Copying their level-up = loot box approach won't work for league because matches are significantly longer so the player needs to feel rewarded for their 40 minute matches in the here and now.

Grinding doesn't feel as bad when it's a long series of short games i can stop at any time. it does feel bad when it's a short series of long games that I have to commit big chunks of time to

Exactly. I mean, before every new moba had to explain why it was worth playing over League/Dota and introduce some gimmick/feature to be at least somewhat popular, albeit still niche.

Now we are in a situation where League is trying its hardest to be like HotS. So, if I want shorter games with lots of glitter and lootboxes, why don't just play HotS instead? Now League has to explain why it is better than HotS. Like, WTF?

Playing Overwatch, I 100% agree with your assessment. These games go about 10-12 for a "long" match and its generally a lot more fun and enjoyable as its six on six.

The problem with these runes and masteries? They are basically just masteries. Problem is, you lose any advantages you had due to a well organized rune/mastery page. What about hybrid champs who benefit from AP and AD? Only one aspect gets "adaptive damage" instead. Lifesteal to start? Nope, if you die you die. Run out of mana? Too bad, if you aren't AP you can't restore mana or have that lousy 1.25% regen every five seconds.

I'd be fine if they had seven slots to add final touches like 1% lifesteal, 1% spellvamp, 2% attack speed, 1 lethality or 1 magic pen, etc - I liked to start with 5% cdr and 5% lifesteal on any non-AP champ but hey, screw what I want because change for no reason is good!

I'd rather LOL not go down the loot box route to begin with. Getting IP and champs was fine before without it.

True. Also.... Overwatch doesnt require you to buy all the Champs/Heroes to play them. As League does... Old Players get punished as well we shouldve gotten 30 Capsules for our past 30 levels.. got them denied. And New Players have to play 150+ Games maybe even more to ever unlock every desired champ. I remember I always wanted to have every champ which I someday achieved besides newly released once. But now if you start at this game... And all you get for your games is XP which can end up in 1-4 shitty champion shards or just even 1 like I got today which was luckily 950BE but still also I wouldve loved to get some KeyShards... i have tons of chests.. no keys... Feels Bad Man Being in a game of average 40+mins getting only some XP out of it.. nothing else... This isnt what I liked about LOL. I mainly kept playing cuz I wanted to master a champ. Or buy myself a new one when i was a new player.. now this will be frustrating for them I imagine a lot will stop in the process. It feels like riot is tricking us into a Luck System no one wants. I wouldnt mind if i got atleast 30-50 BE for my games. All I want is a secondary Reward to my games. Also im leaving out how expensive the Mastery System got if you wanna upgrade to 7... you can say bye bye to your BE and that just for an Emote to show off? EH.... Not worth it in my opinion. I like the rune Patch here just dont like the Reward and BE System

Is the problem that League games are too long for the type of reward given, or for the amount of reward given? Riot could increase the amount of essence given from level up chests to make each level up feel worth while, though I'm not sure how much that would end up being.

Doesnt work when trying to copy HOTS either because you get loot boxes when you level up a champ which doesnt cap. Would basically be like getting a capsule when you go from Mastery 0 to Mastery 1 on a champ and doesnt stop at M7

Significantly reduced drops in this LoL system without any real thought

The reason it works for overwatch is because all the characters are free and there aren't many characters. Also skins are easier to acquire in overwatch. It has very little to do with game time. The system just does not fit at all for league.

  • Overwatch has all of the Champions - Heroes (whatever they are called) unlocked. Unlike League.
  • Overwatch gives you freely depending on luck fully unlocked skins and stuff.

It's not completely fair to compare on game with another. But Riot seems to have been following certain trends over the years. Shorter games, as part of the increasing number of new fast paced MOBAs, huge snowball (a la DOTA 2), and now Loot boxes that are locked behind a leveling wall with no other means of getting them. What's next? Paid expansion packs and DLCs?

It also works for Overwatch because all content that actually affects the game (IE Heroes/Champions) is unlocked for free for all players at all levels. The lootboxes, while arguably just as grind-y, are purely cosmetic; I never have to worry about if I'm going to get another Mercy token instead of that Reaper token so I can play Reaper for the first time, only if I'm going to get a skin I want. League is trying to apply the lootbox system to their champions too, and at 140+ champions, that's an obvious attempt to make their game pay-to-play.

IMO something that'd help this is just make First Win a direct BE drop instead of it being an EXP drop

That or give 5/10 per loss/win like HotS then have your lv up be the big drop, if I have to win 10 games to level up having 100 essence guaranteed before the 800-1300 drop would help it feel consistent

Its still worse than IP due to the level scaling no matter how you frame it though

how was 100 ip a reward? you couldn't buy a champ with 100 ip.

rewards are things you can purchase and use, and you get them at about the same rate, probably faster.
