We are straying away from what the support role should be.

Honestly, I don't think there should be supports that have no true defense in their kit. Before you say I just want Sups to be heal bots, hear me out. I have no problem with supports that can do a little bit of both like Thresh or Leona, but when champions like Illaoi are being played support... Enough said...

Supports like Zyra and Brand too, honestly should just be played in the carry role instead of the support one. Sups being purely damage is one of the main reasons damage is so high as well as why marksmen are so weak.

Mid and Bot are carry roles, they are picked to deal damage. Top and JG are half and half, they are picked to defend sometimes and damage sometimes. We need at least one role where the primary focus is defense and support should be that role. We should not try to bypass that and put champions in the support role that can deal carry level damage on 2/3rds of the income. (Those Pyke kind of champs shouldn't even exist but that's a whole different thread.)

Sure, a lot of these mage supports do have CC in their kit, which could be thought of as defense; but if it's not a spell that they're holding onto waiting to react to an opponent's ability, then there's nothing defensive about it. Karma is a great example of a good mage support.. She does damage but has innate defense in her kit. Zyra is a bad example, all of her defense is tied to offense and is used to kill people 90% of the time.

A lot of marksmen were literally designed to only function with good peel. Their support is not obligated to always be that guy, but it would certainly be a good fallback option when everyone else on the team picks an assassin. Autofill players should still just pick whatever works, but a Brand or Zyra support main should just be queing APC.

TLDR; It would just improve the game and make damage a lot more bearable if carries stuck to the carry role, carry supports included, and defensive champions became the primary supports.

The Problem is someone like brand has too much power in his kit to begin with even without gold, he just does stupid amounts of damage. and zyra does gain more from gold but passive gold gen as a support is too high just from even hitting people with spells.

and i got nothing to say about pyke,

except he should be deleted from the game or reworked into another lane, hes too much of a problematic champion from his healing to his ulti.

As someone who loves the way mages play......

If you want mages mid then assassins will need to be nerfed back to when they had to wait for an opponent to be half health before they could all in them safely. Oh and actually require skill to play xP

It's not really a question of "roles". The "problem" is that Riot thinks the game (as originally conceived) is too slow and boring (to watch). The original 5 META roles: Top, Jg, Mid, Bot & Sup; was based on the theory that 3 players could heavy gold farm (Top, Mid, Bot) 1 player could "mediocre" farm, and provide roaming kill pressure (jungle), and the last player would always be behind on goal so should provide UTILITY (support).

That's a balanced and "healthy" setup for a STRATEGY focused game. The two problems were #1. Too many players don't want to focus on flexible utility instead of splashy "kill count", and #2. The game builds slowly when it's focused around damage from items/gold. Riot has been HARD focused on addressing #2 in the last year or two, and once they made it real easy to get kill pressure and damage output super fast, all the people that didn't like playing utility to begin with, stopped bothering. The solutions are either to make Utility uber-effective so it beats out damage (Soraka/Sona/Janna/Nami OP!) or cut down on damage so the game slows down and gives utility more room to be useful ("but... muh LC$BIGPLAYS").

Technically- Brand, Zyra, and Karma are not supports. Brand is a mid lane mage but Riot won't tune his ratios so that he would go back mid.

Riot pushed Zyra and Karma into the support lane much to their fans protests. They were mid lane mages first and still should be.

Just so you know if you didn't already ;)

Your suggestions can never work for everyone because then we'll again get a "nobody wants to play support era". People need to accept that supports alone can win the game, just like any other role can. The role's name is not "b-tch". Not saying adjustments don't have to be made, but support picks can be countered by other support and ADC picks. If you don't do that, well, why are you complaining? It's like picking Draven into Braum and talking how shit the game is when you get fucked.

Carry supports is a result of damage being high. Healing and shielding supports are more effective the longer a fight can last and damage "supports" are more effective at removing an enemy from the fight with high damage. Also, Sona is currently the highest win rate champion in the game.

To be fair, for a while supports just weren't fun. Yes the supporting role should be devoted to playing defense, but then we get right back to how things were back in the dark ages of supports. Where supports were just the lame, boring, thankless unsung hero of the lane while the glory hogging ADC gobbles up all the credit.

Yes champions like Pyke simply shouldn't exist, but that being said, you feel like you're impactful. He's a fun champion because you aren't an unsung hero. You're a carrying support and your team and the enemy team will know who carrying (or throwing) the hardest.

Even if it's unpractical, most people would much rather go 5/2/2 then go 1/6/40, even if it's obvious that the latter is doing far better.

Even with defensive champions like Alistar Braum Thresh Leona you have to rely on your ADC to follow up to apply the damage. And if said ADC only wants to farm and tells you to stop engaging because they don't want to fight, you just sit back and sigh.

With champions like Zyra Xerath Brand Zilean, you are the damage. You don't need to rely on your ADC to pay attention. You do the damage, you get the kills etc.

When Janna and Soraka started maxing w and e respectively we should have realized that Riot has fucked up the support role pretty hard.

The enchanter nerfs did this to bot lane. Now mage supports have no counter.
