i think most of the reason why garen dropped off after season 8 was the overall meta change.
the game practically sucked him off during the vs. event with teamcomps mostly being filled with lethality assassins and low cc champions.
jungle it was mostly khazix at the time, mid it was zed (maybe talon? not sure anymore), and it was also around pykes release before people started running aftershock on him, and built him mostly assassin.
so often it was 3 assassins on a team, a type of champion who has a hard time dealing with garen, since you cant just burst him out.
That, and while I certainly have nothing against going
on Garen, his usual bread-and-butter item
just doesn't cut it anymore. Tri Garen works best when the enemy team doesn't have an actual-factual Tank in their lineup. Like if you're facing a squishier top-lane opponent, like most Skirmishers or even some of the Ranged Top-laners or Mages you see up there. The Sheen proc (Which I STILL THINK needs to be changed back, or at least changed to if it never was, to Base AD alongside
) works wonders on bursting them down. But, that's NOT what a Juggernaut, at least according to the design of their overall class of Fighters, is supposed to DO! Juggers are supposed to be DPS based, not Burst.
Meanwhile, going
is almost like a joke. Even when I don't play Garen, the ones I see don't use it. Heck, ADCs like
and
seem to get more out of it these days than Juggernauts do, and it's a Juggernaut-intended item! Only when there is an actual-factual Tank on the enemy team, that is going to build Armor, will I get
nowadays. That, IMO, is NOT a good omen for Garen, or even Juggernauts in general.
