I've gone from <900 ELO in Season 1 to peaking in Diamond 1 last season. AMA about League!

ChickenWrap··8 votes·7,611 views

Hey everybody. My name is ChickenWrap, and I've been playing League of Legends for eight entire years. Throughout my time playing the game, I've played with the worst of the worst, and the best of the best (I've carried 2xLift!). Back in 2013, I was Gold, I ended the season in Plat 1 (earning +0 LP at 98/100 to Diamond was the worst feeling of my life), but I ended Season 2 in Silver! I made an AMA page to prove that lower elo players do know about League of Legends, and sometimes, yeah, they just get a bad hand dealt to them by the RNG gods, or maybe they're just doing one of two things that hold them back. It happens! Since then, I've ended every single season in Diamond elo.

You're not always down there because you're bad, or because you don't know things, and a lot of the time, players like me get told they don't know anything in Diamond either (by both low elo players and your high elo peers) simply because you disagree with someone else's opinion.

I want to try and help everyone I can to become the best they can be at the game. I want to help you get to where both you and I know you can be, so I'm here to answer any and all questions about both my personal League career as well as questions about improving upon yourself.

For those of you who were curious, this was the AMA thread:

How do you decide who to play exclusively in order to climb, especially when metas remove a playstyle that you are personally used to? (like last season I played mostly Sona, but now I'm able to to make Ornn and Sion support work even though I've personally not been too good with tanks in the past). Is it because what I'm playing is favored by the meta or is it because I'm finding things that I am actually better with?

I play what I enjoy. I always have, and I always will. I know I'm probably shooting myself in the foot by not abusing meta characters, but I firmly believe that if you have a select few champions that you truly enjoy, you can climb the ladder if you're good enough, too.

In Season 3, I played Kassadin because I loved him (still do), but then someone had to use him in professional and Kass was a permaban again. Luckily for me, I also adored AP Tristana, so I just switched to playing that (and my all-time favourite champion - Shaco) all the way up to Plat 1 97-ish LP before getting LP-gated so I couldn't enter Diamond. Then she got reworked, so now I play Shaco in virtually every role as well as Nunu and a few other champions for times when I get specifically one role or the other (Leona, Janna, Pyke, or Shaco for support, Teemo, Singed, Malphite, or Shaco for top, Talon, Kassadin, Veigar, Viktor, or Shaco for mid, Trist, Twitch, or Ezreal for ADC, and Eve, Nunu, Kha, Pyke, or (obviously) Shaco for Jungle.

That's not to say I play them all the time or that there aren't other champions I substitute them for in certain situations I'm also good with, but generally if you have a pool of a few champs for each role that you enjoy playing, you should play those champions instead of ones you think you can abuse It's better to know what you're doing and have that champ become really strong at some point than it is to try and learn a few new meta champions every patch unless you have that kind of skill. Personally, I can learn and master a champion over the course of a week or so, but that's just me and a lot of my friends don't have the ability to do so.

Also, Pantheon is an amazing low to high elo abuse champion. If you can get good with him.

Well I followed your philosophy and played what I enjoyed, which is Sona. Have to say, I understood what I had to do like second nature and everything worked out. Best part was, I had fun playing her again. I guess this is why she's my most played champ to this day.

Hey! Guy from season 2 here, I haven't reached diamond... and i was wondering what you motivated you to keep playing ranked?

I knew I was good enough, I had the motivation, and I wanted to be able to have some sort of draw for viewers when I was streaming (that still never took off because I just wasn't lucky. I guess comedy and skill can only get you so far without proper publicity).

What you think will happen with Nunu's rework?

I think it was said Nunu is having one.

As an avid Nunu main, I really hope they keep his ultimate and his snowball in check. I want it to still have a 1:1 AP ratio to allow for off-build AP Nunu but I understand they want him to be a guardian. I'd like if he had some form of gapcloser/consume hybrid ability somewhere and some way to boost the stats of his allies. Honestly, almost every part of Nunu's kit feels core to who he is as a champion even though they kind of work awkwardly together. I expect an entirely new W and for E to become a skillshot (gross), but outside of that, I'm hoping they double-down on his buf/debuff gameplay, but I'm doubtful because Riot has already gone on record stating they don't like "invisible power" like that.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

Then just make his debuff called something else, like "frostbite", like Ornn has his brittle which increases CC durations, where if frostbite is applied on an enemy they have reduced attack speed and are slowed, and give it a little symbol above their heads or whatever. Done, no longer "invisible power".

What tends to be the biggest things that people are doing wrong that holds them back?

Not taking objectives at the right times, not pushing at the right times, not grouping together, and not knowing how to stop a split-push are the big ones.

The two weeks right after the Skarner rework certainly come to mind for me. And Graves being top win rate in 4 positions for a month.

I don't know who I hate more, Release Xin Jayce when Armour Pen is strong AP Yi Season 3 Kassadin Old AP Nidalee Brand right now Lee Sin every time worlds gets close Orianna ever Syndra when she's strong Fizz Old Support Vel'Koz Current Vlad...

I hear a lot of people hated Old AP Tristana and that's reasonable but I was the only one who played her and I loved her to pieces and I'm upset she was removed.

There's a lot of champions that have or did piss me off to the ends of the earth over the years.

How do I win if my botlane is feeding? How do I beat zed? How do I win when my whole team is feeding? How do I carry if i get ksed by a 0/8 darius? Does anything that takes skill make the game easier or harder? Is there a way to climb out of low elo with feeders?

Split push, to all of those questions. Pick a split push top lane with TP or play a split pushing Jungler.

There are other ways to go about doing things, but the general-purpose answer is to just learn how to get good at split pushing.

Favourite Meta: Whenever tanks and bruisers aren't priority picks Least Favourite Meta: The reverse of that.

Preferably back before Shaco became a late-game champion that required gold to scale with no viable way of attaining said gold.

Yeah he's not bad. He's a really rude pick against a lot of top laners and is great at split pushing.

Haha, good joke.

Playing since 2 years (+/- 1 or 2 months dont know exactly).

Started to spam Rankeds this Season since the game became important to me.

Reached Diamond as ADC Main, peaked d2 once (even op gg mmr does not show why ever) And now... I legit hardstuck for like 4 months at Dia5-Dia4. And dont know what to do.

I watched videos, tried new roles. Watching streams, sadly hard to find good educational streams.

And ye... kinda frustrating to be honest, since I dont see my mistakes most of the time, I only see feeding players (like my last Cait game) and my problem is also, I remember those games better than games I've won.

Ah, I've had problems like this before. It's a lot better in these situations to focus on you and what you're doing wrong. You can't help fix your team mates if you think they're under-preforming. You can only improve yourself. Win lane harder, roam harder, carry harder, and don't rely on your team mates (big hypocrite right here because that's almost all I do.)

It could also be because Caitlyn and other Crit ADCs have been kind of bad lately. Also, if you lose a few games in a row, just take a break (again being a hypocrite), because it's better to come back with a clear head and the intent of winning than it is to keep going when you want to tell your team mates they're trash. This time it's about focusing on you and what you can do better, because unless you're playing in a Flex situation, who is really actually going to listen to what you have to say? Everyone thinks they're the best, and nobody really wants your advice.

What do I do when playing a teamfight champion and I see we are getting splitpushed? I know someone has to go but I can't go on my own (I can't 1vs1 the splitter and my team would probably loose a 4vs4 without me)

Ask a team mate to go, and if they don't then it's your job to stop them, especially if you're the one with TP. in this case it's about who can slow down the split pusher until help can arrive. They'll realize they can't win without you (one way or another) and hopefully they won't make the mistake again.

Alternatively, force a team fight then and there, win it, send two people back to stop the split, and have the others push or take an objective somewhere.
