An idea to make Sona a little more interesting to play

Hi guys. As someone who's played a little sona in the past and has read how people don't like how simple her kit is, I had a thought on how to make her better.

  • Passive: mostly stays the same, but the effect you get from it is based on her W at the time.
  • Q: keeps the poke, loses the aura
  • W: Sona's auras go here. Once she gets a point in this skill it is always on and toggles between two forms. The first applies continuous healing that scales on missing health to allies and an AS and MS slow to enemies inside of it. The second aura gives allies a damage buff and MS bonus and enemies lose a bit of armor and MR inside of it. This is what keeps sona, sona and gives a little help to her carries.
  • E: This becomes a skill shot that charms and damages whatever it hits. This adds a little more CC to her kit and thematically, lets her music draw targets in in a way that is less seduction and more beauty.
  • R: Keep it the same.

For once, a Sona post that isnt "she's overpowered" "Shes' a brainless champ" etc etc.

Overall, i think switching it like this could be interesting. have the W be a Toggle, (to put it in laymans terms) between the two aura's.

i like the idea of giving sona a charm. its an incredibly interesting mechanic, and the only people who have access to it are a Sadist and.. whatever peopel call ahri now adays.

honestly, the 'offensive' aura thing isnt that.. good. if people are close enough to be in the circle, they're 80% of the time, targetting and deleting sona.

As a Sona main myself, I see a lot more problem that this rework would create.

The toggled W relies on the passive definition of an Aura, Which Riot couldn't support to a degree which it was actually noticeable. (That I feel would be taking a step backwards.) And having her healing on a passive like that means it has no mana gate.

And the Charm, simply would eat up too much of Sona's power budget. Giving her a Second CC tool would limit enemies offensive options against her. (Charm anyone who jumps after her.) Combined with Her ultimate could give her ridiculous ability to keep the enemy stunlocked. That's not particularly appropriate for a non tank character.

Compared to a tank, it'd be easier to blow her up before the stunlock happened. Anyways, it seemed like an interesting way to add a little more skill to sona's kit.

BTW, Sona's had some form of aura for as long as I've been playing. I know riot wouldn't love something like this, but with blizzard being able to pull it off in overwatch with Lucio, maybe it's time to take a second look at them in this one case.

Eh, there's two problems here:

  1. Invisible power. Auras are... kind of boring, to be honest. A permanent aura isn't really health for gameplay, and that's why items such as item 3105 was changed in the past.

  2. There's a reason Sona doesn't have hard cc outside of her ultimate. Changing her E to a charm would be a significant boost, and severely strain her power budget. Cuts would have to be made elsewhere to accommodate.

Two problems, two rebuttals:

  1. Considering she's music based, it's harder not to have some sort of aura effect on her than it is to have one.
  2. Perhaps but that's where the skill shot, which she is lacking based on the complaints I've read, comes in. Rhythm games are dead and probably wouldn't work with moba anyways. If people want more than mana-management and positioning on her, there aren't that many options besides skill shots.

I think the problem is people want her to be something that she isn't.

She is first and foremost an enchanter, so her first job should be to bolster her teammates, not catch or disable her opponents. Yet she gets a lot of flack for that simply because A) there's not mush skill expression in buffing your allies, and B) There's not much inherent counterplay to those abilities. But both of those problems arn't exactly unique to Sona.

I also believe that her fantasy is more tied to her position as an enchanter, than people are willing to admit. That is to say, creating a different mechanic that serves a different function, wouldn't be Sona, even if it would serve the music fantasy. She's suppose to bard, coordinating her teammates with her tunes, not acting as a siren by luring in her opponents. And while a Siren might be an interesting champion concept, it should be a different champion entirely.

She has no speed up? That sounds horrible.

She does, I mentioned a MS bonus as part of the toggle on her W.
