What if, Rabadon had LESS base AP but a higher % Coeffecient

Thus making it much stronger as a 2nd or 3rd item, but slightly weaker as a rush item. Slightly reducing the overwhelming burst of mages in the early game but improving their burst for the mid and especially late game. Helping them scale better.

Something like +100 AP +40% AP

With 0 AP and buying Rabadon Old - 156 New 140

With 100 AP Old - 286 New - 280

With 200 AP Old - 416 New - 420

etc

Mages are already ridiculously cost efficient, and you suggest making them more. Get the fuck out.

Cost Efficiency... People really do not understand this term

See to determine if an item is "Cost Efficient" you find out the base value of the items and compare it to their completed version.

A "Cost Efficient" item only means that it is more important to complete the item than it is to buy several different parts.

Also, we ASSUME we should use the cheapest item to determine a base value for Cost Efficiency, for all we know Riot uses a different internal value and none of the Mage items are excessively cost efficient.

or maybe they are, in compensation for Mages having some of the lowest base stats in the game...

Either way, the argument is really not relevant to this potential suggestion. However, I thank you for your response.

Mid Sona would be pleased.

Mid Sona would be pleased.

She would still be a little weaker initially but would get stronger than her current by her 2nd or 3rd item

Not sure. A risky change due to some super burst mages but also a healthy buff to some mages like Veigar. In fact it is a really good buff for Veigar. Do it.

It sounds more interesting than the current Rabbadon.

Rabadon's Deathcap is already a mediocre first item. Assuming you have 45AP (Double Doran's and AP Quints) and Archmage (5%), you get ~43AP extra AP from the passive (~840g worth). That's 163AP for 3300g.

Deathfire's Grasp. For most of S4, it had been considered the strongest start for champions who didn't need Chalice. The active alone is stronger than 43AP, and you even get some CDR! 120AP / 10% CDR / Active Nuke + Damage Amp. 3100g.

**Morellonomicon + Large Rod ** completely blows wrecks every other options. Tons of AP, CDR and MP5, with a nicer build path all around. 160AP / 20% / 100% Base Mana Regen 2100+1600 = 3700g.

No need to buff an item that everyone is building but nobody is rushing.

Mage power isn't the problem, tank power isn't the problem.

Considering a normal flat 450 AP, which is the reason most AP builds bump to 600ish numbers after Rabadon's modifier, you're going to get a difference of about +20-30 AP late-game. Most magi full burst rotations have a total scaling ratio in the range of 240-300% of AP, so that's 48-90 more pre-resistance damage late-game.

...why do mages need this again?
