Why did Riot feel the need to remove vision control from the game?
Ever since the patch where they removed Stealth wards, I've found it fundamentally difficult to actually get an advantage in mid lane, since I'm always concerned about being ganked from the fog of war. In seasons past, vision control has always been a core part of playing League; Knowledge of where the enemy was and could be moving to was key to mounting an advantage either in lane or the jungle. Since the removal of what was effectively a basic ward, I've noticed a discouraging tendency of mid and top laners getting camped and dumped on with ease. Sometimes, an enemy laner will roam to another lane, and no one will notice anything until it's too late.
• "You have to put wards in strategic positions now!" That's fine. I'm all for having a strategic quality to the game. Unfortunately, the most "strategic" positions are ones where pink wards, which are always visible, will be seen immediately. Trying to abate this by putting them in more out-of-the-way positions will end up with you having either paltry vision of a place you actually want to see, or clear vision of a place you couldn't care less about.
•"You have a trinket, you know." Yeah, I get a stealth ward once every two minutes, and it lasts for one minute. It's not nearly the amount of vision coverage a person needs in order to feel comfortable with going a bit more ham to get a proper advantageous foothold in lane.
•"Pink wards are cheaper now. Just buy those." I do! When I have the money for them, as I did with Stealth Wards, I pick a few up. The only problem with this is that you can place only one at a time. Like before, it's just not enough vision coverage.
•"If you're getting ganked/if someone's missing, just play passively." That's not really a ticket to success, though. It's fine in the short term, but if there's the omnipresent worry of getting ganked, or if an enemy laner is roaming constantly, you'll quickly find yourself short on experience and gold.
I like League. I do. It's at a state now, sadly, that it's difficult to play solo. I know Riot wants to encourage playing with friends as well as a team effort to win games, but that isn't always going to work out. Not everyone will want to work together in every game. You could get a jungler that just AFK farms for 20 minutes to the detriment of their laners, or you could get someone in mid or top that never roams, ever, even when their enemy is roaming constantly. Wanting teamwork is well and good, but when that fails, I'd like to be able to make sure I know I'm doing my very best, and to do that, I need to have vision. If a person's being forced into playing what is effectively a solo game, then Riot should make strides to accommodate those players.
