Does anyone else think that Riot should've prioritize other champions for a rework before Irelia?

I am actually excited that Irelia is getting a change, and can't wait to see her being a true telekinetic blade user (that sure will make her unique), but I feel like there are other champions who are in more serious need of a rework, especially because they lack skill expression.

Volibear Udyr come to mind. They literally do the same thing. Run into an enemy and hopefully win trade by out-statting them. Not to mention, in team fights, they just simply can't run to the back line with the amount of heavy CC, mobility, and utility there is in the game. They are supposed to be juggernauts who can take damage and CC for the team, but unlike Darius Garen Illaoi, they lack the armor penetration to chunk tanks and don't have an execution ult. So even if they have the tankiness of a tank At best they are better for split pushing and clearing waves once they have item 3077 (Udyr doesn't really need it though). Irelia, on the other hand, at least has a resettable dash mechanic with a tenacity passive to reach the back line, and a 2 second stun that is generally more game changing than anything in Udyr's kit. I also think Pantheon could use a rework. All these champs are much more linear and binary than Irelia personally.

Yeah, on Meddler's post after they announced the Irelia rework I asked him why they chose her when there are so many broken (not op, but fundamentally flawed) champs that are thousands of times worse than Irelia and he basically said she's pretty popular and will bring enjoyment to lots of people, moreso than other champs. Makes sense I guess, most rework characters basically get no play but Irelia is actually kinda popular, especially if you look back at the history of League.

Still, I really think Mordekaiser and Nunu absolutely require a rework asap, Morde has literal hundreds of bugs and breaks the game every few patches and Nunu is so incredibly unfun to play as and against that every time I play against him I want to die, as a jungler main.

I mean, I like, never play Irelia, because I don't like her kit. I love her theme and I actually purchased her as one of my first champions (IP) because after 3 weeks she hadn't been free for me to try and I got impatient :P

But yeah, I really hope they nail her theme better with the rework. I want to play her.

Here's the problem, a lot of people like me are the exact opposite. I play Irelia because I like the kit, I really don't give a fuck about her thematics.

This is the stance that most people who play Irelia are going to take, they play her because they enjoy her as a champion. If Riot makes a rework that appeals to you they inherently piss off almost all of Irelia's current players.

ShadowParker7 votes

Is that really the stance most people will take? A lot of people like her for the q which they are keeping. W can easily be a more interesting a ability as well as e. The ult doesn't even feel like an ult.

I think as long as the q is preserved most irelia players would prefer a rework.

While I understand your position and sympathize with it, I would be willing to bet that if the updated Kit still felt good to play, most Irelia players wont be too upset:

The passive- Im pretty sure that even old Irelia mains aren't going to be too upset with a new passive. 1) There is going to be plenty of Tenacity available in the new runes system, and 2) its not particularly interactive. Im sure whatever they come up with (as long as it is appropriately thematic) will be better for everyone.

Q- Will probably stay in some respect.

W- Not sure what will happen with this skill, I can see the passive staying, maybe "Hiten Style" Will be come her new passive, I dunno.

E- This mechanic is not one that I particularly care for. If the stun duration was based on the difference in HP, I think it would be more interesting, but the long duration stun for simply having less than 1% less max hp than your opponent is unfun in my opinion. I see this skill probably getting changed, though I assume she will still have some kind of cc in her kit.

R- This ability is interesting, but I think it could be better.

Overall, I think that if Irelia keeps her agile fighter feel, the old player base will largely be happier with the reworked version.

Honestly, Riot isn't going to keep a crappy champ with a lot of untapped potential just because she has a small fanbase centered around who and what she is now.

I liked the old Eve and i OTPd her for a time and then all the jungle items started changing (from Magus) and she's gotten nerfed. So from my standpoint, i could no longer play her as an Assassin because any other build on her was more viable and she wasn't as squishy. Still was bad to play as her because building like a bruiser while saying "i'm an assassin" brought a huge disconnect between the champion i always liked.

When her rework came, i was elated. Riot correctly identified her core pillars to keep and rebuild around which meant a lot more cohesive champion with an actual viable kit. Everything about her came together and even her skins (which were either 520 and 750 RP) didn't look cheap.

There's no point in trying to deny a VGU for your favorite champion just because you like her as she is. The majority of people want her to be better and Riot can do better. That includes people who never played her once and people who'd want to try her but don't like the current her. It also includes her mains.

If a large majority of the people want for her to get a VGU, player's satisfaction is going to be served by doing exactly that. Riot can't please everyone and they shouldn't even try. What they can do is to make sure that they don't destroy Irelia's core personality and something in her kit that makes her "HER" so that her small "no change" fanbase doesn't trash her after her VGU.

Pretty sure thatbmost Irelia players recognize that aside from Q, the champion is a ball of stats that has some unfair mechanics (E stun). Another common complaint of Irelia mains is that W has no scaling, making W max nearly mandatory and polarizing Irelia as a broken midgame champ thats mediocre-bad early and late.

There's also the need for a firm direction to go with the champ. Urgot got iceboxed twice before he was finally reworked, and I suspect they don't want to go through that sort of painful process again. I have a feeling certain champs will sit on the backburner just because building a cohesive kit and direction for them is going to be a lot more difficult and they're just waiting for that one amazing idea to kick them off.

Irelia, on the other hand, is fairly developed, but has lots of unexplored potential. She is the only champ with a telekinetic blade, but completely fails to use it in the game as such, treating it almost exactly like a normal sword (seriously, imagine swapping it out with a normal sword and see how much it restricts her abilities - it doesn't). I can see why a team would get excited to update her, and I suspect that had a part in why she was chosen.

Their logic is so flawed sometimes. Irelia is popular because she ISN'T in a terrible spot and can still win matchups.

Champs that are less popular are usually less popular because they are critically flawed, have way out of date kits, or Riot just flubbed them in reworks like Morde. They are so terrible when it comes to context that it hurts my head sometimes.

Okay but they actually have a direction with Irelia.

Surveys say that we want Irelia to be VGU'd more than any other champion. The same thing was with Urgot, Yorick and Galio. Their popularity was strong even for one of the worst champions to play as. Maokai simply isn't as interesting to play as or against and his thematic (in my opinion) is rather weak. So it stands to reason why not a lot of people are gunning to see him VGU'd even if Riot can make him 100x better and more cool looking than he currently is.

Champions that show great promise in thematics (even if their gameplay doesn't) are always more likely to be at the top of the list. This MIGHT be said for Udyr as well but i bet that no one really cares about him anymore to an extent because T2G is absent.

PokladnicaZla1 votes

Irelia is just an update(think something around Xin's lvl),while Morde and (I presume) Nunu will get a full VGU(like Sion,Poppy,Taric,Eve,WW).

Muzét5 votes

Irelia is a VGU. She will probably only keep her Q as it is

They better keep her frostbutt skin

I believe a rioter "confirmed" this. Someone would have to find that post, though.

Huh I mean, reworking Nunu could have the same effect than the galio rework. Galio rework was a sucess overall and is rly exciting to play with... the answer meddler gave is flawed =/

Yah I suppose thats a good point, even when WW was strong he didn't even have a 2% playrate

It's also important to note that the team likely had a passion/desire to work on Irelia and had a base direction to start with. I assume that also plays a pretty sizable part in whether or not a champion is picked. I'd rather the team pick something they know what to do with than sit on someone like Morde with nothing and rush into it.

SteelMankind1 votes

Another way of interpreting Meddler's response: Irelia, despite being in a far better state than Udyr or Volibear, does a far poorer job of living up to her theme.

If you want to play a tanky melee brawler who can run people down and maul them to death, Voli abd Udyr deliver pretty well (not their problem that this strategic role has aged horribly in League).

However if you want to play some sort of blade mage/dancer, Irelia, on the other hand, isn't anywhere CLOSE to how she could be. She can telekenetically controls blades (which happen to also hold her soul btw) and she never uses them except by holding them all together and smacking people with the cluster, or shooting them in a straight line via her ult.

Funnily enough, i've never seen one Morde bug in my entire League career while everyone says he has hundreds of them. I can't get any more confused than this.

Malicious Metal1 votes

Most of them are too subtle to notice. Most of them aren't even really impacting his performance.

rtbf2256182411 votes

Okay but if people say he has over a hundred, they should culminate to at least make me notice something.

That's where i'm confused.

Malicious Metal1 votes

It's basically a meme at this point

Titanic hydra not resetting his Q AA for example. A) nobody builds titanic on Morde B) it's not something that would give him a lot more power anyways

It's usually just spaghetti coding and weird interactions that get counted as "bugs" A lot of 'em are visual bugs too like your screen turning red when your gnar clone goes mega.

rtbf2256182411 votes

Okay then. Not like i play him anyway so i'm in no position to argue. At least they're subtle enough for a non-player to not notice.

Rootlo1 votes

Well, Nunu was designed to be unfun to play as and against. The whole goal of Nunu is to make the enemy jungler as useless as yourself. But Morde really needs a rework. He is a walking bug at this point

Guttler11 votes

It's not about who needs it most. It's about which champions the devs have a good idea for that is actionable.

Poppy and Warwick both got reworked before Urgot, but Urgot probably needed it more then they did.

Ravenhale7 votes

To be honest, I think the decision on Irelia coincides with plans for an Ionian Regional Lore Update and they had a higher demand to rework her than Akali (or Shen for all those that feel he got shortchanged by his rework).

I think Irelia is a good choice. They've wanted to get her done for a while now.

Spârky2 votes

You also have to remember they have to do what they think is fun. Why would they work on a champ that they really don't want to work on/ have no interest of working on and pump out a remade champ that they don't feel that confident in when they could work on a champ they want to work on and give us a quality reworked champ.

Meep Man2 votes

Everyone that doesnt main Irelia or have some vendetta against her https://media.giphy.com/media/xT9KVwVraalcvmKBfW/giphy.gif

Elikain2 votes

No because Riot doesn't decide on the VGUs completely on their own. They send out surveys asking who is a more suited fit for the next VGU/one of the next and the ranking they get is basically provided by us. Yea, there are other champions in a worse spot than Irelia but not as popular as her. People want popular champions to be better first and then we get others who are less popular.

Nah. Irelia really needs a rework.

Not because she's bad. But because she has a pretty cancerous kit. A metric fuckton of dashes, gets durable, has innate tenacity, and beats you by letting you win trades with her. Seriously, her stun is a toxic mechanic. You get to stun them by letting them win a trade with you.

A champion can need a rework at any winrate. Although it seems like only shit-tier champs get reworked, it's not because they're shit tier, but because they were gutted so that they're not instawinning against everyone.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

They should be reworked because they rely on stat-checking . . . You know there's a class devoted to doing that right?
