Why are runes and masteries important?!

Okay, so I understand runes and masteries are cool cause free extra stats is always nice to have but when you climb up to higher divisions, people are always stressing about how important they are. They barely are worth any thing to me. Like seriously there is this rune that gives 0.28 attack damage! How is that going to help you? This is not only directed to runes and masteries but also things like item builds and buffs and stuff. I really think that blue or red buff dont do almost anything noticeable to me. Some of you reading this are thinking I am a noob at Lol (I kinda am -_-) but if someone could help me out figure out how the little numbers benefit you, that would be greatly aprecciated :). I really am just looking for some number crunching and stuff. Btw, im a bronze 4 who played for about 5 months.

Runes should be removed from the game (IP/RP refunded) and Riot should add a new IP sink to the game.

Or they should be entirely reworked.

Masteries are fine though.

Lol i think they should be buffed up some.

No, they shouldn't be removed. They should all be made completely free.

At lower Elos they don't particularly matter that much since it's much more about how good people are with their respective champions and can snowball off the skill difference, but at higher elos people larger known the ins and outs of their champions, so raw skill differences are much less significant.

At that point, tiny stat differences can be more significant as players actually have the skills to punish and take advantage of those small things, as even a few stat points can make the difference between an all in that gets you a kill, and an all in that leaves you with all your skills on cd and them with a sliver of health left when they kill you instead.

Alright. How do I decide what runes to buy? I try to look up and copy some pages but there are so many different ones. Do I make one per champ? Or one per role such as ad carry and bruiser etc.

The basic flat runes are what I always suggest to start with. Armor, magic resist, health, attack damage, and ability power all have runes that just give bonus stats, with no scaling or anything. These cover just about every champion in the game.

From there you can start experimenting with scaling runes, percent health/movement speed, penetration, or even gold income runes. The key is to find a combination that helps your unique playstyle.

Flat runes, however, are always a good baseline.

EDIT: Forgot to mention something important. Each rune color has different strengths. Red usually has stronger attack runes, blue is better for abilities, and yellow is best for defense.

For the flat runes only get attack damage reds, armor and health yellows, and ability power and magic resist blues.

Quintessence runes should just match whatever a given rune page is for. You should be able to judge what is needed for them once you have those other runes.

A lot of runes are pretty much useless. A lot of other runes, however, can give you an edge on your opponent. That edge can be what separates a tough laning phase from an easy, snowballing victory.

Flat AD runes give .95 attack damage per rune, for a total of 8.55 attack damage if you have all 9. That's almost an additional longsword you can start with at level 1. Who doesn't want to start with a free longsword? That is the edge some of these runes and masteries can give to you.

As a side note make sure you're only getting Tier 3 runes. Tier 1 and 2 are completely useless.

Thankyou I will be sure to only get Tier 3 runes

That rune isn't going to help you much, but it's a bad rune. Your marks alone give you almost as much AD as a long sword would give you, your glyphs and seals give similar amounts to your hp, armor, and/or MR, and then your quints give you another boost to whatever you want on top of that. That's probably like an 800 gold lead over someone not using runes and a champion that has spent their 800 gold appropriately on stats that help them is way more threatening than one who bought a pair of sapphires because they don't know what they're doing.

And that's only runes.

Wow. I never thought about like that! 800 gold lead is like being fed with 4 kills!
