Katarina Rework Concept, From the P.O.V. of a Katarina Main

For anyone who doesn't know - Katarina is receiving some changes in the near future (my guess, preseason) that are more or less pretty big. More information can be found Here. TL;DR: passive, q , e are getting changed. W is going to be an entirely new ability. And R is staying virtually the same. Also, no more ward hops.

Note: This is not a crying post, and it goes without saying, all these changes are non-official and would most definitely require tuning. I will try my damnedest to not be biased.

So, as mentioned in the title, I am a Katarina main. Through and through. I've suffered all the insults a Kat main could suffer. From being a no skill op champ from the enemy team, so being a cc'less useless champ from my team, I've heard it all. I've played well over combined total of 3.5k games over the last few years, counting normals. I love the champion, and I'll continue to love her through what the rework will bring.

TL;DR: All forms except physical, I am a Kat main.

So based off of what the recent roster update said for her, I thought of a few things Riot might implement on her. And if not, well maybe they can take from a Kat main's ideas. So, without further adieu..

Passive - Voracity: When Katarina scores a takedown[kill, or assist] on a target she recently[3 seconds] damaged, all abilities with a remaining cooldown of a second or higher, have their cooldowns reduced to one second.

Ah, the passive that makes Katarina Katarina. Riot mentioned this creates a very feast or famine type of game play for Katarina, and is unfair in situations where she is ahead and useless in situations where shes not. I propose this change because it gives players to react and think "oh shit she just got a reset, I have a second before she can blink on me and shred me to pieces". She'll have a passive on her new W that will help her with this from behind.

Q - Bouncing Blades: Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6 seconds - Range: 675 Active: Katarina throws a dagger doing 80/110/140/170/200 (+60% AP) magic damage to the first target, and then bouncing to the nearest 4 targets, dealing the same damage to non-champions, and dealing 80% damage to champions. The first champion hit is marked. Hitting the mark with an auto attack or ability will consume it, doing bonus damage equal to 20/35/50/65/80 (+40% AP) and reducing shunpo's cooldown by 80%.

With the partial reset on E, it gives Katarina more reason to trade in lane, instead of just cs with Q and hope you get some free harass. The bouncing damage reduction on champions even further encourages this.

W - Killer Instincts(Yes, I did that.): Cooldown: 13/11/9/7/5 seconds - Range: Self Passive: Katarina deals 1.25% extra damage, per 1% missing HP, up to 50/55/60/65/70% Active: Katarina gains 20% increased movement speed that decays over 2/2.5/3/3.5/4 seconds. The bonus is increased by up to 90% if running towards low targets. (90% life = 25%. 50% life = 60%. 10% life = 90%) Her next ability is enhanced. Enhancements vary on which abilities are used.

Bouncing Blades - Deals 20/25/30/35/40% bonus damage on initial hit, and proc'ing a mark will make the target take 12/14/16/18/20% more damage from your team for 3 seconds. Shunpo - Katarina will deal shunpo's damage to all nearby targets and grant a 40/50/60/70/80% move speed boost for 1.5 seconds. (Like her current w, but she doesnt have to hit something for the ms) Death Lotus - Katarina will throw daggers at double speed for the first second of the ultimate.

Giving Katarina a meaningful utility spell, with all the right tools to choose from will seperate good Kat's from bad Kat's, and each variation of this spell has it's uses. Q, extra burst and helps you and your team take down a target fast. E, bonus mobility and a little bit of extra AoE. R, is most definitely to help with teamfights and deal a burst of AoE damage, like within a stun timer or something. Base damage will be ofc be adjusted.

E - Shunpo: Cooldown: 11 seconds at all ranks - Range: 700 Active: Katarina blinks to a champion, minion, or neutral monster. (Rip ward hops) If the target is an enemy, she will deal 40/75/110/145/180 (40% AP) (60% Bonus AD) magic damage to it.

Nothing really to see here other than a cooldown change, due to previous changes and damage changes due to the fact you'll probably max W second.

R - Death Lotus: Cooldown: 90/60/30 - Range: 600 Passive: Death Lotus' cooldown can only be reduced by 15 seconds per instance of Voracity. Death lotus' cooldown cannot be affected by cooldown reduction from items, runes, masteries or buffs. Active: Katarina beings to channel for 2.5, throwing daggers at nearby champions every .25 seconds, dealing 35/50/65 (+ 25% AP) (+ 37.5% Bonus AD). Total possible damage to one target (Without e enhance) 350/500/650 (250% AP) (375% bonus AD).

Again, no real changes here other than minor base damage change and cooldown mechanic.

Although they mentioned no real big changes to ult, I did think of an interesting mechanic where she stored a dagger every 5 seconds, voracity would give her 3 daggers, and she could ult to throw daggers, and it could have like an 8 second cooldown or something. But yeah.

This was my interpretation of a potential Katarina rework. <3 If anyone cares, I'm gonna be making a scenario or two with these numbers/changes in the comments.

P.S. Thank you for reading! Riot, don't destroy my baby. </3

Tbh those numbers are super high and the W giving damage increase on top of that......looks like a massive buff across the board.

give Q an AD ratio, and I'll take it

but it sounds like Riot's rework is going to allow for resets on E, like maybe something similar to Master Yi's Q, and that sounds cooler

Make the mark detonation do bonus damage = to a pecentage of enemy max hp (or missing hp since assassin things). Would help with the tank problem she has issues with. Also should give her a better grievous wounds since anyone who can heal other characters at rapid succession basically renders her ults heal reduction useless considering it only reduces self heal. There's virtually no champs that do that in mid lane that are played anymore that don't build it later and have it a part of their starting kit. Other than Swain whos mainly played top lane (if at all), Cho with passive which is minimal, or Kayle who hardly ever sees much play at all lately.

A quick side note on the swain matchup is that it doesn't matter if you ult Swain. If he can write his own name odds are the grievous wounds aren't going to stop his healing enough to make much of a difference. I've ulted a Swain at level 9 with 100 AP and him with 10% hp just for him to completely heal through it with ult. If you can't make greivous wounds hurt other healing sources at least make it stronger on the single targets you use it against.

Would help with the tank problem she has issues with.

She's supposed to have issues with tanks.

considering it only reduces self heal.

That was reverted.

i think shes gonna get the ryze treatment. except they already said ult also stays the same.

but she will probably have some situational combos in her kit, based off her mark on her q. (this is a personal guess)

which makes me think shes gonna be able to do things like mark an enemy with her q, and if she triggers the mark with shunpo, it resets.

here is a list of things they confirmed:

  • they want to make her a lot higher skillcap champion
  • shes going to be overall more mobile
  • shunpo will lose its damage reduction
  • she will still blink around, so they probably keep shunpo otherwise mostly as it is
  • her assassinations are more telegraphed (but not too much)
  • her ult will probably not change at all
  • ward jumps will get removed
  • her w is probably going to change entirely
  • her q will also receive larger changes

she will still mostly focus around resets, and be a fast paced champion, but with largely increased skillcap. the combo system they did for ryze would accomplish exactly that.

I don't understand why you would give Shunpo an AD ratio. If it resets her autoattack, sure.

Also, Death Lotus doesn't help her AD at all. I'd just rather you scrap her AD ratios. They don't do much for her anyway.
