No clue why.... makes zero sense.

It adds your Death Timer to it so you have the full effect as soon as you respawn, it was changed awhile ago.

Oh really, ok then that's good if it's how it works. Are you 100% sure about it? I think they would make it more intuitive by not showing time elapse on it in that case.

They made a clear statement about how the elixirs work in the patch and indicated that they agree with you about how this method is unintuitive. However, implementing it in this fashion was also easy and otherwise bug-free so they went ahead with it and have put "find a more intuitive way to do the same thing," on a low priority feature wish list.

The technical term would be "Fixed Time of Use". Elixirs only start when you're dead because your purchase into a full inventory automatically uses it. Simply time the purchase with your respawn. They give you two timers to keep track of grey screen.

Why though? It just seems like a stupid gotcha which takes away from focusing on the actual game. You've already made the decision to get an Elixir and now you have to sit there in inventory till 1 second before you spawn rather than watching the game and thinking about the next steps. Just dumb.

If your inventory isn't full, the item won't use itself when you buy it. If your inventory is full, it will. This isn't hard to work around. I still get to look around. When the grey fades and I'm alive again, I buy the elixir as I start running and go about my business.

However, if there is space in your inventory, it will sit there until you actually use it like any other potion.

why not wait til you re spawn to buy it ?

is that fraction of a second that important?

The way the elixir timers actually work means it doesn't matter when you buy it if you're dead at the time. The OP didn't realize that your death timer is added to the duration of the elixir so it's a zero-sum issue.
