QoL Improvement: Add Champion Name behind Player Name in Chat

Dr Poro··95 votes·3,757 views

A lot of announcements in chat don't include the champion name of the player they're talking about

_Dr Poro has drawn first blood. Dr Poro is on a killing spree. Dr Poro has ended Poro Villain's killing spree. Dr Poro slain Poro Villain for a double kill. _

This means that if you missed out on the initial announcement, you have to look up on your scoreboard which champion that player is actually playing.

How it should be:

_Dr Poro (Braum) has drawn first blood. Dr Poro (Braum) is on a killing spree. Dr Poro (Braum) has ended Poro Villain's (Blitzcrank) killing spree. Dr Poro (Braum) slain Poro Villain (Blitzcrank) for a double kill! _

There are other announcement lines where the champion name is already added. Dr Poro (Braum) has slain Dragon. Dr Poro (Braum) purchased Sight Ward.

The worst thing is that it has been like this since season 2, probably even season 1 (didn't play back then). All they did is changing some exclamation marks to full stops.

There should be more threads like these, pointing out the obvious shortages in the quality of life. People get bugged by it every day, but no one seems to report them. Also the chat in client needs some improvements. For example if you enter champion select while in a party, the party chat shouldn't close automatically. Too often have I missed a comment of my friends because they posted it less than a second before a match was found, and I'm just the same happened too often in the other direction aswell.

Yes, and the new HUD makes it so that summoner names are hidden under mouseovers in the scoreboard so even if you wanted to look up what champ that person is playing you have to mouseover all the portraits until you randomly find the summoner name that showed in chat.

Dr Poro3 votes

Exactly. That's the reason why I started this discussion. It used to be annoying, but now it's way worse. Having to hover over the portrait to see their name wouldn't bother me if the champ name was included in the chat announcements.

Riot has better things to do. They need to rework all champions frequently so that people who main certain champs can't get used to them. Zed must become an APC, Lux a melee tank and Shyvana a support.

Dr Poro8 votes

Please, stay on topic. Rage about reworks elsewhere.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

1: That makes literally no sense. Why the hell would Zed's main weakness (being AD) be changed? Why would Lux every become melee or a tank? Why would Shyvana be a mainly support champion? Reworks are to make a champion more like what they were meant to be. Except the Mordekaiser rework, but that is being made by CertainlyT, so I don't expect much out of it.

2: There is a team who works on reworks, and a completely different team who works on this sort of thing. The team who does reworks is not in any way held back by a completely different team adding about 8 letters to the chat when somebody gets a kill streak or is shut down. That is how video game companies work.

Being AD is a weakness?

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

It is if you're a mid laner. It definitely limits your choice on ADCs (Corki and Kog are some of the only choices) and top laners (Rumble and Kennen and many other AP top laners).

QOL and Clarity has been slowly degrading in chat/announcements for a while. First they removed player names from all announcements. Now they force you to hover over the champions in the Tab menu to see who it is...

Dr Poro3 votes

Tbh, I couldn't really care less about the player names. I just want to know what champion they're talking about. :)

Who the fuck actually cares about who individuals' account names are.

Unless you're in Diamond+ and see the same people every game, there's literally no reason to hold people accountable by name.

Doomchem2 votes

Pretty much every game outside of this one.

But other games often have other functions that League does not have, while at the same time having elements that others lack.

For example, in many first person shooters, there's literally no identifying information between players as everyone is clones of each other (to a certain extent, depends on the game). If you need to identify someone, you can easily do so by name, in game. People's names often highlighted in their teams' colors, or their names being on the current round's leaderboards.

League has the exact opposite elements however. Everyone must be different champions (at least on the same team in regards to Blind pick) so, especially if it's a matter of finding someone on a particular team, it's exceedingly easy to identify an individual without their account's username (think of how many players address other players by calling them the champion they are playing at the time. That.).

Like hell, I know most FPS I play give me the ability to add people while in the middle of a round, so of course names would be pretty important there, but everything in League must be done within the client, after the game ends and everybody's account name is lined up with their champions anyway. The only other possible functionality I would ever need to look for somebody's account is to mute them, and thanks to the spiel about how League of Legends makes it easy to identify people without their account names, you don't even need their account names to mute them.

Ergo, who the fuck actually cares about who individuals' account names are. Don't pull bullshit about other games, we are talking about League of Legends.

EDIT: I just realized something that might not appear obvious from my first post.

I agree with the OP. Consistency needs to be remade. However, I greatly disagree with RottedApples because who the fuck cares if Pussyslayer5000x has slain the dragon; the primary information you are looking for is what champion it is so you can respond to that champion.

At first I thought you were talking about reversing the order so it'd be (Alistar) Theorchero.

I was initially pissed, then I re read what you said and I approve. Take my begrudging upvote.

Dr Poro2 votes

Thanks. I reworded a little to make it more clear what I mean. People should not have to read it twice to understand it. My bad.

This should appeal to riot since it provides "clarity" although good suggestions like this typically don't get added until half a decade later. See you in 5 years.

SnazzyTheMister2 votes

with the change to not having player names clearly displayed on the scoreboard (you have to mouse over the person to see their player name) always having the champion name on anything said champion does in the chat would be a good move for the sake of clarity

Dr Poro1 votes

Exactly. Very well said.

DrCyanide1 votes

Make sure to add it to who started the Surrender vote as well!

Dr Poro1 votes

If the player name is mentioned, it only makes sense to add the champion name aswell. Personally, I don't need to know who started a surrender vote, but since it is currently told, it should be included. EVERYWHERE a player name is mentioned, the champion name should be aswell (or the icon of the champion in case of the initial announcements).

Im Andru2 votes

Can we actually just remove names from the surrender vote? I don't want to start a vote, only to get raged at by the 0/30 duo that "we still have a chance."

Dr Poro1 votes

Sometimes I like to see who votes yes and who votes no. However, I think it ultimately leads to more toxicity than anything else. They hid who is premade and who's not to prevent disputes about it. It only makes sense to do the same for surrender votes. However, that's a whole other discussion.

Wajster1 votes

What if you have names turned off so you specifically don't see champion names? This would completely defeat the purpose of that feature. Bad idea.

Dr Poro1 votes

Actually, I have names turned off (not seeing the player name above the champion). I have no idea why this idea would ruin that future. Note that I'm talking about adding the name of the CHAMPION (Annie, Gragas, etc.) in chat announcements. Turning off the names above the champion doesn't have anything to do with what appears in the chat.

I suggest reading the thread again because I assume you have misunderstood it. If not, or if it's not clear enough, let me know.

Wajster2 votes

Oh gotcha. Yeah good idea then xD

Reworded my original post because the picture kept giving errors.
