What if we removed runes and made more masteries while making it more complex?

^title. What are your opinions? Masteries still put a level cap and require to get level 30 in order to fully unlock it while not having the restriction of 1000s of hour of playing in order to get decent runes.

More complexity isn't always better.

In design, the term "less is more" is quite powerful: and masteries fall in the realm of game design.

Runes existing allows IP to have consistent value for old players and new players alike. Removing runes completely would devalue IP, and likely cause Riot to loose money on champion sales, so there's not a huge incentive for them there. Less money for Riot also means less quality for us.

Also - it doesn't take 1000s of hours to get decent runes, not even 100 if you ignore 1st win of the day bonuses. Most of the runes you should be purchasing are in the cheapest price tiers, you only really need 2 pages (AD and AP) With the 1st win of the day bonus you'll cut down the number of games needed fairly significantly.

It's only about 17k IP for two basic pages (AD and AP).

I saved up more than that between levels 15 and 20.

The runes allow for more complex building already. The problem lies in the balance; currently, the runes have a few really good sets per type, and then everything else is trash.

With Marks, it's generally offensive stats like AS, AD, AP, ArPen, MPen and Crit that are worth having. On Seals, Armor is most common, and then some also use HP or HP/lvl, haven't known any others to be very efficient. The Glyphs are pretty much always MR, Mana or CDR, either flat or per-level depending on the user's preference. Quintessences are much closer to balanced, there are few sets of them that are not worth using ever.

Still waiting for them to overhaul the balance in the rune system...
