The backbone of any Champion

Malicious Metal··59 votes·1,809 views

(I’d like to apologize in advance for the quality and language of this post, it being 5 in the morning and the first thing I saw being the title changes makes me want to punch a wall so bear with me)

Champion design 101 Behind every of the 120+ champion lies a core theme, their character, their heart and soul. This is the fundament on which all their skills and moves are based, their lore is written and they’re brought to life by. It’s the essence of the champion, if you hear Darius you instantly think of a grim noxian general that dunks people and who’s unbelievable loyal to Noxus.

Now think about Morde. Metal? Undeath? Dragons? Spooky Skeletons? Pain? Suffering?

What was the underlying problem with the rework strikes again with the title changes; A complete lack of understanding and cohesive vision for the Murder Emperor.

Hecarim: An undead Centaur spectre that leads the charge and tramples everything underfoot ->The Shadow of War, heralding the approach of the undead armies

Karthus: A man who sees death as nothing terrible but another beginning, a better life. ->The Deathsinger, speaking of the countless benefits of Death and how enlightening it is.

See, this is what Mordekaiser lacked. His Title only being there for show but deeply anchored in the huearts of the League community. And Instead of giving him an identity fit for a true King of Death they went the lazy route and completely scrapped what made him unique.

**“Lord of Death”…. ** First of all Death wasn’t his element to begin with, he was always seen as conquest , pain, metal and general badassery What we got was something an edgy teen would come up with. How does this new title fit him? He’s still got his iron man passive, his mace of spades and generally plays more like a real dark warrior than an deadMcDead king of Death.

I saw this coming ever since they took away his metal effects but for the love of god icebox the poor guy before you can do any more harm to both his identity and those foolish enough to still cling to what once was the Master of Metal.

And if you really want to change his title, which you certainly will, try and go with something more endearing, something grand, something with a nice ring to it and something that differentiates him from the likes of Karthus.

-Corrupter of Souls (Metal reference for Redeemer of Souls) -Paladin of Pain (His whole pain theme) -The Master of Murder -Aspect of Anguish

Anything else than Lord of Death really since it’s really bland and unimaginative and certainly just seems like a huge middle finger to the last few Morde mains out there.

Homogenizing is Bad Yes, the factions need to have a core theme to them but making them all cardboard cutouts with a different paintjob is not the way to go. Not all Piltover champions have bizarre hextech constructs, not all Zaun champs are freaks.

Not all Shadow Isle champions should be affiliated with death alone. Every one has their own spin on the matter, Thresh being torment, Hecarim War, Karthus acfeptance. Morde shouldn’t be the Lord of Death since it instantly puts him above all without any context, hell he’s even higher up the foodchain than kindred with this title so please pin down a real core theme for him.

This title change feels halfassed just like the rework and both spawned from the same problem: A LACK OF CORE THEME FOR MORDEKAISER.

What perfect news to start off one’s day //sigh//

I see you all in the evening, until then; Metal shall prevail!

I always enjoy reading Malicious Metal's Mordekaiser threads. Not mindless complaining and I get some insight to a champion I didn't have much interest in.

Truly a fan of his champion. I salute you good sir!

But since you can't see my salute I'll give you an upvote instead.

When CT moves on to butchering Urgot (lel) you'll probably see me a lot too. Some people just feel very passionate about their mains.

I know. I like seeing that rather than "I play champion X cause OP"

HE'S REWORKING URGOT?

Westonbirt1 votes

It's on their backburner, alongside Poppy, Yorick and all the other weird kits.

But they prefer to rework champions who are already doing good so what the heck.

HeadHonchkrow1 votes

Where does it say so(for purely research purposes) ?

Westonbirt1 votes

Urgot rework (source:Meddler@ff20) : http://www.surrenderat20.net/2015/02/red-post-collection-meddler-on-urgot.html

Yorick rework (source:Xelnath@wiki) : http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Emptylord/Xelnath%27s_Yorick_discussion

The thing is, lots of things are floated around, some even make it onto the PBE. A number of champions are obviously not healthy, but nailing it is like designing a brand new champion.

Oh. Thank you for going out of your way to find all this for me.

What about Knight of Broken Souls?

Since his ultimate is all about breaking the will of others through death and then enslaving them.

Malicious Metal10 votes

Also a splendid alternative.

Teridax687 votes

What about The Subjugator as another potential alternative? Even when going by his current short lore of being a hate-filled evil spirit, and even his current kit, it could fit his overall theme of crushing everything in his path and bending his foes to his will to dominate the battlefield.

Westonbirt5 votes

Mordekaiser : The Iron Subjugator

It has a nice ring to it.

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

That's actually pretty good. I kind of want to see the word, "Ironclad" in his title somewhere (mainly because I like that word).

Something something Ironclad...

JediSenpaiNP2 votes

The Ironclad Enthraller, mayhaps?

I personally like the idea of The Exanimate Torment. it would keep the feeling of undead, but provide the idea that he is pain itself, that he is both in pain, but the cause of it as well.

Westonbirt1 votes

Exanimate sounds a bit busy.

Westonbirt1 votes

IRONCLAD SUBJUGATOR !

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

Ironclad Tyrant? I like the word tyrant too, but I don't think it really matches Mordekaiser.

The Sultan of Suffering

The Baron of Battering

The Tyrant of Torture

The Annihilator

The Incarnation of Pain

"The Tyrant of Torment" sounds slightly better to me.

The Bearded Bard1 votes

Personally I like the incarnation of pain, but tyrant of torment is pretty sweet as well

XIII Vanitas1 votes

I don't like "Incarnation of Pain" because it sounds like he has a body, while Morde is just an eternally agonizing spirit that haunts a suit of armor in order to deliver the same pain to the livings.

Kitten of Evil5 votes

Oh, I thought his lore was something about being like an avatar of pestilence who lived in Zaun, someone who diseased everything he came in touch with, and had to be kept in a metal suit both to protect himself from the outside and to protect the outside from him.

EDIT: Just checked and it looks like he, like Sivir, is another victim of total origin story retcon.

respect for you Malicious Metal. Lots of posts with well thought points, no QQing, and sticking with your main through all the trials rito puts you through. +1

It really just sucks because even though I've almost never played Morde, it feels like it could easily happen to one of my favorite champions. Who's next on the chopping block? Swain? Singed? Nautilus?

I play games to have fun, not to live in fear of the developer fucking me over without warning.

Kaeblen3 votes

oh, please not Singed.

Baron of Bread1 votes

I doubt Singed will get chopped. He was (or was one of) the first champion(s) designed and Riot does seem to like him.

Blitzidious2 votes

Not Swain either, like, I don't even play this game anymore due to everything that's been going on(File Shredded it), so I really shouldn't care what happens to the Champions, but, I still do, because, goddammit, I love them. Singed, Pantheon, Swain, Twisted Fate as well. There would be more than many bitchy rants by me(Finely constructed, Bitchy rants) if any gutting happened to them, or ugh, if CertainlyT got his hands on them. I would probably respect him as a human being, but I don't know him, so at the moment there is very little respect for him. I dislike him as a Designer.

PlsTouchMeGently2 votes

And Rito will ignore this, just like all the other recent threads about Morde.

Pikmints2 votes

The only way I could see Morde's new title as befitting would be if he were the head honcho of the Shadow Isles. As of now, there's no real hierarchy in the Shadow Isles, so there's little to no conditions in the current lore for this to seems like an appropriate title.

If the new lore of the Shadow Isles has something where Morde is the ruler of the land since the event surrounding the Ruined King, or perhaps he would be the primary reason for the event, then him being associated simply with death where all of his "subordinates" are a specific theme related to death would seem to make the title fitting. That being said I don't see any reason for Riot, if they do plan on having something like this happen, to change his name now rather than alongside the reason itself.

charcharmunro2 votes

Singed I feel even Riot wouldn't let him be messed with too bad, considering he was one of, if not the first champion ever made for the game of the original 40. And also he's a champion that doesn't NEED a rework. Though he does need new lore at some point. As it is, his non-retconned lore is... Told in Riven and Yi's lores.

But as for Mordekaiser, Paladin of Pain sounds pretty sweet. I do agree Master of Metal only really worked in regards to his ability names and joke but... Did it ever work for his lore? I don't know how many iterations he's gone through, lore-wise. And if it didn't, the title was technically sort of a throwaway placeholder that just stuck because fans liked it. But "Lord of Death" doesn't... Feel like it has anything to do with him. He's never really talking about death or undeath compared to, say, Karthus or Kindred, he's just this... Presence. Paladin of Pain just feels... Right.

MAN OF INTELLECT2 votes

I proposed even "the Armored Devil" (reference to "Armored Saint", an American heavy metal band) as his new title. Hell, anything is better than "Lord of Death" at this point.

Btw, I really like Corrupter of Souls and Paladin of Pain.
