Why is a game only worth playing if you are likely to win?

I can understand people being competitive, but I'm starting to think that people are forgetting what being competitive actually means.

So you are behind, a loss seems likely, if not inevitable, why does that mean you should just give up?

You think a victory is only worth your effort if you are ahead from 5 minutes?

Have you ever actually come back from a seemingly "In the bag" defeat?

There are few things that feel better.

Just picture it, your team is down and at halftime they come out and say that the game is over because a popular vote was in favor of surrendering.

I don't know about you, but as a fan, I'd be pissed.

Stop being a bunch of wussies and fight for the win that you think that you deserve, or at the very least make your enemies have to take it from you.

If you win all the time, you are not playing against enemies that are better than you, so you will never improve.

Far too often, winning a losing game has become less about me outplaying the enemy, and more about the opponents putting themselves out of position and squandering the lead.

For most of the most popular champions, there is almost no strategy involved once you get ahead anymore, which is probably a leading cause as to why they're so popular. You can just sit back on the power you've already accumulated and the disparity between the tools you have access too.

It's ironic, i actually prefer to play at a disadvantage. Though the problem is the lack of strategy needed part to keep pushing the lead. They just snowball and overwhelm you with raw power. If they get ahead, they keep getting head while you're forced to wait on their misplay. The longer they don't misplay, the further behind you get, the bigger the misplay you need to turn it around.

I'll be honest though, when i don't play off-meta picks, which don't require constant outplays to maintain a lead, i find it just as, if not more, less worth playing once i get ahead.

Comebacks have ALWAYS been about capitalizing on the enemy team making mistakes. That IS outplaying them.

If they play perfectly, then a comeback is impossible, this is and always has been the case. However, what you can improve upon by playing through games, is your understanding of how to capitalize on what mistakes.

The better you get at this, the easier it will be to turn small mistakes into comebacks.

"Oh but comebacks were easier in past seasons" Ok yeah, well most of us aren't still leveling accounts. Once you hit a certain point, everyone is steadily improving be they bronze or challenger. The fact of the matter is, you have to improve faster than the people around you. You think you improved over a couple seasons? Good! So did most of the people in Queue with you.

As the overall skill + Macroplay understanding of the LoL playerbase goes up, the likelihood of these comebacks SHOULD stay the same, right? WRONG. Because FF@20 is a thing, people will opt OUT of finishing a losing game, resulting in them not learning how to play from behind. The community (largely low ELO, but also to an extent high elo) as a result of this is learning how to snowball earlygame better than they are learning how to close out winning games, or stage comebacks.

They are also doing something that contradicts this, though. They are copying (largely) the meta they see at the highest available level of play. Pros usually play very safe champions that don't lose lanes / earlygames hard. If they do lose hard, then they have a very specific plan, they accounted for it. Maokai is a great example of this. Doesn't matter of Maokai dies in lane and is down 30cs, he is STILL plenty tanky for teamfights, especially since his team is there to back him up and support him. This even seeps into the AD Carry role, where the top tier is UTILITY carries. These champions don't give a damn if they don't win lane. Their utility (CC, vision) is not affected (largely) by gold income. The other thing these champions (the ones pros like to pick) have in common, is they do not like to give up leads easily. EXAMPLES: Ashe Cassiopeia Jhin LeeSin Maokai Nautilus Poppy Syndra Ryze These champions all have tools to dissuade shutdown attempts, be they disengage, mobility, CC, or INCREDIBLE tankiness. The amount of resources / champions it would take to shut them down (in pro play) is often too high to be worth the risk of dying, or even just losing time invested if you don't succeed.

This is why people don't understand that the value of vision goes UP when you are behind. This is why people think comebacks are impossible.

When I play League of Legends I PLAY League of Legends; I don't care if a game goes 1hr and 45 mins ( it happened once) I don't care if I go 0-10 but the game is still going on and I don't care if my team sucks but if you play something PLAY IT and finish what you started at least. "OMG my team sucks"

  • OK, what did you thought they were going to be good before the game started?

"This game should have been over by now"

  • So what? It's not ! Get over it and play to the finish

"I'm going to AFK"

  • So you logged in to play but something happened and you now you want to leave because of X happened, man I wish I could just AFK life!

"Surrender" WHY? If the game isn't over it's NOT OVER!! The enemy team are hitting the last two towers before nexus, what's the point at that point to surrender? Hell use that time to just sit back, relax, and think on why you lost in the first place.

I'm going to upvote your post Elite4runner because out of all of the people on the "gameplay" boards you actually make sense! +1

Same here!

I actually have started a new account this season. Right now I'm climbing in level before I can even get into ranked.

But I have decided that when I play PVP, I am going to focus less on "Did I win or lose?" and more on "Did I cs well? Did I ward? Did I look at my mini map often? Was I aware of where my allies / enemies were? Did I ping missing enemies? ...." Things like that so that I can be sure that I am evaluating my personal performance, and not that of my team.

And you know what? The game has been significantly less stressful and something that I can actually enjoy. As long as I keep this up, once these things become a habit, I am confident that I will win more often than I lose.

(actually, I do win more than I lose at the moment, but I'm only level 9 on that account. I mean when I get into ranked.)

Back in season 3 and 4, comebacks were fun and intense. If you were desperate and resourceful you had enough time to catch up as you scraped together as much cs as possible. Personally, as a total noob back then I endlessly split pushed with pure bloodthirster kog maw. Eventually I had so much freakin AD (500 from bloodthirsters) that they'd need to dedicate 2-3 people to me as long as kassadin wasn't around ;) Even in defeat, you could still make things happen. A pick here and there, back to back dragon gold and the odd tower or 2. You felt like you'd accomplished something and put up a decent fight despite losing it all in the end. The tension, the fact that you could see a potential victory and it was all down to YOU! and YOUR TEAM! to make that happen and the process of clawing your way to the top. That's what made it fun to lose for me and why I used to rarely FF (unless they had a fed af pre nerf kassadin XD)

In those seasons. I WOULD RATHER LOSE THAN WIN! BECAUSE THE TENSION MADE IT THAT DAM GEWD!

Now, it just isn't fun to drag it out. Dragon RNG heavily favours the team that's ahead rather than the team that's behind (more items, more dmg/speed because of it and better siege) and due to the sheer snowballyness of the meta-game, a game can be out of your control before you have time to do anything about it. All those little things you could make happen just don't matter.

  1. One pick doesn't mean anything against a team picking you off one by one as you flee from that skirmish.
  2. Towers may be weak, but people can rush to defend them faster than ever.
  3. Sure having dragons would give you an awesome advantage late-game, but what are the chances of you securing enough and even making it there?
  4. The combination of absurd mobility and dmg creep makes any desperate farming attempts painful and frustrating, as the moment you pop up on the minimap, you're dead and that's that.
  5. There is no tension, it's not in your control at all. It's all on the enemy team fucking up extremely badly and you being in a position to capitalise on that fuck up.

This overall just makes it unfun for me compared to what I've experienced in the past. So in that situation, I simply can't be stuffed playing out a game that I won't enjoy so I try to FF to end my suffering. Don't get me wrong, if you say no to the FF I will play out the game as normal, but I will try to ff again if things don't improve. There is no middle ground 90% of the time, you either stomp or get stomped with thrown games 10% of the time.

Mah 10 cents.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

Yeah, I have the same feeling. In cases where my whole team is wiped out and I spawn 15 seconds before everyone else while the enemy is taking out inner turrets I'll just sit in our fountain because the only thing that will come out of me going out to try and stop them is me being instantly deleted and yet my teammates will say, "Report Nami/Malphite/Maokai" or whatever just because I want to lose with a little bit of dignity.

The things Riot has introduced like reducing your ability to ward and increasing the snowballing potential of dragons has made it so it's so easy to just keep hitting the losing team every time they try to make a comeback.

TheSingularity2 votes

I miss being able to light up my jungle like a Christmas tree. Spirit of the ancient golem+upgraded ward totem (that costed a GOLD!) and vision wards were my go to combo to ensure dragons WERE MINE!

And I find myself doing the same. 2v5, why even bother contesting the nexus? If they don't kill it now, they'll simply play with their food, farm dragons, baron and elixirs that we can't afford till they finally shove down and finish it off. What a game league used to be.

DemainaNyx6 votes

I personally am of the opinion that I'm going to fight to the end. The only time I vote yes to surrender is when my team is flaming each other consistently, cause at that point, hoping these people will work together is pretty much never going to happen.

I've had games where my team is doing horribly, and one good team fight is all you need. Had a game where our mid Akali AFK'd like 5 minutes into the game, before she got her gunblade. We had a Darius top, Malphite jungle, Brand support, and Kog'maw ADC (me). Literally every team fight I was blown up instantly due to I think the Rengar jungle (old Rengar), so the rest of my team was left fighting 3v5 and normally they traded 3 for 3 or something like that cause Malph and Darius were just monsters this game. 50 minutes into the game, we had no mid inhib and no bot inhib. I actually did the "sell boots, buy, place, and sell zz'rot, buy boots again" trick to help stave off all the super minions trying to threaten our towers. One teamfight I wasn't instantly killed and we actually got all except the support Soraka and only lost Brand and Darius. That gave me the time needed to run down mid and take tier 2, inhib tower, and inhib before they respawned. From there we got a pick, got Baron, and pushed for the win.

It happens. The worst that could happen that game is we lose. Considering it was a 4v5 basically since the beginning, you just play differently. You try your best but just accept that whatever happens will happen cause you are at a disadvantage. If nothing else, take this time to try a different build or something. Maybe Rageblade Bork Ashe is a good vs the enemy comp. Maybe tank Ashe with Runaan's and Black Cleaver is better cause your top lane Fiora does more damage. Obviously don't troll, but building for the game can be better than just following the meta build, especially if you are at a disadvantage.

Elite4Runner3 votes

Great way to look at it.

You are already at a disadvantage.

The chances of winning are already pretty slim, so if you actually lose, you shouldn't really feel bad about it.

If you win however, ..

And yeah, it definitely makes sense to be a bit unconventional because your team is now missing a role.

As the ADC you have less teammates to tank and peel so you probably want to start to play more defensive, more like an off bruiser than a true ADC.

DemainaNyx4 votes

Exactly. That's one thing I learned from playing so much ARAM is sometimes you just have to accept what you're given and play with it.

Had a game where it was Ashe (me), Jinx, Varus, Azir, Jayce vs Braum, Anivia, Morgana, Maokai, and Soraka. It's obvious that building no MR is basically suicide this game and good luck out poking this team. I rushed Runaan's and IE, then built Merc Treads, Wit's End, Spirit's Visage, and Black Cleaver. The ADCs were getting one shot by the enemy and yet I could tank so much damage cause of my build, even 1v1'd an Anivia who landed her QRE combo despite my team danger pinging me the whole time.

If I had to replay this game, I probably would've skipped the IE and maybe gone for a Bloodthrister or Death's Dance instead.

I've had so many games even just today where it's clear the game is sorta thrown by one of your teammates. At a certain point, you just have to do your best and understand that you did what you could. Obviously they are still upsetting where you are doing good or at least even, and yet that 0/20 combined bot lane or that 1/10 mid probably means this game is over already. Still, you can't really do anything about those players, all you can do is do your best to carry this game and hope maybe the enemy just throws.

Elite4Runner3 votes

Funny that you mention it. I had a similar experience in a game as Ashe on my new account last week. I was bottom lane with a Warwick support against a Viktor ADC and Master Yi support (as I said, NEW account. I think I was level 7 at the time, so I was playing with and against noobs, smurfs, and probably trolls who had to make a new account because their old one got banned.). Knowing I was going to be against the Viktor, I decided to Wits End so that I could get that attack speed, on-hit magic damage, and steal his MR. At some point my WW started roaming and starting fights at every turn without actually leading into objectives. Meanwhile I would basically split push the side lanes. I think I actually ended up with something like Wits End, BoRK, Runnan's, and Beserker's. Literal shit build, but I was able to shred through minions and towers. We were actually well behind in deaths, levels, and gold, but we had more towers than the enemy because of me.

What's funny is that I actually finished the match with 0 kills, a few deaths and assists (I don't remember the exact score and for some reason it is not showing on op.gg). I was laughing about my 0 kills in the post game lobby and one of the enemy players said I sucked, which really only made me laugh more.

It's funny because even my own teammates probably thought that I sucked, but the truth is, we would have lost if it wasn't for me.

I can understand people being competitive, but I'm starting to think that people are forgetting what being competitive actually means.

This is not necessarily the reason people are playing. To assume that people are playing for the reason you are is odd. Most people play on the ladder to climb to a destination to prove their worth. Normal draft tends to be where people care about having a good game. Competitive in league has a slight distorted meaning cause of the ladder and how it changes the goal of the game.

So you are behind, a loss seems likely, if not inevitable, why does that mean you should just give up?

For rank there was a "study" (using term losely) it is more productive to ff at 20 and grind more games in order to climb. As league has matured it is hard and harder for the winning team to actually throw. Especially at the higher Elos. But putting in that kind of work is stressful and tiring, causing people to be able less games at top mentality.

You think a victory is only worth your effort if you are ahead from 5 minutes?

X gold disadvantage verus time management. You are looking at this the wrong way. It is not that people are not a head, it is how far they are behind. Safty playing is again stressful and not very interesting.

Have you ever actually come back from a seemingly "In the bag" defeat?

Most classes can not even achieve this.

Could you imagine if professional players had this same mentality? Pro League and other sports.

actually in season 2 and 3 a forfeit used to be common. It actually speed the night up and was interesting to see what was a hopeless situation. Not every team in the world did CJ fire famously held out a few times at 3 inhibs down. The odds were so against the players but they believed in their comp and fought on. I pretty sure the reason ff do not happen anymore is cause Riot games has told the players not to.

Though pro play has gotten pretty good to putting the game to a point where it is a flip of the coin anymore. Super late team fight with everyone having full items, just which side of the map it is happening on.

Just picture it, your team is down and at halftime they come out and say that the game is over because a popular vote was in favor of surrendering.

This is not IRL sport where you can push your body beyond its normal limits. There are a very small and limited amount of actions that effect a league game. IRL people get hurt, sick, actual ability to miss preform ect. If you point ashe's arrow in the right direction it is not going to fall short. In basket ball their are a lot of things that can go wrong like in shooting that is not even closely simulated by league.

I don't know about you, but as a fan, I'd be pissed.

Stop being a bunch of wussies and fight for the win that you think that you deserve, or at the very least make your enemies have to take it from you.

how childish

If you win all the time, you are not playing against enemies that are better than you, so you will never improve.

not even why everyone is playing. Also very little improvement can be gained from beyond a certain point. If you are down 10 k in game you are actually beyond any meaningful learning experience, cause you did so poorly.

Also when you are straight up stomped you can learn bad habits in order to lose less, instead of playing to win. Their is no coach at the end of a game helping you figure out what to do. There are reasons why 1v1s have rules of first blood, tower, or first to 100 CS. At a certain point games roll out of the control of one player.

The best way to learn is not be stuck in a overwhelming match and to experience as many different situations as possible. Grinding more games in a shorter period is healthier than being stuck behind for 50 minutes.

Elite4Runner3 votes

Look, I'm not saying that the option to surrender should be removed. As someone else has said already, there is a lot to be said for knowing when to throw in the towel.

My problem is with the people who do so way before the game is even close to being lost.

In fact, in many of those cases, the loss only becomes inevitable BECAUSE they have given up and left their team out to dry.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

I think a lot of people should keep in mind how mentally taxing it is to play every game "to the death" as it were. Doing that every once in a while for a game that's worth it is one thing but when there's always two people in every game that refuse to just accept defeat it really wears a person down.

I'm of the same mind-set i do not give up, personally you learn more form losing both playing the game and watching the VoD, this way you learn to fight from behind and where to go, if you can't take losing gracefully your not a true competitor if you are competitive (ok dependant on age i guess) you do need to learn to lose.

I would rather lose a tough game than win in a landslide. I would rather lose in a landslide than give up. Without challenge, I will never improve.

It's not that black and white, when people start a surrender vote, it's usually because they arent having fun in the game anymore.

I don't give up easily. I give up only when I know we will lose if we keep playing. I only say my team sucks when everyone except me is feeding because I'm also bad or i would be gold+ or they do completely stupid shit that makes you facepalm. I try not to afk and I take time into consideration but when the internet decides to go down or the power goes out, that's a problem. Also I had a 90 minute game where I was tryndamere and the enemy had a vayne top and I beat her in lane and destroyed all the towers and I stopped paying attention to her and she got fed af and I couldn't fight because I'd get kitted. What I did when I had full build was I kept pushing other lanes and destroying towers until all they had left was Nexus turrets and I would solo Baron since I can do that with the buildi run. It's ionian, ie, stattik shiv, black cleaver, botrk, and R Hydra. But even then, it was why can we end. It was at the point where I didn't care who won and all 10 of us were joking about how we can do this all day. We eventually won a teamfight and then we won the game. It's moments like those where you have a great time weather you do good or not and have a nice time that keep me coming back for more and not being like "this game isn't fun and all the smarter players have already moved over to cs:go, tf2, and overwatch".

Very simple concept.

Oh hey we cant team fight, they have all objectives, we havent taken a single tower......

charging in and feeding isnt fun.

It also doesn't help that even if the game is heading towards an obvious loss that everybody in the game can see, you still can't make risky plays to try to pull some sort of advantage back to your team, because your team will immediately jump on your back and start threatening reports for having too many deaths. So you're basically stuck in a situation where you can't do anything at all.

I go into every game planning to make them take the nexus. I have pretty strict requirements for me agreeing to a surrender, it doesn't happen all that often. This is why I played Dominion.

The lack of snowballing and the nature of the game's win-condition meant that it was never over until you were staring at the defeat screen. The never say die attitude of the player base combined the with the fact that it was a team game right from the gate meant that the usual scapgoating and toxicity of Rift didn't exist for the most part.

On Rift, especially in recent Seasons, the game is often decided in the first ten to fifteen minutes. Everything after that is just how long it takes to close the game out, barring any amazing screwups on the winning team's side.

I just played a game today. My ap Lee insta lock jungler got invaded and died so he quit. The rest of my team refused to give up. We immidiatly grouped up and forced the game into the mid game by pushing mid. We took all 3 towers up to the inhibitor. We failed to get it but we kept pressing forward. Trading 3 for 4. The game made it to 42 minutes and while we were pushing bot lane they went to baron knowing that we couldn't contest. We took the bottom lane towers and inhibitor and I was told to back. My team died leaving me to defend. I took out as many minions as I could but they were strong because or the baron buff. I saw that my team was just coming back up and they were about to take our first base tower so I dove in and forced the enemies onto me basically sacrificing myself for the tower. My team came alive and pushed them out of the base.

Being down a player we needed some lane pressure so we all built zzrot portals. 2 heading towards bottom and one for mid lane and we pushed top together. The zzrot held off the minions long enough for us to push and win the game.

Teamwork wins games.

i like to look at losing as a learning experience, im down a few levels and an item, time to figure out just what im capable of

I hate when a team brings up the surrender vote because we're behind one turret, but have the ability to win team fights. So the vote fails 3/2; get's turret while enemy is at drake. team fight occurs;enemy aced and two left alive on your team. what happens? the pressure from that fight gives you turret, inhib and you end up winning like 10 minutes later.

The problem is, this doesn't happen as often as people want to pretend for the sake of their "never give up" narrative. More often than not the person who lost that turret is also hard losing lane and on tilt, and it spreads.

I can only have fun if I meet the objective. The objective of LoL is to win, if I don't win I can't have fun. So I surrender if I even THINK I'm going to lose. Even if I do achieve a comeback victory it isn't worth it, far to stressful from being worried about losing the whole time and wasting the time I took trying.

For this reason I do mostly play single-player games, however the silly part of me that thinks "maybe this time'll be different" keeps me crawling back from time to time. Though Riot destroying the old lore has helped me stay away.

But what causes you to feel that you can only have fun if you achieve the objective? Why not try to learn from your mistakes?

Experience? I've never enjoyed a game I didn't win.

Learning isn't fun, for me at least. Anger from losing also distracts.

That's... a little sad. You're never going to be satisfied in life if you have ot succeed at everything.

And that is why I am an unhappy person.

Tried league again just now. Lost horribly, regretted trying at all.

Try heroes of the storm. It's a lot more forgiving than league, and since the xp is shared it makes the game as a whole a lot less stressful.

Already tried it, to much the same result.

Thank you for the suggestion, the consideration is appreciated.

It's no problem. Lucio is coming, and teh game is toning down a bit, so maybe give it one more try, but I hope you can find something that makes you happy soon.
