PLEASE DISABLE NEW CHAMPS IN RANKED

Cerbearus··251 votes·9,746 views

I know many of us have been asking for this for years. I am tired of losing a ban for the week after every champ release. If I don't, I know 100% that someone is going to pick the new champ, who they have MAYBE PLAYED ONCE and ruin the game, whether it be on my team or the other. They are going to go 0/7 in lane almost every time simply because they have no idea how the champ works.

I agree, mainly cause I got a huge lead against a Jhin.

I think they should take Smites idea and require a certain mastery level to use them in ranked. Even if it is only level 1 mastery, at least your team knows you have played that champ before

Nononononononono. I have multiple accounts and I don't want to have to grind each and every one of them to play ranked like that. I already grinded them all for the masteries and champs. Plus, when you play with a known group of folks it's nice to be able to pull out that secret pick they didn't know you played because you practiced it in secret on an alt, so your op.gg, lolnexus, lolking, or whatever you feel like using doesn't show that champ.

Plus there's the fact that mastery doesn't even mean you know how to play the champ. I got lvl 5 mastery on Teemo but still lose like 80% of the matches I play with him cause I'm bad at kiting.

All for one champion debut game option. With only the new champion for free play.

10 people wanting to play Jhin, all get their way.

Magearna10 votes

Honestly, this is a REALLY good idea. Every champ debut, 1 For All: [Insert New Champ] should be a featured game mode. Riot, hire this man!

I also know how to fix Rengar.

I would bring back Vi to the top lane.

I am a better presidential candidate than Donald Trump.

Oh, no. this won't happen, i won't let it..

Then we wouldn't be able to completely OBLITERATE New champ newbs, in normals. Why take the fun away?

Lol have you actually looked at what champs people play?

50% of people are playing champs they have maybe played 5 times.

Just because it's new means nothing.

Mechanics of the champ haven't been figured out yet. I can guarantee that I would do better with a champ I have seen many times and heard a lot about, than with a champ where my only exposure was a champion spotlight.

Players have their own play styles, strengths, and weaknesses. I can guarantee to you that I will perform better on Jhin than I would on Tahm Kench, a champion that is a must-pick/ban in the pro scenes and a insta-ban in solo queue. I will perform better on Jhin than I would on Eve, a cancer champion for an entire year that also made appearances in the pro scenes. I would perform better on Jhin than I would on Vayne, one of the most well-known and used champion in the history of league.

Why? Because I'm typically bad at the champions I've mentioned and decent at champions like Jhin. You don't need to see a champion to understand its play style:

Passive: Cait's passive Q: Ryze's bouncing thing with a different damage calculation W: Lucian's Q with CC E: Teemo's shrooms with less damage and AOE effect R: Xerath's ult but with a straight line skill shot twist

How to play Jhin:

  1. Harass with every 4th hit.
  2. Use W in combo with Support Harass to proc CC
  3. Place flower (e) things in gank entrances and bushes, or use to zone if pushing
  4. R units out of position/too far from your position, or if you are dying and want to dish out your last remaining damages.

Of course, a new player wouldn't be completely proficient and might have to warm up, but Jhin seems like a really easy champion to play. *I've never played him before.

From a financial standpoint though, this gives people even less of an incentive to pay the inflated release IP prices, so I doubt Riot will ever do it.

Maybe they'd have more players willing to buy skins and champs if ranked didn't feel so shitty every few months when a new champ comes out and has to soak bans.

They could raise it 1k and i still wouldnt spend rp on new champs. There is nothing elae to spend ip on once you have runes and champs anyways.

My problem isn't the fact they pick said new champion for ranked ... it's the fact they do so without practicing the champion first which is disrespectful to your team. But I also understand their pain, of not being able to play said champion in Normal Draft because either:

A. New champion is banned B. Someone will pick said new champion before you do C. Someone dodges when you pick said new champion

This is why Team Builder was amazing. Sure it'll take awhile to find a lobby since everyone and their mom is trying out the new champion, but it worked. Longest wait time is usually 10 minutes, but you play the game for 30-45 min anyways so I feel it's worth the wait. Sadly without Team Builder, people won't get to play their champion so they'll resort to Ranked where people are unlikely to pick said champion, since, well ... people want to win and not screw around.

yea - i'm pretty sure this isn't the reason. I'm pretty sure people who play new champions in ranked don't play normals. They see ranked as the normal queue and play whatever they feel like. What's the worst that can happen? They lose a game? I don't think i'll ever encounter a person who says, "It's so hard to get the champion I want in normals - let's try it in ranked."

LoveSparkle6 votes

I would love if Riot disabled new champs in LCS (3 weeks) for as long as the general population in ranked. But I am convinced they give no cares about solo queue. So much so it doesn't exist.

Chezera5 votes

This isn't fair to those who spent time on the PBE to test out the champion and want to play it in ranks when it gets released.

CarbOMG14 votes

Basically you just want an advantage over other players because you are on the PBE ?

KarKzz2 votes

No, he think because he played a few customs games on the PBE, that he can play him in ranked.

The Ginger Ninga4 votes

The problem lies in the fact that people have no idea how to play when behind, which you probably will be if you play a champ for the first time in ranked, and then they tend to just feed their ass off.

Just stay calm and farm. Did you die? Well it is a good thing Jihn is ranged so you can still farm safely-ish. Pick up kills with your range, assist with the utility you bring. Stay back and land W´s on feeling foes. Use E to protect your other carries. Use your ult when you are safe and no enemy is MIA. Don´t play him in ranked for the first time.

See? Easy things to remember.

Reynard the ƒox4 votes

I'm honestly pretty good at Jhin tho. 3-0 so far in ranked.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

Im curious, what would you say his weaknesses are for opposing champion picks, and which allied champs give him the ability to be strong? Because I don't want to waste a ban, but I also want to be able to beat him.

Magearna2 votes

Redmercy has a really informative youtube video up. You can watch it if you'd like, I know it definitely helped me understand Jhin more :)

I will, thanks :)

He seems weak at actual tower destruction(comparitively), because you can't crit towers, he gains no attack speed outside natural growth, AND stops to reload every 4 shots. A trist can destroy a tower in seconds, it takes him quite some time compared to most adcs.

also seems exremely vulnerable to flanking, his kit naturally focuses the player's attention forward.

Ult, W, are his main sniping offense and are easily bodyblocked, so any half decent tank should severely reduce his kill power, forcing him to fight with his atrocious attack speed.

Looks to have very strong laning and siege, so the real question is whether or not he's better than cait: IMO, more fun to play but not quite as good at the end of the day.

At Least I Ward2 votes

He is extremely weak to hard engages, i was Morgana support with a Jhin (ranked) vs a Leona & Lucian. When leona went in i spelshielded her stun but after that she caught Jhin with the edge of her ult and he melted in under 1 second

I feel like new champs should be disabled in ranked for similar reasons as to why competitive matches are played without the most recent champion(s) (and indeed, often not even the most recent patches).

It's rarely a level playing field. They either have PBE experience (but teammates/opponents don't) so it can be unfair one way or another, or there might be bugs that haven't had a chance to be discovered (PBE is decent for catching things, but nothing compares to live), or they pretty much necessarily don't have the experience with the champ to use it effectively. (Yes, people are dumb and try champs for the first time in ranked even when the champ isn't new, but at least in that context they could at least have experience playing against the champ and have a sense for what can be done.)

You should require certain mastery points to play champs in Ranked, much like Smites mastery system. it works like this (or at least it did when i played in Season 1, start of Season 2)

Gods have mastery levels going to 10. You need X amount of Gods at mastery level 1 in order to even queue for Leagues(ranked matches)..

Then, if you meet those requirements, you cannot play gods IN LEAGUES unless you have the god you're selecting at Mastery level 1. This system ensures you can play the god you're choosing (at least at a rudimentary level, the amount of games it takes for mastery level 1 in smite is enough to make you understand, Nemesis'((shes my main, hence the bias)) for example and play her on a rudimentary level.

So not only do you require basic knowledge of X amount of gods(i think its 12 Gods needed, although it might have been 16) you also require that if you want to play certain gods(in the case of my example, new gods) you MUST practice with them in normal games and acquire God Mastery points and achieve rank 1.

What my point is, this system could be beneficial to League, because it certainly alleviates a lot of new character lock ins and "oh X is broken I'll just choose him even though I've NEVER play him" from champ select.

001100013 votes

They could make the champ available for ranked with the price reduction to 6300. :)

Stephenizgod3 votes

I don't think they should be disabled, but there should be some restrictions.

Something like: for the first week of their release you need to have played X amount of games getting at least a B+ with them before being able to take them into Ranked.

Could also add something like: the higher your rank, the less games you need to play.

Aír3 votes

The thing is, Riot has been doing this in the pro scene for years. Whenever a new champion is out, the pros play the next couple weeks with that champion not even being allowed to play. I don't understand why it would be so hard to disable this champion in ranked when they already do not allow it to happen in high levels

For a year? We've been asking this ever since I started in season 2 lol. Riot doesnt care. Otherwise they would either do something about it or address the issue.

Even a day or two would be a good start. :|

Nunya Bezwacks2 votes

they need to take a tip from smite and disable them from ranked until the next champion's release

CleverSloth2 votes

100% agree. Not because people pick it, but because no new champion is ever released unless they are stupidly OP, then after 3 months rito decides, oh they actually are doing 40% more damage on average than their similar counterparts, and do have 70% win ratio... maybe we should nerf them.

Junsui Aoi3 votes

Bard. You're forgetting Bard. And Azir. Some of the lowest release win rates. Granted, now Bard is freaking overbuffed, but apparently we can't have everything we want.

Defy Phoenix2 votes

Completely agree, new champs shouldn't be allowed in ranked for up to a week after their release, be it because they are OP from being released, or just cheesey wins/losses cause no one knows how to play against the champ. It's completely stupid to have someone on your team just go, yup i'm gonna play him, haven't played him before but he sure does fit this team comp...... TOTAL BS.

Eric Senpai2 votes

Meh, I like seeing people play new champions in my ranked games. It makes everything whacky and breaks routine.

Uiraya2 votes

So far he's been good for my LP the two times I've seen him on the enemy team (not that you see much of him...).

Can't wait for the inevitable overbuff and then domination.

Meanwhile, champion mastery level four MINIMUM should absolutely be required to play a champ in ranked. Absolutely. 100% necessary.

Best Valor NA2 votes

They do this (kind of) for pro league. Which i agree should be done for ranked.

KillerKell2 votes

Actually... what about this idea.

To play a Champion in Bronze, you need Mastery I.

To play a Champion in Silver, you need to be Mastery II.

To play a Champion in Gold, you need to be Mastery III.

To play a Champion in Platinum, you need a Mastery IV.

To play a Champion in Diamond, you need a Mastery V.

You can't move to the next Level without 16 Champions (the requirement for Ranked) with a proper Mastery.

Elewd1 votes

i dislike the scaling required mastery for higher tiers, you SHOULD need mastery 1 with champions before you can pick them but needing mastery 4/5 just to play in plat/diamond is ridiculous.

Your Next Kill1 votes

But what if someone is really good at the new champ and can easily win lane because your enemies don't know how to play against them?

I agree it's annoying to have idiots pick the new champ and ruin the game, but I don't think it's a big enough issue to disable them completely. An increased amount of bans would fix this problem though

LatetotheRace3 votes

Irrelevant, if these people are good now, they can wait a week at the very least to play a new champion. (They would theoretically still be good after that time right?)

AninLegions7771 votes

Lool. Man, I don't know about you but I've seen people play pretty well with new champs. So give it a rest already and let people do what they want. If you are against a bad player using a new champ, free LP. If the bad player is on your team, well ff@20 like a wuss OR suck it up and try to carry.

StigtriX1 votes

We are talking about ranked, so letting your team suffer for you inexperience and ingorance is quite rude, if you ask me...
