We have been testing a Zed nerf, where there's a one second delay before he's able to reactivate his ult. Goal there's to add a slightly longer response window to Zed's all in. Not sure off the top of the head if that's in 5.09 or being tested further in 5.10 (think it's 5.09 and going live soon, not 100% sure though). If that change results in a healthier play pattern for Zed, but leaves him too weak, that would also give us the opportunity to put a bit of power into something else instead

Can we get this added to LeBlanc's W as well?

RiotMeddler12 votes

If it works out well on Zed we'd consider adding it to Le Blanc and again, if appropriate, put power elsewhere instead. Would want to see how it affects Zed first before doing that assessment though.

You could just remove his ability to swap with his shadows. He'd be a lot more balanced right there. Feel free to give him more power after that, but at least he won't be able to tower dive and get out without a scratch anymore.

Not really, there's nothing more aggravating as any champion than to aim where your enemy is, to suddenly find him away, or in your face, especially a champion with as much bloody damage to his kit as Zed. And don't tell me not to poke unless his shadow is down, it's practically never down.

I strongly feel a reactivation time on LeBlanc W would help bring her in line a lot while retaining her damage. As is currently, even if you read her dash correctly, due to the cast time of abilities she will still land and blink back before AOE/non-targeted casting abilities resolve. There's no incentive to try and predict but have a lottery shot you get the timing right. It's an intensely skewed dynamic where LeBlanc's enemy needs an expotential more amount of input to counter act what she does.

I was just about to ask the same thing, thanks for taking that into consideration, i've been proposing this change to LeBlanc since ever and I'm glad you are looking into it :)

I'm wondering how 1 second delay on the return could leave him too weak.

Really proficient Zeds currently get their burst combo off on a target extremely quickly (0.25-0.5 seconds at a very rough guess), so this is adding a noticeable amount of extra time in which Zed can attacked by his victim or their nearby allies. His damage shouldn't be affected, so he'll still get the kill if he was going to previously, but he'll be at greater risk of dying for it, so will either have to pick his engages more selectively or be willing to trade himself for the target sometimes.

How much of a power change that results in is open to debate of course, I'd certainly expect to see some drop in his performance though, especially as people adapt to the change.

Why don't you hit something else, like his waveclear? It's been his biggest problem for the longest time; someone with (less now) risky and unguaranteed assassination being able to farm like crazy instead of snowballing off kills

You guys did this to him before as well with the W speed nerf, all it really does is push him out of the meta for a bit and make him less enjoyable to play before he comes back again

And finally: What brought this on? LB is played significantly more in competitive games, and has a higher ban rate in solo queue, as well as being safer in general. Why isn't she the guinea pig?

I believe the reason they're doing this experiment on zed rather than leblanc is because zed, as a general rule, won't kill you in less than one second (unless REALLY fed), but he might deal enough damage in that second to make you die to his ultimate's explosion, and he can do stuff like insta-swap back with shadow after ulting and kill you using his shadow's spells, out of harm's way. LeBlanc OTOH usually either is fed enough to insta blow you up after Wing OR she is forced to stay for longer than a second anyways to finish you off (ex: wait for E to detonate). Also, this change screws over Zed's R, but not his W; it would screw over LB's W AND R (after mimicking W), since both function similar to zed's R (that is, Dash forward with the option to go back; different from zed, she doesn't have the option to leave a mark first and then decide to go there or not, like his W)

I'm not trying to say that zed necessarily deserves a nerf more than leblanc, but rather that I do think this nerf makes more sense on zed than on leblanc (and I do play both of those champions and think that, regardless, this nerf will feel like shit. Gameplay nerfs suck)

Because mages aren't the only thing with ranged wave clear for crying out loud.

LB is harder to nerf without making her useless ... and anyone who's ever played her and/or knows how to play against her knows how high her skill cap is. Not that Zed's isn't but his target selection is a lot easier.

Cuix2 votes

Wouldn't this result in a much more feast-or-famine Zed? In order to get off a kill without dying, he'd need to pick off a target that is fully unable to kill him in response and does not have anyone nearby to stop him from getting away. This means that he'd need to be either fed or against a low-CC team, which seems like it'll result in a Zed that's either hoping to make a 4v4 or simply snowballing. That seems unhealthy. I'm left thinking about the rationale for changes (and sometimes the lack thereof) for Shaco, Talon, and LeBlanc.

Mephistophilis2 votes

This change is well deserved. But imo you shouldn't stop to this, giving the occasion you could also reduce the potential to farm freely, that shouldn't be a thing for assassins. Maybe making the passive to not work on minions, or reducing the dmg dealt by abilities on minions, making last-hit less easier. Rigth now is too easy for Zed to farm and remain in lane even if zoned well. In exchange for this changes you could always buff him on the assassin side, like dmg on champions, cooldowns and such.

Teridax681 votes

Would you consider giving Zed a 1-second global cooldown on his ability casts and recasts (similar to Udyr and Sona)? The latter two need them because of their stance dancing, but if Zed's problem is that he can just pile on his entire combo in under a 1-second window, rather than over the 3 seconds allowed by his ult, wouldn't the ideal solution be to force his ability sequence to be more spaced out? It would also telegraph his laning poke pattern a bit better, since a common source of frustration comes from his instant long-range Living Shadow + Razor Shuriken combo, which has a lot in common with Lulu's Help Pix + Glitterlance poke that got her mana costs increased. This would be a huge nerf in itself, but would also allow Zed to go absolutely nuts elsewhere (more Living Shadows in combat, for example).

Assassins need to be quick, 3 seconds in game is very slow compared to most assassins (LeBlanc, Talon, Rengar, etc...). Zed is already slower as he relies on the pop.

It's going to be the end of Zed because he'll almost always up getting chain CC'd, which will make him unable to deal damage. So yeah, be ready to buff him real quick.

i main zed so i don't really thinkif the nerf is good because zed is great at tower diving because when u let and land your combo u switch back to your shadow and barely take damage and yea it might take longer than 1 sec to do your combo but if you miss your q when your turret diving and u know your deathmark won't kill them u want to be able to switch back to your shadow and take barely any damage and re position your self but if it has a 1 sec delay if you tower dive and miss u would have to wait 1 sec under the turret to switch back to your shadow so i don't think he is as powerful now because of the nerf because as i mention he is great at ult ing people under their turret and taking barely any damage but if u miss your q u and u know its over u want to be able to switch back to your shadow not under the turret so i really disagree with this nerf

Give it at least the next PBE cycle because a lot of Zeds rely on instantly swapping with the ult shadow to win certain matchups. One of the good things about Zed is that most of his matchups are skill based. Now several matchups like Zed vs Ahri are no longer based on who the better player is. Zed would either be in point blank Charm range, or burn all of his mobility to avoid Ahri's damage, mind you she can now avoid all of Zed's damage with Spirit Rush.

TL;DR: Wait until 5.10 at least, keep most of Zed's matchups as skill matchups, makes the match ups quite fun.

Which is still as useless as a nerf as that AS nerf. It takes almost a full second for him to finish the combo he desires when ulying anyway, so the 1 second cool down is still meaningless, just like the AS nerf.

BluePolarizer2 votes

No, what it means is that some of his previous even matchups are gonna be stomps for him, while those even matchup champs essentially have no weakness.

For example, Ahri has absolutely zero weaknesses. She is more mobile than Zed, hits harder than Zed, has longer range than Zed. The only way a Zed could beat an Ahri was ulting then swapping back with his shadow to dodge the Ahri Q or E, then W'ing in for the kill. Now there is absolutely NO way for Zed to kill Ahri, just like there's no way for most mids to kill Ahri.

VasilisGreen1 votes

There are many batchups that are bad for zed. Ahri is a physical counter but she is not unbeatable. for most matchups, it's all about timing. For instance, Azir can mess up zed's ult. As soon as Zed ult's, Pop Emperor's divide directly begind you. the cast time is just enough to knock zed far bac and then you can use your WQE combo to bend a soldier and escape. faker vs febivetried it but messed up the timing... that's not zed's problem, it's the opposing champion's miss. this way they are actively lowering the skill cap of the AP mids... you now need less skill to counter a champion that already has enough counterplay.

0GameDos01 votes

you guys choose the ######## time to nerf an assassin really , an assassin nerf in the tank meta ? COMMON zed was one of the few assassins who could beat tanks (passive plus BoTRK) but now the enemy has time to cc him , why are you helping tanks ????

tl;dr nice nerf,wrong time

I have a question for you that seems related to this discussion and I don't know where else I could ask it.

Why can't I spellshield any portion of Zed's Ult besides it's initial cast? For example. Zed clicks R on me. I can spellshield that (If I am Nocturne or Sivir... Maybe Banshee's should be an active item? Another time...) but since there is no animation windup it's nearly impossible to block without pure prediction foresight.

When Zed "Lands" on you he places an effect, but you can't block that, however, that's when you can use QSS' cleanse to remove his mark, but you can't block this? You also can't block the pop either. This seems really silly.

Unrelated;related. You also can't block activation tethers such as Leblanc's Chains or Nocturne's Fear after they've already landed and that's pretty silly too.

Hey, remember this?

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/patch/patch-52-notes

Might I also quote,

"Zed Less attack speed all around.

In the 5.1 notes, we mentioned Zed as a good example of what we refer to as a "Healthy Assassin" - but that doesn't come without its own set of balancing woes. To help bring Zed in line with other champions while preserving his power as a competitive option, we've looked toward his strengths outside of pure assassination - in this case, attacking his ability to split-push by lowering his attack speed."

VS this thread.

"If that change results in a healthier play pattern for Zed, but leaves him too weak, that would also give us the opportunity to put a bit of power into something else instead"

What is "healthy" and "unhealthy" anymore, do you just say these things arbitrarily?

Why nerf his ult in the middle of a TANK meta full of heavy cc and disables, in which at the same time a new mid-laner(Ekko) is to be released? Why is a "healthy" and "well-balanced" champion viable and okay with you guys several patches ago, but all of a sudden "broken" as soon as zed isn't as viable as he used to be. I just love it, you guys don't do sh*t about the rise of tanks and the lack-thereof proper itemization to kill them faster and efficiently (removal of DFG), but would rather focus on the completely now obsolete assassin role, despite having been butchered, and made into cannon-fodder.

Seriously, I've seen you guys gut alot of champions, and this has to be one of the worst. Primarily due to the fact zed can STILL be cc'ed right after using his ult EVEN BEFORE THE NERF, and people who can't figure out how to do so don't DESERVE counter play, when there are items like QSS and Zhonya's, there is already a sh*tload of counterplay against zed. If you guys want to do this, and keep this change, the only reason I could see for justifying it is if you allowed for Zed's ult to not be affected by either QSS or Zhonya's, because at this point, Zed is SO easy to counter, even breaking even on kills seems like a miracle if not having laned against a complete idiot.

What more power could an assassin with manaless abilities need? The only thing he did need was the ability to let people counterplay his ult, which this change does.

ReoKim1 votes

man.... I've played zed. after 5.9patch, i can't disagree this zed nerf is too critcal to play him... hes assassin who kills champs quickly and returns. why nerf zed? zed is the most famous champ of league legend. if u guys nerf zed, zed's super play will be decreased... think about zeds feature... hes not tanky. he has to use ult to kill enemies quickly and return to shadow. u guys already nerfed attack speed. thats enough

VasilisGreen1 votes

If he is too weak after that, just revert it and nerf something else.. and btw, it's been a while since the nerf... he is weaker. revert it and find a real nerf without messing with his mechanics... and fix that WQ bug already, it's been almost a year.
