Rioter thoughts on Caitlyn?

AFilthyCaitMain··8 votes·630 views

Caitlyn is a highly controversial champion on these boards at the moment. Most people either think shes insanely overpowered, or shes balanced; there seems to be no in between. But it would be nice to see a rioters view on Caitlyn and her state of gameplay. Thanks!

shes not "insanely overpowered". she's just toxic and auto wins lane phase. she is balanced around her trash tier mid game if she is not insanely ahead. But the problem is she has too easy of a time getting ahead and is an auto win in lane if not camped and support matchup isn't bad.

Caitlyn has always been damn good in lane, but right now she's just too good in lane. they need to hit her laning not her single target DPS just a little. Keep her lane strong, but not oppressive. the traps in lane are just too much to deal with, but they are an integral part of her kit. Cait right now can either beat you by out ranging you or pushing you in and poking/trapping you under tower all day. If she's not ganked you will lose the lane most of the time in even skill matchups.

they need to really look at either shifting her lane phase power or straight up nerfing it a little. she's too good in that aspect that it makes her able to snowball and win lane so easily. Good caits will literally force you low by level 3 and can take your tower before first back if left unchecked by your jungler.

Headshot no longer stacks multiple times per attack with Hurricane. Caitlyn's lacking in clear enough weaknesses and one she should have is lower single target DPS late game than most marksmen with similar builds. Hurricane's currently making it so her teamfight single target damage is higher than we suspect it should be however, at the same time also constricting her build paths. Testing a change as a result.

God i'm sick of copy pasting this. This is a quote from Meddler from a quick thoughts from about a week ago. This is a very substantial nerf if it goes through. Stop farming upvotes.

Im not really if youll read my position on the nerf. I dont want that nerf, and most disagree.

Chief Mayonnaise1 votes

Why? It's a very reasonable nerf. It nerfs her mid/lategame damage and waveclear while leaving her strong early game alone.

Her whole shtick is a strong, safe early game, weak mid, and decent, but not remarkable late game. This nerf enhances those weaknesses while leaving her strengths relatively untouched.

theres a lot of reasons why runaans should not be touched. Her kit is too reliant on it, like drugs. (lol) But without it her passove pretty much falls off after early game. Well... what does she have then?? as only her traps are going to be her only real damage source. You have to consider how elegantly Runaans fits into her kit and all the ways she uses it to understand how badly this would gut her.

That's probably for the best then. If her kit is so reliant on the Runaan's interaction, it should be removed. If she needs buffs afterward, she could get them. This way she doesn't end up being reliant on building runaan's and it allows her to build other items without being gimped.

It'l also put more emphasis on using her bush interaction again. I rarely see players actually use this part of her kit.

Can't the same be said about Jinx? She needs runaan's because it provides insane AOE with rockets. Might as well remove the AOE on runaan's bolts for Jinx as well using this logic right?

That's very true. I would like to build other things on Jinx. I would love to try the shiv/rfc/warlords combo on Jinx, but losing out on Runaan's just hurts too much. I would like to be able to use other AS items.

Although something I would like to mention is intended strengths. Jinx having large AOE damage is an intended strength. She had the large AOE damage before runaan's was a main part of her build. What Runaan's does is it amplifies this strength, but it doesn't really change the nature of the strength. Before and after Runaan's, her shtick is still large aoe damage.

I don't believe Riot intended for caitlyn to be able to bypass her stacking mechanic using Runaan's. Runaan's pretty much turns a "strong auto every now and then" mechanic into a single target dps steroid in situations where caitlyn can hit multiple targets. It changes the nature of the mechanic. Instead of really amplifying the mechanic, it changes it. RFC fits more towards the original idea of the mechanic. It turns a single strong auto into...a single a strong auto.

Although I can see the argument where Jinx somewhat gains single target damage in the same way with the AOE stacking.

she's being nerfed

She's getting nerfed, albeit not with proposed changes I'm sure will actually affect her much from what was being proposed. The problem with Caitlyn right now is, she's an effective lane bully due to her range, and it affords her too much leeway in getting past her notorious mid-game slump. Her traps serve a dual purpose of enabling aggression for herself, while negating aggression for her opponents, with very limited counterplay involved. Her net lets her reposition quickly when needed, and Piltover Peacemaker gives her wave-clearing power.

It sounds really stupidly strong now, but in the past, it's where she had to be in order to stay relevant. Over time though, things have just shifted to give her a lot of power, with her peers getting nerfed, attack speed/crit itemization being buffed basically across the board, and the meta being focused around lane control for early drakes, deep vision in the enemy jungle, etc.

She's not OMG UNBEARABLE but it's fair that they're looking to trim down her strength a bit, after the last few patches have really boosted her.

As a cait main i agree she needs some slight nerfs. Not major nerfs as shes pretty close to balanced, but shes just a bit too strong.

Its too vague and outdated. Id like to see some fresh abd broader thoughts

Seems totally fine to me Kappa

Shes being gutted on pbe already, what else do you want?

I want a Rioters perspective on her state right now. As a Rioters perspective will most likely be without bias, they have solid facts, and where they think might be the right way to lead Caitlyn back to a completely healthy state.

She's lined up for nerfs in 7.11

She'll be losing a lot of her Late-game single target damage.

Still boils down to trap setting time.

They basically need to make traps a more rewarding-to-use skill than a spammable like it is. Maybe even base it on headshots, where she can get a trap every time she triggers her passive naturally. :|
