Spirit Visage vs. Banshee's Veil

A friend and I were having a really, really long debate over which Spectre's Cowl item is better: item 3102 or item 3065. As a basic reminder, SV is 106% gold efficient, gives 50 less hp, the same magic resist, and the same health regen as BV, plus gives 10% CDR. With its passive, however, it actually gives 20% more health regen than BV plus 20% extra health from all incoming sources (except teammates). BV, on the other hand, is 96.73% gold efficient and will block the first ability used against you. Here's my problem with that: you don't get to choose which ability it is. If it was more like a QSS, then of course it'd be more useful, but as is you don't know what you're going to be hit with. It could literally be wasted on anything. It might be good in bronze or silver, maybe even low gold, but eventually everyone is gonna know to hit you with something before trying to use important spells against you.

For example, let's say you're going after a Syndra. What you need to block is her stun. What you'll most likely block is one of her slows. Admittedly that is one more than you'd block with SV, but she still has another and once you're stunned you're at her mercy. At that point you have to hope you get a heal from somewhere because you're not gonna flash away from her ult. And SV will help you get that much more out of the heal, plus if you have lifesteal you can fight her after she does her combo and is a sitting duck. Another example: Alistar combo, made easier because he can't mess up the timing and punt you away, and he just wanted to knock you up anyway.

Specifically for your front liners, BV's passive is super useless. You're in the front line. You're going to be walking around in front of your squishies getting hit by stuff in between the enemy's farming. You're going to get hit by something unless they have a full melee team in which case it doesn't really matter which of these you build, it should be a win. And when you are in the front line, health regen is an important stat, and SV will give you more of it.

The only real argument I've seen for BV over SV is that pros build it more often. Not the reasoning that pros have, just the fact that they build it. So why is it generally considered the better item (when your champ doesn't rely on incoming health)?

one is better than the other in certain situations (assuming the enemy team doesn't have enough magic damage to justify building both). if you have built in healing like Nasus ,DrMundo ,Trundle ,Aatrox , etc. then spirit visage is probably the better choice. if your team has someone who can heal others and/or someone using heal, SV is probably the better choice. if the enemy is incredibly combo reliant, BV is probably better.

Yeah, it really depends on the situation. So technically, the debate was not quite very viable in what you were trying to prove-take for example Nasus, Mundo and Olaf-would take Spirit visage for regeneration. Adc/Mid and possibly top laners would take Veil for champion specific effects including assassins like Zed to prevent CC from stopping them. Both items are highly situational.

perhaps mid and some tops, but adcs?. And BV doesn't block effects, it blocks abilities. Any ability. let's say you're caitlynn and zed tries to assassinate you. a good zed isn't going to just walk up and press r, a good zed will walk up, go through one rotation of his spells, then use his ult and go throught another rotation, meaning you just spent 2750 on blocking his shuriken. If you had a SV, you could try to lifesteal off of him or anything around you and also get extra off whatever heals you have.

I think its funny that you say banshee's veil is only useful at low level play because i seem to remember a 70 minute game involving complexity where the whole game revolved around whose banshee was or wasn't up. It was the game where one of the announcers swore at the end.

It really just comes down to whether or not you can really utilize that self-healing boost and the cdr.

Other than that Bveil has more hp, hp regen (the specter proc goes up to 45 hp/5 from 20 iirc), and also a spell shield which can ruin an assassins day.

There is no Spectre proc. Both items lose that when you upgrade, because the health regen is worth more and doesn't need to be proc'd.

Reasons for Spirit Visage:

  1. You're going to be staying in the fight for as long as possible
  2. You already have a method of sustain, be it lifesteal or health regen

Reasons for Banshee's Veil:

  1. You don't expect to eat many spells, but you need room to breathe in poke
  2. It counters spells that are practically essential for a combo (Think Ahri, LeBlanc, Morg, etc)

In general, I go with Spirit Visage for durable champs with a bit of sustain, and Banshee's Veil for everyone else.

Why not both?

If you don't benefit heavily from both the CDR as well as the increased health regen from spirit visage then you should go banshees imo.
