat getting a 10AP buff. I'd rather see where that lands before talking about it too much more.
