The Outrage at the Rune Refund Rates

Subdue··4 votes·720 views

The outrage at the rune refund rates is not about the people outraged /losing/ something. It is about other players /gaining/ something that the outraged people already had.

The system is being /replaced/ with a new one that is freely accessible. It is the equivalent of Riot making all runes free for anyone who doesn't have them.

Last I checked, when Blizzard made Starcraft 1 free to play, they didn't send me a refund for what I paid for it, and I'm fine with that, because I didn't lose something just because other people gained something.

When Arenanet made Guildwars 2 Free to play, they didn't send me a refund for what I paid for it, and again I'm fine with that, because I didn't lose something just because other people gained something.

Yet somehow, despite Riot making a move that undoubtedly already hits their profitability for the good of the community, especially new players, as a whole, we have a whole bunch of selfish, self-entitled schmucks whining about not being compensated enough for the free currency that the received just for playing the game.

You lot are such a disappointment.

Edit: Adding some examples to illustrate my point.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ARGUMENT

yeah i used the runes for 5 years and? if they become FREE FOR FCKING EVERYONE then i'm losing what i paid for before why is it so hard to understand

{quoted}

The problem isn't that we are getting free stuff, it's that we are getting less "free stuff" then that of newer players. Since they get a full refund while the likes of use that started playing since the beginning of league will not get a full refund partly because "well you guys have used the runes for such a long time so we wont be refunding it entirely". What's even more annoying is that old players will have the same amount of ip refunded for a mark rune worth 820 as a rune that would be worth 410 while the new players will actually get the full amount back 820 and 410. I want it to be equal for both parts. If they don't want some people to get a full refund because they have been playing for a longer time then the new players should get the same treatment or vice versa.

I am fully supportive of runes being free and available for everyone. I have been supportive of this idea for years now. On that note, you've completely missed the target.

I just don't see why people who were warned of the changes finally coming should receive a 100% refund for rune purchases after they were warned about the change, whereas everyone who wasn't warned about any upcoming changes gets a flat rate tiny fraction of what they spent as a refund. They're refunding the exact same items to different people for different amounts based on when they purchased it. That's where the outrage is.

First of all, they have no obligation to refund anything in the first place, because again, those players aren't /losing/ anything. But that said, since they are going to provide refunds, it only makes sense that the refund be based on how long you've had the runes, since that determines how much utility you've gotten from it. Really, the 'fairest' way to distribute the refund would be a percentage value based on time owned. IE, anything bought in the current season would be refunded at the highest rate, while anything bought in season 1 would be refunded at the lowest rate. But can you imagine the complaining that would happen then? "QQ Riot hates its veterans!!!"

Edit: And by the way, I say that's the fairest despite the fact that I'm a season 1 player myself and would likely receive a smaller refund as a result of such a thing.

That's like saying if a bank closes your savings account with 6 years worth of savings in it, but giving you a brand new account with more features in it with only 20% of the funds you had put in it is completely fair, as you're not /losing/ anything, because you will still have an account with them, but the guy who created an account with them last year has the same new account features like you do, but with their full value that they put inside of it.

No... that's not the same at all. The purpose of your savings account is to save money. That is the utility that it provides. Closing your account and opening one with less money is failing the saving's account's purpose. The purpose of your runes is to customize your in-game experience, which the replacement will do as well.

Edit: If all Riot did was give all the runes to everyone, would you be complaining?

A savings account is a place that you can put your currency. Runes were a place that we could put our currency. Granted you're able to withdraw from a savings account, and are unable to withdraw from runes, it's still a place to put currency when nothing else is available for purchase. Adjusting that place and giving you less than what you put into it defeats the purpose for both scenarios.

If all they did was give runes to everyone (oh wait, they already did), I wouldn't be complaining. The inequality in the refund amounts is what I'm complaining about. Even by your scaling logic for refund prices based on a decreasing value over time method, that would at least make more sense than a flat rate for every T3 rune before this specified date, and a full refund for everyone rune after this specified date.

Do you think t-shirts are "a place to put your currency?" How about shoes? Makeup? If you don't even understand the difference between goods and currency, I think we need to move on to an analogy that you do understand.

So, if everyone has all the runes, some without paying for any of them, you don't mind, and don't mind not getting any refund at all?

Are silver/gold coins "a place to put your currency?" How about collectors editions for games still sealed in their original packaging? Collectible cards? Perhaps even comic books still in their original packaging? You're comparing runes to goods that wear down and get replaced over time. I'm comparing them to goods that are relatively constant and may potentially increase in value over time. We're both comparing runes to real life goods, but you're comparing them to perishable goods, whereas I'm comparing them to goods that maintained their condition over the years. If you don't even understand the difference between various types of goods and currency, I think we need to move on to an analogy that even you too can understand.

T2 runes were made available for a sing IP each. I remember collecting full T2 pages at their full price before eventually working my way up to T3 runes. I don't remember getting any refund for it. Did I complain? No. I applauded them for their effort to bring a better sense of balance to this game. This was the first step towards this update. Now they made T3 runes available for 10 IP. Do you see 100 posts of outrage about T3 runes being cheap for people to purchase now? No. Why not? They're still usable for the next few months... Honestly, I don't mind. However, they offered a refund, that was their choice. It was also their choice to say "fuck you" to everyone who purchased runes before their specified date, giving them a flat rate meager compensation, whereas people who purchased runes in the last year were guaranteed a full refund. That's where the outrage is. If there was absolutely no refund, or a balanced refund, I'd give absolutely zero fucks like I have before.

Lol, I'm going to highlight the key in all of that:

And now the first line in my original post:

{quoted}

The outrage at the rune refund rates is not about the people outraged /losing/ something. It is about other players /gaining/ something that the outraged people already had.

You are basically agreeing with me. Your outrage isn't that you lost something. your outrage is that someone else gained something that you didn't. Thank you for proving my point.

Edit: Also, with regards to all your perishable goods nonsense, take a look at all of your examples. What do they have in common that makes them investments and that separates them from runes? I'll give you a hint:

{quoted}

you're able to withdraw from a savings account, and are unable to withdraw from runes,

Really? I don't think so.

Personally, I'm a bit disappointed because runes were something that was supposed to be permanent, just like champions.

I think I should be getting more than 100 BE for a normal rune and 300 BE for a Quint, specially because I bought most of them when they were 4x times more expensive than now, about 2 seasons ago (they cutted their cost by half, twice, I don't remember exactly when), so those who used the runes for longer also payed more for them.

I just think I should be getting more, it has nothing to do with the other players like you stated, I will, wether if they increase the reward or not, still playing the game because I enjoy playing it and despite this I'm still excited about the new season.

If the system wasn't being replaced, and instead, Riot was simply giving all the Runes to everyone who didn't have them already, would you be complaining?

Rafatinoni1 votes

Personally, I wouldn't, but that's a different scenario. In that case, I was probably willing to spend that IP on those runes anyway, and they probably would never make them free without a warning at least, if every rune costed 100000 IP, I wouldn't spend IP on them.

In this case, I'm losing something I spent IP on that was supposed to be permanent, but is going to be removed. Also, I'm not complaining, I'm just a bit disappointed.

Anyway, I think most of those people who are complaining about this refund system feel they are losing something themselves, they don't compare it to those who are receiving the full refund, that's why I think your main point in this post doesn't apply to this refund system.

Riot doesnt really profit from the rune system anyway, considering the only way to buy them was with in-game points versus credits

DrCyanide1 votes

They've mentioned they indirectly profited from the Rune system before. People would spend all their IP on Runes, want a champion, then buy RP to get said champion.

Riot profits from champion purchases using RP. Champions can also be purchased with IP. Therefore, if people have huge amounts of IP, that cuts into Riot's profits as people will not purchase champions with RP.
