[Suggestion] Updating Essence Reaver: Giving AD Casters and Assassins a new item path

ModThe Djinn··27 votes·2,148 views

So we all know Essence Reaver, while well intentioned, is a bit clunky in practice: it comes into its own rather late into the game, competes too closely with Blade of the Ruined King and/or The Bloodthirster for sustain + damage, and generally is too niche to be worth the gold you have to drop for it. There's simply always a more useful option.

What if we really mixed things up though?

Below is a suggestion for a mid-game item called Aether Blade, which transitions into a NEW Essence Reaver for the late-game. It's designed to give AD-based spell-casters the mana and damage they need to thrive in the mid-game (at the expense of the raw damage or great sustain they might be able to get elsewhere), while offering a competitive end-game item for those who rely on spell-casts: while the raw damage might not rival that of Infinity Edge or The Bloodthirster, this version of Essence Reaver grants a few appealing things: the ability to easily hit 40% Cooldown Reduction with just masteries and Boots of Lucidity, a hefty chunk of armor penetration so your abilities hit harder, and a great form of mana sustain to make sure you can keep up your harass from now until Doomsday.

Thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated: I've approximated the numbers, but I really need the community's input to decide if the stats are worth it (i.e. would you buy this on, say, Urgot, Lucian, Pantheon, Talon, Corki, etc.), or if the item is too aggressively costed (it's gold efficient without the passive or the armor penetration, mostly because it's an unusual item with niche appeal, and you have to give up reliable health sustain if you get it early).

Anyway, here are the items:

Aether Blade ***Build Path ***– Sapphire Crystal + Longsword + 490 gold (total cost: 1250 gold)

 +20 AD  +200 Mana  +10% Cooldown Reduction

***Unique Passive ***– Essence Thief: You regain 4% of physical damage you deal as mana (half for AoE abilities).

Essence Reaver Build Path – Aether Blade + Brutalizer + 613 gold (total cost: 3200 gold)

 +60 AD  +250 Mana  +20% Cooldown Reduction  +25 Armor Penetration

Unique Passive – Essence Thief: You regain 8% of physical damage you deal as mana (half for AoE abilities).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Comments? Criticism?

Would these items tempt you on a spell-heavy Marksman or AD Assassin? Why or why not? What could be improved?

Thanks in advance!

I like your new ER as well as the new halfway item.

IMHO: aether blade has great stats and shouldnt overpower or push any other mid tier items out of viability as it has a good target champ base. I am a bit concerned with the Reavers stats though. The 20% cdr just seems too high. I understand you are going for the 20 + 15 + 5 but 20% cdr on an item that provides good sustain as well as solid damage and armor pen just seems to much. I also feel that 25 flat armor pen is slightly too high as well.

still IMHO: 15% cdr and 20 armor pen. Im assuming these would be unique as well.

Not meaning to nitpick as I really like the concept. I would definitely get this on someone like jayce

He could easily solve both problems by giving Aetherblade 5% CDR and ER 15%. This way, Aetherblade gives you a round 10% CDR combined with masteries when you're still in early game, and rounds it up to 20% with masteries when you finish the whole item. You can then get Ionian boots for 35% and run some CDR runes for the last 5%.

Good idea, but this would put the gold efficency of both items down. It still put item 3153 out of the battle, tho, but not item 3072 .

I intentionally avoided tacking lifesteal onto the item because I didn't want it to end up competing for the same slot as The Bloodthirster or Blade of the Ruined King. It would have had to end up with lower sustain values than either of them, and having that slight bit of lifesteal would have meant that I couldn't power up the unique aspects of the item.

Still, that comment is a good one. If I hear enough input like that I might actually go back and redesign some things -- not to add lifesteal, but to see if I can create itemization for Marksman that doesn't make early lifesteal such a necessity.

My only other concern is that it might effect ADC balance too much. By providing an item with 20 less AD than BT/IE, a smooth build path without the pain of a BF sword, and 25 flat arpen, it may be too much of a nerf to IE rushing carries, or it might be just what they need.

It would certainly be great on lucian, ez, draven, talon, kha, and i would love to see it implemented ingame.

They look nice, i'm a little concerned over the lack of lifesteal though. Still, I FAR prefer this to the current reaver.

I agree with making it 15% CDR and docking it to 20 ArPen; however, definitely keep the build path, the ease of building aether blade makes it an early game item that doesnt scale quite as well into late which is perfect for Caster ADC champions like graves and ezreal and potentially even lucian who need to have strong lane impact but slightly less impact late game.

Dudermen2 votes

I laugh as you say that Graves and Lucian don't have late game impact...

Vellich0r2 votes

Did i ever say that? seriously look back through... done yet? because I very clearly said, and i quote, "Slightly less impact late game." Seems to absolutely contradict what you just said now doesn't it? Makes you feel kinda dumb for arguing against a statement i never made. It's OK though, one day you will learn to think before you make unintelligent remarks trying to contradict a statement that was never once made. have a nice day.

I'd enjoy it on MANTHEON and others like him. That's a lot of longswords though, making it a very easy build. You could (if you want) add a pickaxe instead of a brutalizer and add arpen on the final item. I'd use it though, a lot.

ModThe Djinn2 votes

The easy build was actually intentional, arandomyoungling. I figured that if it were a difficult build it would be passed over in the early game for more lane-friendly items like multiple Doran's Blades or Vampiric Scepter. The easy build was sort of my way of encouraging it as an early/mid game item instead of a last purchase on Marksman who like spells.

Might have definitely gone overboard on it though. It's possible it is too easy to build.

While it would probably work for ad-assasins, i feel like it lacks an place for ad-carrys. even on a caster-oriented adc, u want atleast a bit AS(usually trinity for me). U want an lifesteal item for sustain, and LW is to strong to not get. Since the good as-items always have crit, IE is also to effecktive to not take it. Last but not least, u often would want atleast one defensive item.

I think it would be a great item if ad-carrys and crit get reworked a bit, so no-crit builts can compete with crit builts on ranged ad-casters, or it should still give lifesteal(and evt spellvamp) so u might get it instead of BT.

I also think the scaling with missing mana from current ER is better for gamehealth, especially since ur version gives mana from spelldamage aswell. It would turn any ad-champ into a manaless champion. With a 2 - 8% based on missing mana, u could get to some reasonable mana once ur oom and will usually be able to use atleast one spell, but u would not be at nearly full mana 100% off the time, u would sometimes need to delay ur combo to regain mana with regen/AAs, makeing mana-gating still somewhat meaningfull for abillitys.

In that context i'd also prefer a item 1004 insead of the item 1027, makeing item 3508 a sustain-focused item opposed to item 3004 which gives u a huge manapool but rather negative sustain.

I also think u could take 10%cdr from the Aether Blade and give it 5 ad more, makeing the final item only 10%cdr. Atleast for ad-assasins(and if critless builts get viable also for caster-carrys), ur idea would work realy well together with item 3071,but currently u would sit at 30%cdr, which is a bit ankward as besides BC there is no realy viable 10%cdr item left for ad-casters.

Using 6 item slots: item 3508 item 3087 item 3031 item 3158 item 3035 item 3072 is a perfectly viable build if you're behind and need to build tons of damage. You get AD, LS, crit, AS, ArPen, CDR and a nice overheal shield.

Sire Hippington1 votes

it's a very situational build, and if u once get jumped on with burst or hard cc, ur gone. And if ur behind, getting to 6 items full rarly happens^^

cshakes1 votes

As an ADC, if you get jumped on with burst or hard CC, you're gone regardless of what you've built. :P If you have a Guardian Angel, you might survive if your team can manage to push the enemies back, but that rarely happens.

(In my opinion, all items should be situational. I don't really appreciate the fact that item 3031 is practically mandatory on most ADCs while item 3131 is a noob trap. I do realize that having all of the countless items in the game roughly equivalent is hard, but I hope Riot's balance team will investigate the issue.)

Sire Hippington1 votes

if u have an banshies, the crucial cc might get blocked or the burst mitigated enougth to survive, and with mercurial u can get out of the cc. Even A frozen mallet can help u survive with the 700 more hp, and afterwards grants superior kiteing.

I totally agree that it would be better if all items are somewhat situational and not mandatory like item 3031 . I also said in my first post that this ER would be great if IE+another crit item wouldn't be so mandatory for any adc, caster or not. But unless the dominance of crit get's adressed, this version of ER would probably be a very situational item for adc(still great for melee-ad-casters though)

Well there are ways of getting 10% cdr like 5%+5% from masteries and runes or blue buff/pot Or you could always just sit at 35% cdr

Well yeah CDR options for AD casters isn't all that great but then again it never has been

This would probably replace ghostblade on about half the things that currently build ghostblade

ModThe Djinn2 votes

That's sort of ideal, MontiR. Ghostblade is probably the closest comparable item, and if this is only better than it in SOME situations and not ALL situations it means I probably positioned it about right.

Essence Reaver does fine, and it works on plenty of champs. It's better to tweak what is now than to try to provide a completely different answer for AD's mana issues.

You new items would have a hard time fitting in. On Marksman you would be hard-pressed to fit it into their rigid builds, being forced to give up either LW or your defensive item. The number of AD casters just about extends from Jayce to the resident assassins Kha and Talon to Pantheon, and they all would appreciate an item similar to this, yet there could be complications with suddenly providing them another Armor Pen item that also makes spamming easier. You could also consider champs like Udyr, but he would better appreciate the original Lifesteal.

PatMcGroyn1 votes

That would be a really cool item! I think the problem with Essence Reaver currently is that AD casters who can benefit from it generally would just rather have twice as much life steal & the shield from Bloodthirster, over the mana sustain & CDR from Essence Reaver.

cshakes1 votes

I think that the problem is that current ER is an 80AD + 10%CDR item, where it was intended to be a mana sustain item. Replacing the Vamp Scepter with something with equivalent-ish stats but mana steal instead of lifesteal would probably help. In any case, I think that ER has to have either 80AD or tons of pen for ADCs to actually buy it.

Here are my attempts to remake ER's build path: Spirit Scythe v1 (Vamp Scepter equivalent) item 1036 +item 1027 OR item 1004 (total ~880g) 10 AD X mana / Y mana regen per 5 Unique passive - Reave: Restores 4% of damage dealt on autoattacks as mana

Essence Reaver v1 item 1038 + Spirit Scythe v1 + 770g (total 3200g) 80AD X+A mana / Y+B mana reen per 5 10% CDR Unique passive - Reave: Restores 8% of damage dealt on autoattacks as mana

Spirit Scythe v2 (Bilgewater Cutlass equivalent) item 1036 + item 3067 +160g (total 1400g) 20 AD 200 HP 10% CDR Unique passive - Reave: Restores 4% of damage dealt on autoattacks as mana

Essence Reaver v2 item 1038 + Spirit Scythe v2 + 250g (total 3200g) 80 AD 200 HP 10% CDR Unique passive - Reave: Restores 8% of damage dealt on autoattacks as mana

Though ER's main problem is probably that (according to my friendly local Plat ADC main) all ADCs have infinite mana. He thinks that the item is still good, though, since it gives 80AD and 10%CDR.

I like your basic concept of making the essence reaver more different from the other things, and i think adding amor pen to make it more unique than raw damage is also pretty cool, but i think your stats my be a bit much. Maybe like 10 armor pen.

Poshriel1 votes

I agree with the idea of this, maybe lower the cdr to 15. But someone mentioned that you could use masteries and runes plus boots of lucidity to get that 40% cdr. But I really don't think you need to max that out in the first place. 30-35% is plenty. I don't even normally max out on mages because I just think that awkward 5% worth of stats isn't so game changing that you absolutely have to have it.

Maybe on longer cd ults, because 5% of 90 seconds is a lot less than 5% of 120 seconds.

Zaikyo1 votes

I like the Idea for sure, although numbers may need tweaked. I'd love to play Jayce with something like this.

TheRainInSpain1 votes

I like this a lot. I found that the current Essence Reaver would simply too big of an early game purchase (where mana sustain is at its worst), but didn't warrant the need of a Tear->Manamune, especially on ADC's (like Sivir). I was interested in a Armor Pen build rather than a Crit build to crush tanks rather than blitzkrieg the back line (as an ADC, you typically don't engage the back line until the front line is dead), but I could never get enough ArPen to justify it over the standard IE+SS/PD core.

If this was in game, I'd definitely rush this after two Dorans with a final build of ER, Bork, Greaves, BC, LW, YMGB.

Knight Devout1 votes

I don't want to be stingy, but perhaps the final item, with 250 Mana, 20% cooldown reduction and 25 armor penetration is too much cost effective.

Have you made the calculations about how cost effective the item is? I did some basic math with AD, Mana and CDR and the item is 102,92% efficient without 25 arpen and without the UNIQUE passive. Which doesn't look really high, considering that item 3031 item 3072 are above 110%, but they just have ONE passive. For example, the Botrk is at 82% gold efficiency and still feels pretty strong.

But anyway, that might work: armor pen and cdr could be used as lever to tune the item if it feels too strong.

The biggest problem I see is that people could rush new Essence reaver and item 3158 to get 40% cooldown reduction really fast.
