If people don't like the match making in normals

Why do you play them? Now maybe I'm in the minority here, but the games I want a significant challenge and to be matched evenly against opponents of similar skill I play ranked (which is what I mostly play). 90% of the time I play normals it's with someone who invited me and I'm probably going to play a champ I want to try and improve on. I don't expect it to be balanced, bc 10% of the time I'm gonna play stuff I play in ranked bc I'm just in that mood but someone I wanted to duo w/ didn't want to play ranked or was too far from my rank to duo w/ there. If everyone else is doing that same thing I expect that 1 in ten people should be way way harder to play against than the normally are in that que, and match making has no way of knowing what game someone is gonna play like they do in ranked and so it can't adjust for that jump in skill when it puts me against someone who is about to crush me. It happens, but as long as it's random and not always for or against me I don't mind bc I don't see any other options, and if I want it to be more balanced I just play ranked.

Can someone explain to me how match making could be more balanced in normals and still be normals instead of ranked, or maybe why you play normals if you don't like the variance in difficulty/team matching? I think if I hated it I'd just play ranked (which I did for a long time), but I'm sure there are good reasons for doing it even if it frustrates you that I'm just not seeing.
