Because then you're left with A: A champion you can't craft because you already have it B: Essence you can't use because you have all the champions C: A waste of a chest and key

That is kind of a lame solution though. When you havw all champs, your IP builds up quite a bit. Any time a new champ comes out, I can instantly buy them because I just have so much extra IP to spend.

Unless Riot decides to release like 10 champions in one patch, my IP is pretty safe way up there.

Riot mentioned that they're planning on using the Hextech crafting as a way for people to upgrade their champion mastery past level 5, I think it was suggested to have up to level 8 or so. I rem hearing this a long time ago, before the Hextech was even in the pbe so maybe they forgot about it or are still planning on adding this in time.

i bought the 900 rp hextech 5 chest kit just to get a feals 3/5 where champs.... i own all the champs on the plus i got the option for the worst garen skin todate yeah!the fealers are SALTAY

I think they said champion shards will eventually be used to increase mastery cap.

I.e. A blitz crank shard will increase blitz mastery from 5 to 6. I am not 100% sure if they are sticking with that idea tho.
