Your gonna confuse the new players who come on here. Yes supports need to build sightstone

One of the more important reasons to have one is so you can help maintain vision, while also using a sweeper.

Simple fact, if the enemy has a support with a SS and a sweeper, they will have more vision control than you, and when they sweep your teams wards, you will have even less.

This video touches on the basics of the concept.

find me some diamond support mains who dont get a sightstone.

The LDC2 votes

can you tell me do supports get sight stone when there playing against a evelyn or a shaco?

Knoyle5 votes

I don't even main support and I know you especially need a sightstone against such champions along with more pinks and a sweeper. This isn't Rocket Surgery.

Sevixys3 votes

Rocket Surgery

smiled.. a bit

Hay5eed1 votes

Wat? Sightstone doesn't do shit to an evelyn or a shaco. You're better off building items to counter their damage and grabbing pinks along the way

Crowe Stalker2 votes

Even then, you can still get a Sightstone in case someone roams bot.

Knoyle1 votes

Yeah, so lets ignore that Fizz Talon Leblanc Ekko Zed Malzahar Ahri Quinn (This is only a few. the list is huge.) That likes to roam. What could possibly happen, right?

I never build it. and I win most of my games.

grug4 votes

the logic behind not buying sightstone from what I see is that you either deal a shit ton of damage or tank a shit ton to justify not buying it. A lot of people don't do either so they should probably get one.

Nami in Bush3 votes

Who needs sightstone when you're 11-0-15 "Support" brand?

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

Brand: We'll be fine without vision Caitlyn. Things aflame glow. >:D

redfeenix1 votes

Lol that's pretty funny. Also would be funny if brands passive was : using skills burns plants.... Could be used to forest fire and remove bushes etc.

Vision is essential against certain champions like Zac/Fiddle/Kassadin, especially if the carrying person doesn't have mobility.

balbraaksel3 votes

This is how League of Legends works as a team game: The ADC and APC has as his responsibility to build in such a way that he can deal as much damage as possible to high priority targets. The bruiser has as responsibility to be as disruptive as possible and usually but not always assists the ADC in dealing damage by building a Black Cleaver. The tank has as responsibility to disrupt, defend and force the enemy to waste abilities on him The jungler has as responsibility as well to take baron/dragon/rift herald whenever he can and not give the enemy any of those away for free like showing up on top with dragon up and not knowing the enemy jungler's location. The support has as responsibility to protect anyone on the team and has to keep baron and dragon warded.

To keep baron/dragon warded a sightstone is essential.

Sevixys1 votes

to keep baron and dragon warded.

It's not only support's responsibility anymore. Back when green wards were buyable, it was so but nowadays - when yellow trinket is a thing - everyone must ward like there was nothing else to do.

Support needs sightstone to properly control ALL vision in the game, enemy wards included. Red trinket+sightstone is lyfe.

balbraaksel2 votes

But if nobody wards that then the support has to ward baron and dragon though. I personally prefer Sightstone + Farsight alteration so I can get even more vision though.

Hay5eed2 votes

There are all sorts of reasons why a support may not need to build a sightstone. Granted I would advise any beginner to get one anyways cause it's a really useful item BUT there are many reasons to not build a sightstone.

Dextix LT10 votes

No, there arent. You need wards. Period.

Hay5eed1 votes

Yeah you need wards. Guess what you get for free? Wards.

If you're lane is not roaming often then a single ward can keep you safe. If your adc is smart and knows "hey, my support just used his ward, so he can't place another one" then you can rotate out and always have at least one ward up. This is handy when you need to rush a certain item to counter a specific threat (like an item 3102 to counter an ahri mid, idk) and you can still invest in pink wards.

Dextix LT2 votes

No, your wards from your trinket is never enough. Early? Yeah, until you can get sightstone trinket wards are enough to keep a lane relatively secure. However support is not responsible only for his lane, he is responsible for objectives and wards that are needed on lane for deep ward ganks for example.

You need to rush sighstone, nothing else. Nothing else is as important as vision, which can win or lose a game on its own.

Crowe Stalker1 votes

Uh, Sightstone Rush isn't actually that great. Tier 2 Support Item into Sightstone is the most optimal rush, because the income will help you scale faster.

Hell, we live in a Season with item 2301 item 2303 item 2302 There really is no excuse for Supports NOT to get Sightstone anymore.

Hay5eed1 votes

I always do Tier 2 item then sightstone

Dextix LT2 votes

Its not a safe rush however. Such strategies are incredibly risky, as a jungler i have fucked up many bottoms because the support did not buy a sightstone.

Safety is more important than power in this case, because enemy ganks are dangerous. And deadly if wards are not in place.

Crowe Stalker1 votes

That's also a fair point, but I tend to end up backing when it's safer rather than when I'm sorry (I have the good fortune whenever I'm supporting of being the the side typically getting pushed, and when I'm not, me and the ADC can keep the river warded between trinkets and fall back when we can't.)

Hay5eed2 votes

"nothing else is as important as vision"

item 3340 item 2043 item 3649 item 3092

seriously most ganks can be prevented by a single ward, depending on who the jungler is. Most mid-laners don't have to ability to use unique ganks and will wonder down through river, which I always have warded with my trinket. If I feel the need for extra warding but not for a sight-stone I put down a pink. Once my adc gets his item 3363 we can usually get really good coverage. Frost queens claim is a great vision item cause it can be used offensively to slow enemies out of position or can be used to protect your lane after you scored a couple of kills or took a tower.

Am I saying that Sightstone is useless? No. But while Sightstone changes helped non tank supports reach into meta it did not solve the problem of "hey, I want a vision item so I have to sink gold into an item that gives me health...which I don't need"

If I am playing a tanky support (which I almost always am) I always get tier 2 gold income item and then sightstone.

Dextix LT1 votes

First of all, i didnt know you can still buy wards, what season are you playing in?

Secondly, 1 ward is not enough, even with those junglers who are bad at ganking. There are always 2 gank paths, and for some there are 3-4 gank paths. Lane ganks exist too.

Pink ward is unreliable as you put it once and it gets destroyed, which means that you just wasted gold to stop 1 gank, when sighstone with its wards can stop far more.

Trinket ward is not enough to cover for these possibilities.

Health is an universal stat, that is usefull for anyone, even assasins or supports. And so far i have seen only a few individuals rushing tier 2 gold item before sighstone. Why? Because not getting sighstone if you are not pushed, is an invitation for free kills.

And no, frost queen is a shit vision item. It has long cooldown, at the same time has a pretty high cost (To build all tiers). It also doesnt do shit against ganks, because how will you use the item if you dont know that the enemy is ganking in the first place?

Hay5eed1 votes

1 ward is enough. If you need more wards then you are simply not understanding when the jungler will gank. I dont just spam wards here and there I am careful about it. Is the jungler in top lane right now? Well then I am not going to place a ward in river brush cause those are seconds wasted.

Did jungle JUST leave top lane? Well thats another delay on that ward cause I'd rather not waste those few precious seconds.

Did bot lane suddenly disappear and there is no hint of the jungler. Guess where they are? I don't need a ward to know that they are at drake.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

There is no reason to not build a sightstone.

You might be able to argue "other people should build it if supp doesn't want to"

But Sightstone is OP, build it.

Hay5eed2 votes

If their jungler is not roaming at all or has gotten destroyed by our jungler, OR our lane is extremely fed then I am probably not rushing a sightstone, I am going to get other items to help our strength and then use trinkets and pinks to keep us safe

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Rushing sightstone is cool to not rush.

The moment your team starts roaming you are going to want a sightstone and you NEED a sightstone the moment you get to teir 2s.

Dextix LT11 votes

No, ALL supports need sighstone. Without exception. Vision is important.

Sevixys3 votes

Also, sightstone is a legit tank item after the price reductions.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Not disagreeing with you but what if the support uses the yellow trinket?

Tobias Brackner2 votes

Pay attention to the cooldowns of Yellow Trinket vs Sightstone

There is no competition.

The Last Ballad3 votes

You mean trinket that never lets you reach the ward limit and has 1min 30 second intervals between wards? That never cuts it for me.

Dextix LT2 votes

Not enough. Yellow trinket has less charges, lasts a lot less time and recharges slower.

A Basic Island4 votes

that's even worse. You should 100% be buying sightstone then immediately swapping for sweeper.

Yellow trinket is not and will NEVER Be a sight stone replacement. EVER

Mr Fidori2 votes

I love sightstone, and always buy it. But it's also true that a team would have just as much vision if the support didn't buy SS, but everyone used their trinkets and bought pinks.

redfeenix1 votes

Stop bullying people into buying shit YOU want to buy. This is an American game and players are free to play and enjoy the game how they want, not how YOU want.

Build however you want guys, ignore the trolls that flame you for not having this item or these runes.... As long as you have fun while you play it doesn't matter if you don't have the most optimal build. We're not in the LCS you don't have to copy their builds.

Just build whatever you want, you have right and freedom to do so ;)

Weasel Kensei7 votes

Well, this is also a team game. Imagine if players in a baseball game refused to take up the expected positions and just "play and enjoy the game how they want, not how YOU want." We have all the outfielders in right field, the shortstop deciding hes the "sub first baseman" and no one wants to play third base.

Well, honestly that team would lose that game almost certainly and they deserve to versus a team that fill the traditional roles and positions properly.

Now imagine if everyone in a league match behaved similarly, it may work every so often, but not the majority of the time. We have the META the way it is partly because it easily allows a group of strangers to arrive on the fields of justice with a better understanding of whats going to happen in the team dynamic. When someone takes it upon themselves to do something else, then it isnt very easy for the team to adjust, and this makes it easier for the enemy team to take advantage of any weaknesses or confusion caused by the bucking of the META.

In the case of not buying a sight stone on a support, those weaknesses are the likely-hood of the dragon being taken without any notice, or frequent ganks botlane that are successful, and even the enemy getting to roam your jungle late game without you knowing where they are setting up ambushes on your team.

redfeenix1 votes

Fuck the meta, I urge you try to be innovate and creative. Learning and Discovering are fun parts of league, and there are many champs/ builds to explore.

Try Double Jungle or Trilanes, or Double Mage bot! Dont live by anyone elses expectations - play however you want and whatever makes you happy.

SanKakU3 votes

I don't know man, when you type 'these runes' immediately I think of those players in draft mode in non-ranked games that don't have any runes on their rune pages, or their rune pages are just not optimal...if it's a difference of opinion on which optimal runes to use then I understand that...my definition of sub-optimal runes are any runes not level 3 and any non-quint runes that are the wrong color for their slot. Another example would be a Veigar with AD runes instead of penetration runes(you'd probably want magic penetration if you want to main mages but yeah that's not going to increase your physical damage like hybrid penetration). This other example will probably be due to having less than the desired number of rune pages.

But claiming that it's okay to not seek an optimal build is silly. I mean, some people will choose to not think for themselves and I dislike that because usually they just follow what someone else thinks and that someone else knows little more than they do. Calling such a build the most optimal is ridiculous IMO. Yeah, the truth is there is never a 'most optimal build' since we have 20 rune pages maximum and a lot of people don't even own 10. And maybe someone has a load of runes and rune pages, it doesn't mean they are loaded when it comes to champion selection options.

On top of lacking resources, the champion lineups are bound to be different every game which impacts the viability of build choices more than many players are willing to admit. That's why players usually just opt to keep buying champions instead of explore different options with the items and runes...they put too much value in the champs which could get rebalanced quickly compared to how fast they can buy them.
