So what is new Irelia's fighting style now? Ability based or Auto Attack based?
Reading her kit, she no longer deals true damage anymore, but her new passive grants her on-hit magic damage and attack speed, as long as she stacks it. Her Q still applies on-hit effects as well. These attributes make her sound more of an auto attack based champion, as the old Irelia was, but something about her kit tells me otherwise.
First, her abilities are all ranged now, and thematically that makes sense as she is a telekinetic blade user. Most champions who have ranged abilities but auto-attack in melee form are assassins or ability-oriented divers, and, as we know, they don't prioritize attack speed and on-hit effect items like
, which were viable with Irelia's old kit, but rather greater amounts of AD and cooldown reduction.
Second, because she has so many ranged abilities, it would be strange to also give her old strong 1v1 potential in melee range. Old Irelia could 1v1 most champions in mid-game, and her strength came from her ability to easily land a 2 second stun, and maintain consistent damage with attack speed items as she was not as cooldown reliant as melee caster based champs like
(most melee duelists are auto attack reliant like

, with some exceptions like
). Because all her abilities are ranged (as opposed to old Irelia having only 2 ranged abilities), I am guessing Riot would have to compensate her melee dueling potential by making her more reliant on her ranged abilities rather than on her consistent sustained damage, hence, prioritizing cooldown reduction over attack speed. I do think, however,
will still be her core item, as it is both a caster and auto-attack based item.
This leads to my final question. Does Irelia serve the same role as she once did? Old Irelia was built to be a diver who functioned as a semi-tank who stuns priority targets, yet was also offensively strong enough to kill them. The new Irelia is less kiteable with her ranged abilities and enhanced mobility from marking enemies. Therefore, she can afford to build more offensive than old Irelia, which makes her seem more of a skirmisher or assassin rather than a diver.
I don't know. What do you guys think?
make sense?
