East Coast and it's shit ping

I'm not going to even bother writing what i have to think about all the shit that riot has been feeding us for the past 2 FUCKING YEARS about east coast servers and their horrible ping. So here's a video that does it better than i ever could. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RQg0gKmins

Yet, they are on the west coast.

The NA sever is currently in lower California. If it does get moved it will get moved to somewhere in Oregon. Fucking Oregon. It's like riot is doing this on purpose. Oh wait they are.

Ever lagged so hard, your own server shut you out. My game crashed and the whole thing closed itself.

I'm from the west coast and I still think Riot is an absolute joke for not being able to fix this. I swear they don't employ anyone with a double digit IQ; and each staff member must agree to be hit upside the head with a shovel before their shift. Seems about right if you look at the companies productivity.

Hello I am Bird4 votes

The company is doing fine, can people please stop making hate rants like this? Like I get that Riot has been less than cooperative but at the same time is that a reason to say they have an IQ under 10 and must be hit upside the head with a shovel? People like you are why I hate this community.

While I really don't agree with comments like what you are speaking to there is only so much ignoring or ignorance you can take before you just get angry.

After this many years of them talking about or talking to the point of the servers their responses seem disingenuous at best and copy pasted PR at worst. Most of their responses are for nothing other than to placate people in hopes they will ignore the problem and go back to spending money on overpriced thresh hoodies in their new store or bundles of old skins that are the price they were released at but less quality than most new champions basic skins.

After a while you stop wanting to be spoon fed the crap end and you want to start seeing the work, and it doesn't help that it seems this year especially is working towards a worrying trend of more and more off time for them or at least off months where they do way less, like the near entire back end of 2014 starting with worlds. They managed to released the map for SR and nerf some champs then go back on vacation again.

2 Years? You are being too kind. People may have only started complaining on a large scale 2 years ago but this is a project that should have been done from the get-go. Back in Alpha/Beta. The fact that this wasn't on their radar until recently is actually kind of frightening.

I'm more talking about how long Riot has been bothering to publicly speak on the matter and less on how long it has been an issue. I've only been here since 2011 so I can only speak to that from personal experience but my issues (as someone on the east coast) have only gotten worse as far as ping and packet loss...also funny since my internet and computers have significantly improved since then but significantly gotten worse ONLY with this game.

I live with a constant 200 ping. This is because of my internet, and not because I live in the east coast. I live in the midwest. But sometimes, my ping will shoot up to 19000 ping. So while I get that I don't have personal experience with Riot neglecting something easily fixable, I still know how it feels to lag like you guys. It's bad, but in the end, manageable.

B7dEADtEPy5 votes

Yea it's pretty annoying. If I'm lucky I get 90 ping. It used to average at 160 but at least lately it doesn't go over 130 unless I'm having connection issues... in which case I get over 1000 ping. It's so annoying because I get really bad lag spikes quite often (around 20% of my games). I hope Riot does something, but they probably won't.

I average around 120 ping which is fine as long as no one else in my house is on the internet. I know that is my internet just being shitty but the fact still stands that we shouldn't have constant ping over on the east coast of over 100.

Oh hey, that's my video!

As much as I sound pissy in that video, I'm making this video because I give a shit about the game. It wouldn't make me happy if people left for another game because I want to play League, but Riot needs to fix their shit and stop pointing fingers like a team of Plastic V players.

PapaFizz1 votes

220 is playable but fucking terrible. I can barely dodge skillshots at 120 as is. Many times I KNOW I jammed 'F' right before the blitz hook even touched me but fuck all I still get pulled.

I guarantee you'd do better at 60ms, theirs literally no question. Once you get used to that you'll be fucking screaming when your ping jumps up to 100 or 200. Its like a mechanical Keyboard, you just can't look back.

The ping that east coast get and west coast gets is nowhere close. West coast gets anywhere between 20 and 50 ping based on their internet. East coast will get 50 ping if they have google fiber. Oh wait can't get that yet. East coast players get as low as 80ping if their internet is great.

I started a new account on the Oceania servers, I consistently get 200 ping - BUT no lag, no packet loss. I'm not sure what this says, but it is an amazing playing experience, plus they speak English. It does lead me to believe that there is something else going on than just the distance thing, I mean Central US to Oceania is a huge distance. Not lagging and no packet loss and not even one "attempting to reconnect" are the bigger issues - whatever that issue may be.

I can understand not wanting to move the servers from west coast, they don't want west coast complaining about raised ping as much as we are about it now. If put near the center of this country, they wouldn't have as bad a ping as we do now, but it would be noticable.

So can't we just get a server for East? Pretty please? Surely you made enough money off the east coast by now to justify keeping the populace of this side appeased yes?

No if they moved the current server to the east coast and it improved ping for everyone there then the amount of people complaining would look like an ant to the number of people currently complaining. The east coast in the US is one of, if not, the most dense part in the world that plays LoL. And still riot fixes EUW problems over NA's, the place where the game started...

I don't know why these threads keep popping up. Riot 100%, literally, just does not give a shit. They don't. Every other MOBA, MMO, hell, online game has an east coast, west coast, and usually midland server for NA. Everyone except Riot.

They just. Don't. Give. A. Flying. Fuck.

And they never will. At least, not until profits start falling.

Just bend over and take it up the ass East coast, or move to west coast. Riot will never actually give enough of a fuck to actually build a server base that rivals any game that takes it's competition seriously in any form as long as they're making millions a year. So stop trying. These threads are a waste of time.

Again, for the slow witted. Riot Does. Not. Give. A. Fuck. They make millions a year making everyone connect West Coast. They couldn't give a second shit about East Coast.

It won't be until East Coast players drop substantially, and we're talking millions that never log in again, that Riot MIGHT start to pay attention. And that's a very far fetched might.

Good luck, and accept being skill capped by shitty Riot servers. Because unless you move closer to California, you're fucked. Skill doesn't matter, latency does, and if you're on the east, you're nothing in the eyes of Riot.

Yes, if any or all pro players moved to, say NYC or Quebec and tried to rank, they too would be just as shitty as any other player. Kinda makes your whole LoL Pro series a farce, knowing it's a rigged game from the start. But god would it be hilarious for any of them to try to prove me wrong. They'd shut down their streams after a day of them getting fuckstomped by someone on the west coast simply from lag and no skill at all.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

I've made this point many times. But might as well collect more down-votes.

Skill trumps Latency. Latency does not cap skill. For the majority of players, 1/10 of a second isn't enough to have any realistic impact on a match. In a scenario where both you and your opponent are perfectly matched, latency is an advantage. That's why pros move as close to the servers as they can. However, the belief that lower ping trumps all (as your post implies) is blatantly inaccurate. If it were true, no east coats player would be above gold (assuming 50/50 split for simplicity).

This needs to get out there in the gaming press and cause a backlash for Riot. Not stay in Riot's echo chamber.

If it was just an issue of ping, I would agree. But when I see a teamfight happen one way but 2 seconds later I find out that I actually got Lissandra ulted at the beginning of the fight and died before it started, that's just not ok. The packet loss is hella real out here. You can even see it happen on league streams. Check out QT since he came back to the east coast and some of the random sh!t that happens in his games.

No our problem isn't that we can't play with 100ms ping. Our problem is that we can go to Latin America servers and get better ping. We can go to EUW and get better ping. We can fucking play runescape and get better ping. It's not the fact that we can't play with it. It's the fact that we shouldn't have it.

Onegarion2 votes

You are assuming a lot here. Personally I go to LAN and get around 50 ping compared to the 90-100 I normally get. Now going to EUW I get roughly the same and actually EUW is higher. Maybe where you live you get better, but not everyone is that way. Also east coast is more than just US, but Canada as well and they don't get the same ping that the East coast of USA gets. Also it has nothing to do with ping at all. its all about packet loss that east coast players get and the instability to the servers. If it was just ping alone there wouldn't be that much of a problem since there are quite a few high tier East coasters.

Drunkèn Master1 votes

I agree, ping is one thing, mine here in VA floats between 85-110, definitely playable. It's the packet loss, that result in huge lag spikes and dc's, that are the game breaker...

Blam Blam1 votes

If you can't play with ~100 ms ping, the problem is you, and only you. I play from SK, Canada and get ping ~100 ms and can play fine. Sure, i have noticed times when i think i shouldn't have died; so I realize that I simply need to chain my abilities quicker - but these times are far from game-breaking common. The majority of the time, a kill opportunity results from exploiting mistakes; from my experience, not many mistakes occur in "twitch" time where ms would break the opportunity.

I'ts not the ping, it's the packet loss and in most cases it shows your ping as being stable. When we mean packet-loss we mean the game pausing for 2-3 seconds consistently, (at critical moments), and only to un-pause after the action has happened and your moment to shine was taken away by the lack of connection from Riot's end.

Rito needs to and has been needing to fix their shit. Stop shoveling out fucking content we can't enjoy because of your shitty east-coast infrastructure that you continue to neglect!

EmmZeeAy1 votes

So many compelling threads about it, and yet, Riot replies to NONE of them. They state that "Riot is always listening. Myself and the rest of my team almost always NEVER track NA ping threads."

If they track our threads regarding this circumstance, and you meet DAILY, how about an update? We have been in the dark for more than 2 years. Vague answers aren't going to cut it any more. If you meet daily, and this issue has been prevalent for 2 years, you have meet probably somewhere between 500 and 700 times regarding this (made up numbers based on the reddit post in the video @4:40) issue, but yet have no solution? The players have come forth with a multitude of solutions and you guys just turn a blind eye and keep going on. As long as you guys receive money and revenue, why bother, amirite? A billion dollars? Nice. I have an idea, rather than give East Coast players an equal opportunity to play, let's move the servers up one state and say they are "stronger" when they raised the ping by about 50 for me. But I know this post is in vain, Riot doesn't care. They feed us lies and then go swim in their money and enormous egos.

Of course you're going to have that bad of ping. You're playing on EUW server in South Africa. Also we're not complaining about 100+ ping. We're complaining that riot hasn't been doing anything about all the packets drops and shit that are causing people to go and lag out of games. Also we get a constant 45 ping playing on Latin America servers but we don't since they don't support english there. Also the fact that i get better ping playing runescape. That's what we're complaining about.

Why does it matter who has it worse? It doesn't matter that ping of 200 is playable or that someone has a ping 100ms higher than someone else's already high ping. For a highly competitive live action game like LoL with skill shots, a ping of 100 or higher is simply too high. Period.

Really for a game of this scale ping should be ideally be under 50ms for everyone in each specific region. Last-mile technologies such as DSL can make that difficult to achieve, but with proper server placement and infrastructure (with good direct routes to all Tier-1's) it should be doable for the vast majority of players.
