Champions that are fun to play against?

So, I've seen many champions being called unfun to play against/toxic:

Akali Blitzcrank Braum Darius Evelynn Fiddlesticks Fiora Fizz Gangplank Gnar Heimerdinger Irelia Kalista LeeSin Kayle Katarina Malzahar Lulu Malphite Morgana Nidalee Pantheon Rammus Rengar Shaco Singed Teemo Thresh Tristana Tryndamere Vayne Veigar MonkeyKing Xerath Yasuo Yorick Zed Ziggs Zilean and a few others. While not fully agreeing on most of them, I agree that these guys are actually a big pain if they get ahead. (or exist in Blitz/Teemo's case)

Can anyone give me a list of not unfun champions to play against? As far as I am aware, people only have fun when they are dominating and steamrolling, so I am not sure what kind of guy you would like to face. I actually really like Vel'Koz. Compared to everyone else this year, he is balanced. Not an overloaded kit, clear weaknesses (mana, no mobility, squishy) and clear strengths. And no, I don't play him, I am not biased :P

So who do you, summoners (oops, lore change), like to face on the Rift? Who do you hate to face and haven't seen in this list (I will add for sure, if its plausible)?

I liked playing against Cassiopeia Cassiopeia pre-rework. You had to be on your toes, it was really fun in lane.

Now it's just... eh. You look at her funny and she sorta blows up.

Can't not agree T.T I miss old Cass and old Sion tbh...

I found playing against old Cass annoying. Get hit by 1 Q and you are forced to B.

Or i'm just recalling the time when Cass had damage and i didn't know how to counter build.

What makes a champ unfun for me is when the champ requires no skill to play well. For example: teemo. Teemo literally just auto attacks and wins. I don't mind losing lane as long as the other person obviously put a lot of work into it, making cool plays to kill me. I don't mind that at all.

Karthus He always dies. :D

Actually, Karhus in lane is quite easy to beat, and half of his effectiveness is while he is dead. I guess you can say he is rather un-toxic. But it sucks when you are recalling with 12 HP and then that blue-ish line of magic power prepares to blast you to your doom :/

Darius Corki Aatrox Gragas Jayce Rengar Singed Trundle Velkoz

And that's about it for me. Playing against these guys is almost always enjoyable in some way, even if I lose. Each one brings something unique and challenging about them to keep me on my toes.

Jayce now is called a Nidalee 2.0 due to Worlds though :c Despite being the same for ages...

Acolyte of Steel1 votes

Part of why I enjoy him; he's similar to Nidalee, but requires a little more set-up time - which is enough for you to potentially avoid it. REALLY keeps me on my toes! :)

This is more about matchups than anything else.

For example, playing against Teemo as Darius isn't unfun. It's about that little margin between Teemo range and Darius' apprehend and whoever abuses it better wins. It's quite possible for the matchup to go both ways. On the other hand playing against Teemo as Master Yi is just a completely destroyed lane, with very little chances for Master Yi to win (I assume both players are at similar skill level).

Anyway, I consider playing against champions fun if most of their matchups have a lot of interaction between players and have sufficient amount of counter play available. Oh, and also if their numbers are balanced.

Some examples: Cho'Gath, Draven, Graves, Jayce, Nami, Vel'Koz, Wukong. Those are only a few, but I feel like most of those champions have a rather big weaknesses that can be exploited by anyone (or nearly anyone) while also having strength that they can use themselves. Of course the list is much longer, but that's a few that came to mind.

What I consider to be unfun is when champion you play against feels like either:

  1. You have to be stronger number-wise to beat him, just because his kit doesn't allow counterplay for most of champions.
  2. Enemy champion have a big advantage in numbers or tools (for no reason other than picking a champion).

I'll name a few champs I consider unfun with a bit of explanation: Akali Huge amount of spell vamp that doesn't fit the champion at all, especially at later parts of the game. High armor for no reason. LeeSin Too high numbers on his kit (both skills and base stats) considering how much utility he have. Mostly goes for movement speed for his base stats (considering how much mobility he have in his kit, I really don't think he needs that much ms) and his ultimate base damage (200/400/600 on top of already good CC and it can be AoE). Thresh Just waaaay too many tools in one kit (especially the lantern is the culprit here). Vayne %Health true damage. Makes every defensive stats useless against this skill. I really think this should be physical or magical damage (with buffed up values of course, or some other change to compensate). Yasuo Free stats in form of double crit chance, additional 50 range on AA (175 as opposed to normal 125 range) and 50% free bonus armor penetration on ultimate. His W have no viable counterplay (you can't move it, it's too big to reposition yourself to the sides, blocks projectiles from every side, you can't break it... Really, all you can do is just wait till it ends - and moving through it is simply not viable in most scenarios). His E makes skillshots nearly useless on lane (as he can just E to minion at any given time). I truly believe this is the reason why he still maintains a huge ban rate even after all nerfs. Yorick Usually there is very little interaction on this lane. Zed Needlessly high defensive stats (especially if you consider all that mobility he have). A lot of free AD later on in the game.

Proxy Singed IMO this thing is beyond anything as far as unfun goes. There is no interaction, you cannot do much by yourself (would cost you too much farm and experience) and he ends up being incredibly strong in the end. This have to go. I think that giving minions a lot of extra stats or shield until they reach the last living turret in the lane would fix it (let's say 100 Armor and Magic resist or 250+15 per 3 minute of game shield). The shield could go off just as the minions get into turret range and I don't think it would have much impact beside the Proxy Singed (or other Proxy champions). This is extremely imporant right now since Singed have started to gain on popularity again, and while I don't have anything against him in lane, the proxy one is just hell.

Ezreal is probably the only champ I actually like playing against. His Qs have a meaningful cost, a reasonable cadence, and appropriate damage for their drawback. He's slippery but not uncatchable; his E has a meaningful CD and mana cost. All-inning you is a risky proposition for him because it blows his only escape (bar Flash) - so if he miscalculated or you outplay him, you can punish him. His ult has a long wind-up time, so he has to spend conscious effort finding a good time to use it in a bot-lane skirmish - something you can take advantage of if you have a more reliable ult.

A good Ezreal is able to understand his opponents and his own capabilities, and make plays off of that; and if he messes up, he will be punished for it. That second part in particular seems to be especially lacking in recent releases...

Oh darn it was so horrible being a melee champion against blue EZ especially if you had little mobility... well luckily blue EZ needed quite a bit of items before he gets going

I honestly can't think of a champion that's fun to play against, this is a very difficult question.

Talamare1 votes

Champions that are unfun to play against are the champions that makes you feel like you didn't have a chance

Ones that either killed you instantly or made you hate yourself while fighting them

Brom, GP and Ziggs are comparatively not as bad as the other ones listed

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

A lot of people will say any champion they are losing to is not fun to play against.

Personally, I have fun playing as and against melee champions. I find that it involves more regular trading and fighting instead of poke and waveclear.

Direwolfiez1 votes

I actually like playing against Thresh. You can hear his Q's wind up, and can dodge it quite easily if you're coordinated enough. Or just play Ez and E out of it. So fun to troll Threshs and Blitzs as Ez.

if you consider crowd control unfun, then any champion with significant crowd control is not fun to play against if you consider getting burst down before you can react unfun, then those champions are also removed from the list if you consider champions who just sit in lane and farm while taking all your damage unfun, then those are removed too not really sure who, if anyone, is left. maybe Ezreal

Direwolfiez1 votes

Ezreal vs Jinx is pretty fun for both sides, IMO.

Difficult question actually. If you're on the losing side, any lane might not seem as fun as if you were winning. However, most people can take a loss so long as it feels like they were beaten because they were outplayed or the enemy player is simply better. You don't really see people posting on the forums going "You know who is fun to lose against? This guy!" It's just not what people do. But when people lose to say Fizz, it feels unfair and unfun because of the lack of balance in those type of champions.

Any champ that brings something new and interactive for the laning phase is fun to be up against. Those who have clear weaknesses and strengths, and those that you have to be on your toes ready to respond and counter whatever they are planning to do. I think Aatrox is a good example, with high damage and sustain but horrible base stats at the start of the game and the potential to be kited. In lane, you have to be looking out for good opportunities for him to engage you and be ready to dodge the Q. You also need to know when is a good time to engage onto him, maybe right after a W proc or after he uses his E for waveclear. Just pay attention to what he is doing and you can counter it and win hard.

there are few champion i have fun going against i named some of them.

  1. Blitzcrank Dodge his q and he lost his kill potential.
  2. Diana Most of her damage is in her q and r. By dodging her q, she lost her kill potential and easy to trade.
  3. Karthus this champion is fun to dodge his q and run away from him when he dies. oh crap ult.
  4. Lissandra Just don't get close to ur minions against her
  5. Lux dodge her q and e and lost her kill potential
  6. Riven time her q and e for meaningful trades
  7. Sion love him missing his q and r.
  8. Thresh fun to see players who can be madlife
  9. TwistedFate just dodge his q and timed his w. Make sure u call out when he has ult. this guy makes you communicate with your team.
  10. Velkoz love to dodge his q and the outplays he miss all of that.
  11. Ziggs his q has one of worst hitbox. felt fair going against him.

Champions i hate going against

  1. Akali Kassadin Katarina really hard to trade against them after lvl 6. felt unfair against them b/c no reaction time.
  2. Azir Fizz Lulu Tristana Morgana Irelia Heimerdinger Jayce Nidalee Yorick Teemo almost impossible to trade lane against due to no open opportunity or play really safe.
  3. Evelynn Rengar Shaco god those jg gave me a heart atk and almost hard to kill them due to their stealth.

As a Heimerdinger main, my unfun list is: Jayce Riven MonkeyKing Ziggs Syndra Cassiopeia Xerath BrandMordekaiser Morgana

and my fun list is: Ryze Rumble Fiora Pantheon Leblanc and sometimes Akali Fizz Kassadin if our junglers are 50:50

I just want to talk about two champions on your "unfun" list (I agree with most of your choices... though I would add MasterYi to the list).

Akali I main Akali (because she looked cool in the [old] splash art; I didn't realize I had picked someone amazing as my main until later), so maybe it gives me insight into beating her. She is incredibly easy to make irrelevant; CC and AoE her shroud. Also, her ult isn't spammable, even with CDR runes and masteries, making her kitable if you hit hard enough (I find her pretty damn easy to deal with on Caitlyn using her net for cc and disengage and her Q for shroud). To be fair, there is no saving you if she gets ahead though; this is true of any feast/famine champ.

Evelynn This is my jungler and she is utterly useless in general. She has been nerfed into oblivion and is pretty terrible in the new jungle. She can't lane. Not sure how she is toxic/unfun to face. I can see her as a toxic/troll pick for your own team however (which is why for me she is currently relegated to bot games).

Now, since you asked who I like to play against:

Akali I enjoy facing a champ I know really well.

Ashe If she is well played, she has a lot of strategic diversity that makes you have to think to kill her; especially with a good support partner (Ashe/Leona is pretty brutal).

Shen I think Shen is a very underrated champion. I have played alongside and against some competent Shen players; a competent Shen on the opposing team forces you to really think about every engagement (is his ult up? Are you about to be in a 1v2 you aren't prepared to handle?). His taunt makes turret diving extremely dangerous and can keep you off that Assassin or ADC that is about to ruin your day. He forces you to pay attention to him even if he isn't in your lane.

Junkο1 votes

I love playing against TF, he is so spuishy that if he makes one mistake you force him out of lane or kill him.

Also Evelynn, i used to hate her in Preseason 4 becuase of all the vision changes that made it really hard to counter her. She got olaf'd and now she is a free kill everytime she ganks you.

Minrog1 votes

I enjoy fighting almost all the champs, tbh. Take someone like Annie, I know what she's going to do. So the question is whether I can counter or avoid her all-ins at lvl 6+. If she gets me with her Tibbers combo, it means that I was outplayed somehow and I have only myself to blame. The same with Karthus or Ashe.

Characters like Singed where you can't counter them and they go 0/15 and still drastically impact the game, those are the ones I don't like. I find them the least fun, because I can't do anything to them. Nidalee is sort of the same deal. She can do whatever she feels like and not get punished because of her escape abilities. It's all about counterplay. Having to Ignore a character all game because you can never punish them is crappy.

just an even skill match-up does the trick for me
