Sonas current kit is really weird atm

It Is I Emoto··9 votes·1,707 views

Hello, this probably another "rant thread" about Sonas reworked kit, but I'm still wondering how Sona players need to play with her reworked kit. It feels just.. like a random composition of buffs (hah).

Her Q seems to be actually really good, giving a lich bane like effect on the next AA for her whole team, Though it's ratios seems to be really weird. The max bonus damage it does is 60 + 40 + 0.2 AP ratio (let's take in this case.. 100 AP) = 120 bonus damage on the next auto attack. Probably if Sonas whole team focuses on one target, it becomes really great, though that's only the case if Sona builds AP.

Her W is a totally mess. a 1.5 Shield ratio with a pretty weak at the moment and her Heal is currently extremly underpowered. It get easily outscaled by other supports. at max rank, her heal only heals about 165 hp, wich is outscaled by many other supports, as well Nami and Taric who can heal multiple targets. Her Shield duration is extremly short to absorb alot of damage and is only useful to shield a small amount of aoe burst damage but this is it. But in the first case, The heal is extremly weak, yet having an high mana cost for nothing in return. I'd suggest to rework it soon as possible, because the scaling heal for % missing hp is not strong, since it gets outscaled by almost every support.

Her E seems to be alright in my opinion, though positioning with it is still somewhat hard. A little tweak on it would be healthy for it.

Her ultimate is still fine in my opinion. Maybe the mana could take some tweaks in higher ranks.

I already posted some suggestions here, and other Sona players had also great ideas to fix her, and I think that we should been listened to too.

About her Q: What if we would reduce the base stats from it and add a new scaling to it: let it scale on allies ad and ap. Previously, Sona had to build at least some AP to give it a stronger feel, but if you let it scale on Sonas allies ratios, it would also allow Sona to build actually more defensive items too.

About her W Let's be honest, the idea of an scaling on missing health heal is not bad, but the ratios are really bad on it. So if we really wanna do change about it, let's remove the increase of the heal by missing hp in % and give it a flat heal. I had already posted this idea earlier this week, but how about instead of the heal, we give the shield the increase by missing hp in %? We can give it higher ratios and increase the shield duration to 2.5 and give it the passive ability that its duration and strenghts increases by 1% for 1% missing health. Shields are not permanent, and it would actually make the mana cost worth at earlier levels if you can do a bait with it.

About her E The ratios seem fine, but giving it a ignore unit collision buff would be great for easier positioning in lane and juking/escaping, as well making it easier for Sona to hit n run after she poked some of her lane opponents.

About her Ultimate It's already fine as it is, though making it's cost for each rank in it to 100 mp would be also a great buff. Though I'd prefer to say to remove it's passive to increase her auras passively, how about we make it work like syndras passive? that each of her Auras gets an additional effect/extra stats at max rank instead of crescendo rank?

You don't have to agree with me or those ideas, but you can't say that Sona is "OP" right now, because she's clearly not and depends alot on hitting her ult in teamfights.

Sincere.

downvoted for saying sonas personal damage should be reduced anymore after already being repeatedly molested 5 times

I never said that. It would be for balance changes to reduce the Q base stats what would be logical after all, since it'll scale on ad and ap at the same time. This would also apply on Sona. So let's calculate..

Her Current Q Stats at rank 1 are right now: 20 + (0.2 AP). A Sona with 10 ap would do 20 + 2 (ap) magic damage on her next auto attack. The one I have suggested will scale on AD and AP, wich means the base numbers without any scalings needs to be nerfed without being too overpowered.

I would take as example at rank 1 : 15 +(0.15 AD) + (0.15 AP). A Sona with 50 AD (at lvl 1) and 10 ap would do 15 + 7.5 (ad) + 1.5 (ap) = 23 magic damage on her next auto attack. At rank 2 (lvl 2 for Sona) with 10 ap, her normal Q would do 30 + 2 (ap) = 32 magic damage on her next auto attack. My suggested example (Sona lvl 2; base ad = 52, ap = 10,) would do 25 + 7.8 (ad) + 1.5 (ap) = 34.3 magic damage on her next auto attack.

Considering that Adcs will benefit alot of this scaling because of their high early game ad and Mages will benefit alot of it at late game, I thought it would be a strong buff for Sonas team and makes them more in the mood to cooperate with her to deal as team together alot of damage. I'm sorry for all this confusing stuff though ;_; (I hope I calculated right haha)

You say she relies on her teammates too much then go and suggest adding Q ratios based on allies' stats . _.

Buff her W missing health ratio back, and buff her powerchord ratio and I'm happy.

It Is I Emoto4 votes

but tell me, doesn't she? If her team focuses one target at the same time, she simply becomes really strong. If not then it's a completly waste. I think that it would be a healthy way to make it scale on allies ap/ad ratios so Sona doesn't need to buy that much ap to empower her allies.

About her W ratios, I'd say yeah, it got quite weak after the recent patch, I'd say it would be a good idea to revert them, but the shield is pretty much unnoticeable at times, so I'm wondering why it's not considered to buff it.

I think the shield is fine as it blocks some minion damage in trades which is good. Maybe extending the duration?

It Is I Emoto4 votes

But that sounds like that it becomes in later stages of the game extremly worthless if it's just designed to block some minion damage. I think it would be fair to increase the duration, after all it seems to be only designed to proc the Ardent censer passive :/

It still scales with ap, so it doesn't fall of that much. It's no Janna shield but Sona gets to shield a lot of people.

Pika3104 votes

Thresh's shield is better than Janna's shield, but still shields multiple people and still lasts almost as long. Matter-of-factly, every shield in the support class lasts ~4 seconds or more EXCEPT Sona. Considering Thresh's shield has a base health of 60, Sona's should be at LEAST 50 and needs its duration at LEAST doubled to 3 seconds. Riot is just blatantly prejudiced against Sona and want her to be useless.

And Thresh's W is on a 22 second cooldown instead of Sona's 10 second cooldown, as well as not healing

So no it shouldn't, do you have brain damage or are you just incapable of doing math?

Two people. How convenient that you choose to not mention Thresh can always shield himself. Two = multiple people. Which is exactly what I was referring to when I said it.

I think she needs some ap ratio/damage tweaks for her skills. I use her fairly well, but her Q was cut down by the remake and her staccato seems okay if I get all the damages in from my Q but seems kinda weak otherwise. And I totally agree with the heals and its mana cost. (I'd also love a change in the skill-cast range for her R. I do know how wide it's gonna be but it still misses sometimes.) Plus, she is so weak against champs like blitz, thresh and kinda leona. <<- I can't emphasize that enough

This. This I like.

Right now, Sona is an ARAM only champ for me. And because I played her in about 80% of my games in Season 3, that really hurts.

Let her W stay the minor (and it really, really is minor for the mana cost, scaling, and CD it currently has), but make it into a Sound Barrier like effect, which seems to be what they're going for with the shield aspect anyway. The soothing chord she plays would act as a literal buffer against attacks for just a moment. It could scale in any of several ways:

  • Her AP. It's a cop out (mostly because Riot refuses to build a utility scaling ratio into items).
  • Individual ally's % HP. Weak or non-existent at full health, stronger at less.
  • Lowest ally's % HP at initial cast. Gives her incentive to help the most at risk ally instead of sticking to the carry, makes the team feel good for working as a unit.
  • Average of all allies's % HP at initial cast. Still helps allies for sticking with a hurt teammate, but doesn't give as big of a boon because well, they're all together.
  • Just her level/Ult rank, because why bother changing stuff when Riot can keep forgetting her.

I can't agree with that, She heals much less than Nami and Taric at the same time and the aoe shield is worthless for now. Her Q might be alright, though in my opinion it seems like that Sona is forced to build ap, to make her Q, her W, and E more powerful. Even if Crescendos passive seems to do that already, it doesn't boost her heal, wich is lacking of power right now.

Though, Nami can heal three targets at the same time, Taric can heal himself and an ally with an much higher ratio, and that heal is increased if he's healing himself.

And that's I want to change, the most Support ap items are extremly weak, as well the new ardent censer. Lich bane might increase her Powerchords and pushing power, but this probably was the reason why she got nerfed in the first place, playing her heavily with alot of AP.

Sona can somewhat do that, but you forget that Sonas heal targets only low health targets, wich means it can't be controlled who she's healing. The aoe shield is only for 1.5 seconds, wich is pretty short. It can shield someone from an auto attack or some aoe damage if you're timing it right, but that means you have to time right, as well somehow tag your whole team at the same time.

she dies in 1-2 hits late game and if her poke is an issue just flash and 1-2 hit her and problem is solved

Sigh, you don't know how much I hate it that fearless isn't even answering to any of the Sona suggestion/rant threads, like that everything is okay. Since the main reason for her nerf was her high winrate, wich has nothing to do with her heal and poke, it just seems to be weird that champions get nerfed for their high winrate, after all champions with a high ban rate should be looked at, since players don't want to face those.

Everything is not okay. She's presenting to be stronger than she should be allowed to be, and trying to come up with any changes means pissing off the extremely vocal minority that's still against the Sona rework.

Any hesitation of action is simply caused by their caution with this group. Riot will never revert the rework and thus that group will never be happy no matter what they attempt.

Sona always heals 2 targets, herself and an ally, as well as shielding them and healing more based on missing HP

Nami needs to be right next to an enemy to heal both herself and her ADC so it bounces, and it loses effectiveness with each jump

And 1.5 seconds is plenty of time if you have any clue how to trade

But keep chanting your "UR ALL PROPAGANDA TURRISTS" every time you're proven wrong friendo

Oh and Taric is garbage idk why you even brought him up

And 1.5 seconds is plenty of time if you have any clue how to trade

Lol, this statement is an oxymoron, I don't need to respond to it.

Pika3103 votes

She doesn't need to, Nami's heal with zero bounces is still higher than Sona's combined heal. Here's the math for you: 65 > (30+30). That's assuming both Sona and the adc are injured. I'm not sure why nobody's pointed out yet that Sona is blatantly outclassed at least 2 to 1 by every heal in the game if either are healthy. Even Alistar's heal is better, it has higher base, lower CD with passive and MUCH lower mana cost.

Her [Q] has really good damage because it's easy harass. With allied follow-up, you can burst down people like nothing. Power Chord acts as an AA reset, too, so take advantage of it and put the hurt on them with Staccato. Her [W] let's her and allies walk away from trades and mitigate harass. It's what lets you survive indefinitely under turret. Diminuendo is a mini-Exhaust, and when placed correctly can make it very difficult for the enemy to succeed all-ins. Her [E] is a great reposition tool. Use it to quickly maneuver and dodge. Tempo makes it an effective escape or chase tool and is the only CC you have besides for your Ult. (and Diminuendo, but debatable) Her [R] is very easy to block or miss, be careful to not waste it and apply it to as many enemies as possible.

Trade Combo: [Q]+AA, [W] away, [E] if necessary. Try to let your ADC get in on the trade as often as possible. Avoid wasting Power Chord and use it according to the situation. Using [W] does not remove the [Q] buff. Peel Combo: [W] to get health, [Q]+AA to discourage them with damage, and [E]+AA to let your teammate run away with you. It is essential that you use Tempo on the most dangerous target (The one that can immobilize/kill your mate) at that moment and get/keep them out of range.

Sona shouldn't focus on AP (it helps, just don't build like an APC), and benefits more from utility. Build things like Mikael's and Ardent Censer. You need mana regen and especially CDR. MS is crazy useful, too, because of her playstyle. You're most powerful late-game, when every ally can benefit from your kit and your [R] has been leveled. Focus on out-trading the enemy during the laning phase. If your ADC is good enough, you can even win against kill-lanes, just keep in mind what you are and are not capable of.

Hope this helps. She certainly takes some getting used to.

As for the buffs; [Q] would be seriously hard to balance, I doubt it would get anywhere in development, let alone on Live. [W] is toxic, a heal that works like that is enough, but a shield? It's a Blitzcrank passive, but way worse. Then there's abuse cases I hope I don't have to go into detail about. [E] I wouldn't mind at all, it does get annoying having your speed boost become worthless after hitting a single creep. [R] pretty much already fulfills that. I wonder if we could get it to work, though, would be interesting.

any of the champions in the game are capable of laning mid and winning so that doesnt really mean much

ap sona is only capable of 100-0 on one target while being stupidly squishy someone like lux/ori/yasuo melts an entire team and brings far more to the table in team fights

[Q] What do you think is hard to balance on her Q? If I use the stats I've used from my example from my other comment, it would be 15/25/35/45/55 + (0.15 AD) + (0.15 AP). This would apply on each invidual person, so this means if Sona has some AP or not, it won't change how much it scales for her allies. And for Sona herself, the extra damage she gets from her Q is about 1~% higher than the live ones.

[W] Not sure what is toxic on her heal though. Considering that other supports can heal much greater amounts than Sonas pre-nerf and current heal? As well I said that they should remove the % scaling from it and put it on the shield instead, so the heal gets it's base values buffed. I suggested that the Shield duration and strenght get increased for each 1% missing hp, so this could mean that it becomes a great life saver if you use it at the right time, making it much more worth. Let's say we'll buff the duration of the standard shield to 2.5 seconds and it shields at rank 2, 50 hp. If she shields an ally with 50% health left, the shield is increased by 25, and the duration is increased to 3.75 seconds. The max amount of shielding time would be 5 seconds, wich don't outscale most supports shields.

[E] Yeah, kinda that's why I suggested it.

[R] I'd probably prefer it if it would be like that, it would give Sona players much more choice what to max first and allow them to scale really well into late game too. Though what if only one of her abiltiies would recieve that bonus? This would also limit Sona, though the passives need to be worth for them though.

Those were just suggestions, if you have any that you'd like to share, it's welcome here!

FantasySniper1 votes

The [Q] depends on how your teammates are building and in particular how much they've built, while you can build whatever and get away with it. It would likely either feel too weak or too strong with no in-between unless it was a minimal bonus on top of your AP. Plus, you'd probably have to reduce her AP scaling and AS builders would the bane on her existence. All-in-all, it's a new mechanic where the only comparable examples are MR and Armor scaling with shields. Everything else has been a flat bonus of AD or AP, not even in percentages. In theory it can work, but the result may not even be making any progress.

Ok, now the [W] is fine, so long as she doesn't have it on both her heal and shield. The duration buff (not the % increase) might be too much, but that needs to be tested. I really like the idea behind letting her shield become meatier.

"Culmination" would be the perfect term for the "climactic buffing" of her abilities. A stat boost on the effects of the spell, and maybe even a boost to the Power Chord. I'm really liking the idea.

I had the idea to maker her Q strong at early game for Adcs and at late game strong for Mages. And yeah, that's what I wanted to happen, since the current one is only stronger if Sona builds a more "risky" build. It would probably be extremly weak on tanks. Right now it feels like that Sona has to build any ap to be stronger, wich kinda frustrates me. Though it's also designed for Sonas who don't start with any ap, so it's ad ratio will kinda buff her next auto attack, wich would be 15 + 0.15 (from 50 base ad) = 22.5 magic damage, wich would be still nicely balanced.

About her W, I kinda forgot (or written it too weird?) to say that the W % scaling ratio on her heal should get removed and moved to the shield, since shields are not permanent, and Sona has to be in meele range to shield her allies, wich in my opinion is pretty fair to make it stronger. mostly the mana cost would be more logical as well, if you're using the shield at right time, it'll shield a pretty good amount of damage on low health targets.

Same! It would give Sona players probably a stronger feeling, though I'm worried about the "Culmination", Since should it be seeable wich spell Sona enhanced? (if she only can enhance one of her abilities) or make it work Like Syndras passive? It's an intresting thought.

I think it should work like Syndra's Transcendent. But if need be, to keep her power spikes similar, it can work like Kha's. Visibility of the upgrades would be hard to give, maybe if the tone changed in an obvious way or the spell visuals became more flashy.

that'd be great! Though would it be utility buffs? or a boost to the stats? Since Syndras passive has a bit of both. And should it also work on Crescendo? (since crescendo means "becmoing louder") It'd be fun to think about it, so I really hope that might considered and the small passive boosts from crescendo get removed so it can work like syndras passive c:

It's a great idea, and there many ways to go about it. Great thinking ;)

"reworked" Kit...it´s basically the same as before - a little weaker during laning but even more broken lvl 9+. She really would need a massive overhaul to get rid of most of the aura-stuff and make her a really engaging champion. Right now you can still just faceroll somewhere in the background and have an massive impact on the game, while Sonas that actually know what they do will win about any game that lasts longer than 20min.

Tarics, Sorakas and Cassiopeias that main said champ will ALSO win more than they lose. This has no say as to the actual strength of that champion, it only speaks of the player's experience on that champ and in that role. You're blatantly propagandizing a known fact to inaccurately make a completely unrelated point, but are inadvertently proving why win-rates are inherently flawed.

If a Sona main met a Nami main or a Thresh main, Janna, Morg, Leona, who is equally experienced on their own champion, Sona is suddenly at the disadvantage. She can no longer make up for weaker potential with experience as they are now on equal footing on that ground. The advantage then favors the stronger champion, which is currently never Sona.

no? the e alone wins most games if you have any idea of how to play the map. She´s just crossly overpowered once she gets a little AP. Just because you obviouslyt understand neither her kit nor the game doesn´t mean she´s balanced.
