Make support more interesting: Remove sightstone. Vision= team effort.

Support mains hold your horses.

Now let me begin. Why is support so unpopular? Because the support is doing the jobs no one else wants to do. Need powerfull item actives? Support will build it. Need peel? Support will do it. Need vision? Support will do it.

So what if we removed one of those jobs to give supports a little more freedom in builds and gameplay? With sightstone and your support item, you are forced to give up 2 item space just to be a functioning member of your team (or you can combine those 2 slots into one via the sightstone upgrades and get an item with mediocre stats, but more build possibilities). But what if sightstone was removed? Of course it would imply some buffs to trinkets, but I think it would be worth and would make vision a team effort instead of having to send your support all accross the map to ward everywhere. There is a limit of 3 stealth wards per champion, and supports are the only one to actualy reach that limit. So here are a list of changes that could make up for sightstone removal:

  1. Add a space for control wards late game

  2. Trinkets have SLIGHTLY lower cooldown early game and can stack up to 3 times instead of 2 OR change the limit to 2 wards on the map per player but lower the cooldown a little more

Aaand thats it! If everyone just puts at least 1 ward and 1 control ward on the map, vision is already pretty great. And we don't have the problem of supports being the ward slaves anymore, everyone can help the team.

Why do people keep saying "Remove Sightstone"? Sightstone gives Supports the most vision flexibility. They can place vision (sightstone) while denying/clearing vision (red trinket).

Because it's one of the reason people don't like to play support. Being force to lose build flexibility while every single other role lets you build how you want. I wouldn't say to remove it if it was optional, but sightstone is mandatory because the trinkets can't keep up in vision and you need to lose an item slot solely for compensating for that. And if you don't your team go apeshit on you.

That's the life of a support, and I don't think it'll in any way fix the supports problem.

It's not the itemization that everyone hates, its the way that supports get less recognition then the Ahri who just 1v2'd without ulti up.

Sure, we get recognition. A lot more then people think, but it's just not desirable enough.

I like how people just accept that support have to do shits no one else want to do. Look at someone comin and sayin ''ya back in season -12329 supports had to buy 3833109 wards and no items and were level 1 at 39 minutes in!!!''

If it was only for recognition no one would play Jungle since it's one of the most hated roles and people usualy blame you when they lose but hey lots of people still play it.

They want it removed because with it in the game they are basically required to buy it. Basically every support will start with gold income and sightstone before they ever get anything else. Support is already supposed to be the job that functions on the least amount of money and then you add in that your first item or two is decided for you and it seems like you never are able to get the items you want.

DrCyanide1 votes

You get your sightstone your first back usually, and considering how useful it is that makes complaining about getting it seem like an ADC complaining about how they've got to get a BF Sword first back, or a mage complaining about getting Morellonomicon first item. Yeah, you've basically got to do it, but it's what you want to do to be effective at your job.

if anything the items we give give us TOO much flexibility, due to the nature of our jobs as the babysitter we need to basically have 12 item actives and 3k worth in shields and heals ready to dump on an ally at a moment's notice in order to do what our job has become in this meta. think of it this way sightstone gives a free 3 trinkets with no cooldown every time we go back. that's a lot of vision, and something that makes us LIKE our job, not the other way around. if you've ever played dota 2 you know just what it feels like to be the ward bitch with no items except a few potions by the time your teammates are completing their 6th and shouting at you to "WARD THIS BUSH AND THIS ONE AND THIS ONE" and you will be lucky to get a few cheap mini items that will still be mainly focused on topping up your teammates rather than boosting your own stats. so no, supports get a lot of love in this game.

You can't just compare supports being shit in another game/season to justify that they are worse than any other roles in the current patch.

AmetDeCrypt1 votes

you do know league used to be a dota mod? the supports then were exactly the same, we've come a long way from being the ward bitch and dota is an example of how things used to be. so no it's a perfect comparison.

L0ve Is Blue2 votes

Man like i give a shit about what league was or dota is or heroes of the storm or any fucking moba. It's about supports being less popular because it feels worse to play. Period.

AmetDeCrypt1 votes

cool. and sightstone doesn't have a goddam thing to do with that. as I say before it's an example of a huge quality of life change to make our jobs easier and not focus so much on spending what little money we have on vision. trinkets and removing bought stealth wards are another example. what you are arguing is the opposite of the reality of the game. the big "problem" with supports is it's not a popular playstyle, that of deffering kills and glory to others while keeping them safe at the cost of yourself.

The whole warding issue is kind of why supports are so great in Heroes. Everything you do can help an ally out, and you can do all sorts of stuff with people not in the support class, like medivh, who gets a bard portal, a protect (like stasis but you can still move and attack), a polymorph that spreads or an aoe stasis.

Now look in league: people yelling at you about how because you didn't build an item that gives you a bit of heath and vision, something everyone is supposed to help out with but no one actually does, and which game do you want to play support in?

Note that I play a lot of support.

AmetDeCrypt1 votes

have you ever said you could truly tank or do relevant damage as support lategame compared to your teammates? personally I like league but that's just because I tried playing dota and it made no sense how I'd lose about 300 hp for auto attacking (ranged) someone and backing off immediately before the minion aggro started. it was like bullshit invisible minion aggro or something.

midnight oil241 votes

Well as tahm and braum I can tank damage, and have you ever seen sona support? That thing can do insane damage. Plus, guys like brand and zyra support rose up because people wanted to do damage as support, much to my irritation whenever I play adc. Sorry if this is poorly spelled, I got eye drops erlier and can't really see well.

AmetDeCrypt1 votes

I'm not talking... about league of legends... yes you can do that in league, that's MY point. can you say the same for dota 2 supports.

midnight oil241 votes

Oh... Didn't realize that, sorry.

Actually, yes, I do feel that I can do that. Tyrande, for examle, has her starfall ability, which deals a ton of damage. I play diablo support. All sorts of stuff.

AmetDeCrypt1 votes

interesting. I'd like to hear your thoughts on my prior "invisible minion damage" I mentioned before as well as how you think dota manages to balance champions playable in less gold roles while not making them insane in roles that allow them gold like say tank karma spamming that ridiculous heal.

midnight oil241 votes

I don't play dota. I was referring to heroes. got confused again. Whoops. Sorry.

When I'm tired I can have a hard time reading.

AmetDeCrypt1 votes

HoN bychance? I haven't heard of anyone who plays that in quite a while.

midnight oil241 votes

Heroes of the storm.

What's HoN?

The solution isn't to remove it, it's to give it more functionality. They should come with MR, MS, or Tenacity in addition to the states they have now.

item 2045 on a mage with item 3512, item 3060, item 3092, and item 3363 is already a super great time.

midnight oil241 votes

Just curious: If they added more to what sightstone already does, people will just be yelling at you more to build it, right?

RookPusher1 votes

Sure, but the problem isn't building it. The problem is it's a slot lost. To resolve that issue, allow it to be built up to something the the options it currently prevents you from obtaining.

midnight oil241 votes

Fair point.

Immortal spax1 votes

vision it's already a team effort, in high elo people buy 3/4 controls per game, in low elo of course is totally another story, but the game its balanced around diamond.

build flexibility... item 3031 item 3165 item 3065 item 3814 item 3671 item 3086 geez i wonder what other items the other classes are ALWAYS required to build at some point

This might sound crazy but what we had to pay to upgrade our trinkets (but get rid of being to stack 2. One max). So the basic wards would be the same until you purchase an upgrade for let`s say 300-400 gold. That would give you 2-3 wards that refill at the base. Same price for the blue wards and upgraded sweeper and keep the lv.9 restriction.
