Stop telling me Bard is a no-skill champion

Ben Sharpio··7 votes·1,699 views

You IDIOTS think Bard is a no skill champion? I have been taking him top lane for so long now and i have had my good games and bad games. Most of my games have been great. But for you idiots to sit there and tell me Bard takes no skill is just absolute bullshit. You wouldn't be able to get HALF of the kills i get with only two damaging moves. In fact, THAT'S YOUR ARGUMENT TO WHY HE'S A "NO-SKILL CHAMP" - the fact that he only has his q and basic attacks. We don't win? Well lets blame Bard for our loss even though i have the highest kill participation if not then the runner up in the most kills on my team.

I'm literally sick of you people discouraging me for using a champion i have 30k mastery points in. Once again, none of you would have thought of the strategies i have come up with to get my kills which is the primary reason why a lot of the posts on these boards that are related to bard are how garbage he is and how he needs buffs. I want to see how well you guys do with a "support champion" in the top lane. The last game i played with bard i was the runner up in kills and assists. We lost the game and the morgana on my team literally said "Don't play Bard top". Wtf?!

Look at all of my games with Bard. There has been nothing but improvement. Soon i will move to ranked games where i expect to get abused even FUCKING MORE!!! But you guys can keep relying on meta champions to win your games.

how is you having 30k mastery points relevant in any way to your argument?

Ben Sharpio2 votes

Because 99.9% of the people who say he's garbage have probably only played 1 game with him if not ANY AT ALL, but they continue to berate someone who actually has a great amount of experience with the champion itself. This is annoying because literally every game i go on, even though the mastery banner is clearly on my champion splash art in the loading screen, people still question my strategy in-lane and make dumbass remarks like oh "you died once? Looks like Bard top lane is garbage and you are garbage too". My point is that the mastery points should mean something to people. It should mean that the player has a lot of experience with the champion and people should learn to trust the person for the fact that they use the champion a lot and stop questioning every decision they make when they don't know SHIT about the champion themselves.

I mean seriously. You can't just pull 30k mastery points out of your ass.

mastery means jack shit, there are people who literally farm masteries so that they have a border whenever they play pretty much any champion. you run completely troll builds anyway, gunblade, trinity and shiv on bard? are you serious? that's why people flame you - you run absolute shite builds and play a champion out of the lane that basically 99.9% of people play him in and then expect people to not say anything.

Ben Sharpio2 votes

Completely troll builds? At this point you're just being a troll yourself. You haven't even justified how they are "shite" builds. Based on all of my games they are pretty much showing how my builds are effective. So since you know so much, explain how my builds are troll. Especially for the fact that i have to repeat again: I am generally always within the top two players on my team. What fucking planet were you from when you wrote your comment? And you mean to tell me that people farm masteries for a small red icon above their champion splash art? COMPLETE bs.

colesy3 votes

I would explain why they were shit, but I'm honestly curious on your actual reasoning for building a shiv on bard. like I can't even think of a reason for doing that.

and you're top two on your team because you're:

  1. playing normals that nobody takes seriously
  2. tryharding in the said normals that nobody takes seriously
  3. playing with low elo or unranked shitters who are devoid of any skill

and yeah, people farm masteries. I can't comprehend how people can play thousands of normals yet there are still people who have done that.

Ben Sharpio2 votes

I'm done talking to you. All you did in that response was disrespect people who play normals and did no justification at all in regards to my builds.

Ok, so reading up on your followup, I'm going to assume you are not a troll and that your build involves gunblade->static-> Triforce. The build. I see what you are doing. The meeps give you a 30% ap ratio every 10 seconds, with your Q adding an additional 60%, thus gunblades ap portion isn't totally wasted. My only beef is the spellvamp, which your kit doesnt get full effect from. Static adds to the 10 second wait, 1 second poke style of play, and gives waveclear. Triforce is an obvious pickup for chases and such. Overall, not horrible but I still feel like you are over-reliant on chimes to give you scaling. Theoretically, AD annie would be a better pick. Less sustain, but more burst, more reliable stun, more range, more waveclear and more defensive Options. Also, I'd advise against gunblade. I feel you could squeeze more power without attempting to be hybrid.

As a pick, Here is where I'm going to be a little harsh but bear with me. Top lane is the island. It has some of the most "throw keyboard out window" lane matchups and those matchups can squeeze more fun out of the first 12 or so minutes than in any other lane. From classics like Renekton, Riven, and Darius, to unconventional "fuck yous" like Ap nunu, Quinn, and Akali. And with those picks in mind, I'm stumped as to why I would want Bard top. Top ganks have to be well timed because they pretty much give up dragon if they aren't and some of the above named champions can turn ganks around(Renekton aka double kill at 6:00" is famous for these attributes). If theres going to be any top lane ganks, the enemy jungler feels a lot better ganking the squishy bard than a Riven or Chogath. Furthermore, how do you collect enough chimes to scale with your passive? And what about level 6? Top laners often have a massive level 6 spike in which they typically with 1st back can dive outer turrets. While I understand theres a lot of Q shenanigans to be had with that, level 2, 3 and 6 spikes play a large role in top lane Meta. I assume you want to play the roaming pick-styke comps seen by the Lee-Sin-Thresh comps. And in that role, I see a lot of potential for Bard, especially within the small rooms of the jungle where chimes are often around every bush. However, I also understand that teamfights are inevitable and that leaving even a 0/2 tank to farm top lane is a bad idea. On top of that, we return to the lack of defensive options. Your E defensively is questionable for someone who wants to put down consistent damage. Your R is high risk-high reward and again stops your dps. You mentioned you always contribute well on the damage charts, but it doesn't sound like you win as often. Contribution charts are not all to the game, much in the same way kills arent always the indicator of performance. I've learned that a fed pantheon loses games, as every kill past a certain point is putting his teams gold distribution to a wasted slot. If its 18-14 with a 10/2 Pantheon, and he gets killed, his team gets aced. In some ways, the bard top is an even worse version of that because you can't immediatly access your scaling which is stuffed behind the chime minigame and your low range means that an initiator like Vi or Amumu are going to have a very easy time locking you down. Food for thought. Cheers.

Why is it a bad thing to rely on his meeps? By the end of the game i usually have 80+ meeps and there are usually 3-4 meeps following me at all times. As you collect more and more, the cone at which the meeps spread their damage on-hit increases drastically. Which is a significant contribution to fights. Also, when you get around 65+ charms, you get different buffs like meeps reappearing 1-2 seconds earlier than they originally do. So this means i always have very powerful meeps following me at all times. In my masteries i have a really offensive set-up. I use Arcane blade so that my basic attacks deal bonus magic damage equal to 4% of my ability power, which is a positive because i don't necessarily need to build attack damage on him to be effective with basic attacks, and i also use executioner to give Bard bonus additional damage to champions below 50% health. The gunblade, frostqueen claim and statik shiv are all apart of the reason that i get my kills. There are plenty of times where i can literally instakill the adc and deal a significant amount of damage in teamfights because the statik shiv has the ability to expend its charges dealing 100 additional magic damage (plus the attack speed it gives you so that you can use meeps faster), the frost queen claim does a small burst of damage (50 +5 per champion) plus its 15 additional magic damage to basic attacks and the gunblade is what confirms the kills because it does 150 + 40% of ability power which i get from the frost queen claim, the gunblade itself, rod of ages and sometimes rabadons deathcap. Those items have extra stats that only benefit bard. As for the ganking part, the ganks are not hard to execute at all. When people see Bard top lane they immediately play aggressively just for the fact that i am pretty squishy. So i am generally pushed against my turret. My jungler can effectively gank at this time. If they for some reason get away from both of us, i can either ult the person we're ganking before they reach their turret (therefore my abilities along with my ganker's abilities will be recharged and ready to use faster) or i can go as far as to ult their turret so that it cannot shoot at us and we can successfully "dive" without taking damage. If you look at all of my games with Bard, there are so many opportunities where i could have won. A lot of people just aren't able to pull their own weight on the team which is 100% understandable. You can't just look at my score because its the team that counts. There have been a lot of disconnects (the last game i played and plenty of others), there have been trolls.

Recent:

Look at teemo: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1906244012/49006880?tab=overview Look at mid-lane sona: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1900708508/49006880?tab=overview I cant find the game but our Nautilus had a full inventory of Doran's shields

And a fuckton (literally an understatement) of people don't know what bard does or who he is. They don't know how to play with him. They continuously walk over health packs before teamfights at full HP, when i leave 3 healthpacks at camps for my jungler they walk over them when they have been hit once, if i'm going to collect my charms, people continously ask me what i'm doing or why i'm wandering the jungle and they spam ping my turret.

Another thing you should take into consideration is that fact that my team can be winning the first 35 minutes of the game, but then we may lose 1 or 2 teamfights and get 60 second respawn timers and then lose the game as easy as that. It happens ALL of the time, even in LCS (Fnatic vs SKT T1) for example.

I'd like to see this personally because I feel I'm missing something obvious. I've read over his kit and given him a fair shake whenever I get the chance. I just feel that realistically, too much time is wasted on meep collection if you want 65+. The reason I don't like the meep minigame is because it locks a huge portion of Bards power behind a timer. Getting 2 kills won't help you get more meeps. Thats why it upsets me. If you get it 30 minutes in, thats probably around when you will always get it. Being an item up doesn't add as much to you as other champs because your scaling is arbitrarily locked into your passive as bard. Also, I assume you have the frostqueens on a support build, not top because thats a huge waste otherwise. I'm confused what executioner item you are talking about. Executioners calling was removed from the game. My problem with the top scenario is that your E usually goes to waste, and your set up involves complete reliance on your Q and slow, one of which needs a wall/minion in the long lane that is top. I disagree with the Rabadon-RoA as you have less scaling in your kit than most mages. There is little reason to try to squeeze Bards kit for that. As for the community, I can't blame either side. I'm a player who feels normals are a place for practice and should usually be taken with some degree of decorum. If I have to deal with a 300 stack fed nasus@20 just because Bard cannot deal with Nasus' lifesteal, I'm going to be unhappy. On the other hand, I was around when Lucian, Syndra, and Rengar were first released, and the community didn't quite know what to do. Botrk first item on Lucian was common until someone pioneered BT Lucian(prior to bt rework). Rengar exploded with every single build when people figured out his resource bar. Maybe Bard was destined to be played as a pseudo dps "supportl top laner, much like Jungle nunu is played to support a strong adc. In the meantine, you are going to have a tough sell with Bard top unless you have: A. A 55-60%+ winrate, B, Some top-notch theorycrafting numbers, or C. Some other form of achievement that has large portions of it attributed to Bard top. I just worry that point and click champions will be the easy counter to your hard work. Best of Luck.

No-skill champion? Bard? PFFFFFFT HAHAHAHAHA

But seriously, they are scrubs. Bard is one of the harder champions to play successfully. When he's played right, he's a nightmare. Otherwise, he can just be a nuisance, and not do too much.

While I sympathize with you OP I do want to know how exactly you play Bard Top and not immediately get shat on by the "meta" champs.

Seriously though I'd love to see a guide or video about how you play Bard Top.

Ben Sharpio2 votes

If you want a guide i will make one... Maybe just not a video. I just don't think people will take it seriously based on the fact that my games are Normals and not Ranked. What do you think?

How does that change anything?

Ok, who the FUCK said that one of the highest skill-floor champions in the game is no-skill? And how come they manage to play? I didn't realize that rocks developed enough limbs to operate keyboards.

Y'now, I respect people who can play as Bard, it ain't easy to get the most out of the Caretaker.

Bard is difficult, but not in the way as in he has a high skill ceiling. He has bad stats, and if he doesn't build to beef them up he does poorly. While it might not be the difficulty some are used to, it still is difficulty. Is Bard top relevant? How the hell should I know? But what I do know is that Bard is a bit more difficult to play than some champions in the League. cough cough Riven, Vayne, Yasuo cough cough

Crossette1 votes

I play AD Bard top, and I win at least 80% of my games. Here's my build (looks weird but it works)

item 3078 item 3153 item 1304 item 3071 item 3046 item 3031

If there are any changes I should make that are painfully obvious go ahead and say them.

Well I'd also love to be able to toss my "skillshot" randomly in the wave and still get the stun on the 2 laners but unfortunately I need to aim it Nami
