Riot recently made the best addition ARAM ever got just to remove it mere days later...

PaffWasTaken··232 votes·41,395 views

...and this, based on the feedback of people who played ARAM only for the event. Don't base your actions on the same people who throw games because their ranked pocket pick happens to be OP in aram and get nearly perma banned to the point they get triggered every game. Most of them most definitely never heard about what are ARAM accounts and don't understand how bans were a vital addition to ARAM to satisfy the lack of balance who becomes more and more apparent the more ARAM accounts become popular and how much new tools we get to trade/reroll.

Bring back bans to ARAM, its players have been asking for it for years and now you are removing it as soon as people who didn't even play it regularly before complains. We deserve it, we need it and, most of all since we now know it exists (some people argued that random mode bans weren't possible before), we want it to stay.

EDIT: a lot of people have been commenting about how themselves frequently played ARAM pre-bans and still prefer they get removed. Understandable, but sadly the only actual argument that makes sense from what I saw is the fact that they make Arams longer (having to spend even less than an extra minute or mere seconds for a single game sure sounds dramatic either way...). A lot of people have been complaining that they can't play X champ or Y champ, both being often at a minimum of 55% winrate in ARAM. I'll just repeat myself over and over again by saying that ARAM isn't supposed in any way to be predictable, hence why it is normal and in fact more balanced that you are restrained from 10 supposedly OP champions each game to force you to play the rest of the roster at 93% integrity. If your objective is to make several games until you get THE pick you wanted for a guaranteed win, then just play another game mode. ARAM is meant for random picks allowing for experimentation and familiarisation with other champions. X and Y champions being hard as hell to get just means you still have access to about 140 other champions, if you are unhappy with that fact then why the hell are you playing a RANDOM game mode? Don't act like bans just forces your picks to be "unlucky" by removing your OP pocket pick from the roster: every picks should be possible and acceptable, if you aren't able to accept the fact that you can't get a champ from 7% of the whole roster for a majority of games (it's actually impossible to get a 100% banrate after all, and people playing ARAM tend to always possess the top picks for it, meaning you actually have very very high chances to be able to get what you wanted if it gets through bans) then don't pronounce yourself an ARAM fan since you apparently don't like its actual concept.

Also, little tip for you guys: you might want to grab another account before commenting some arguments in favor of the bans removal: it's actually very very easy to verify your account, and you can't imagine my surprise (...) when I saw that a lot of you suspiciously either get a free roll champion or one of the top 10 winrates champions in ARAM and that, for some of you, the actual rate of you getting those last 10 champions is insanely lower than before since about two weeks, dooming you to get those oh-so-horrible (spoilers: they aren't) free roll picks. You fool no one, you gamemode cheesers

EDIT2 : Some people actually brought up an interesting argument, being that banned OP champions just makes the "second tier" of strong champions be as OP as they are. The thing is, that because of how easy it is nowadays to manipulate picks in ARAM through normal means like rerolls or more advanced ones like ARAM-accounts, high winrate champions had an insanely higher pick rate than low win rate ones (quite bizarre to see in a "random" gamemode, no?). Forcing top winrate picks to have a much lower pickrate actually results in two different outcomes: 1- Champions with lower winrates are getting picked more often 2- Champions with lower winrates are fighting way less often against high winrate ones, meaning that they do now have more chances to compete, thus increasing their low winrates. So, after all, there'll always be top picks in aram, it'll always will, but forcing them to be less frequent means they influence less the winrate of other champions, meaning that champions who were precedently trash can tier can actually be used with some decency without having to fear to get matched up against a 65% winrate opponent with they sub-40% ones, which results in a lot more balance than before.

EDIT3: Guys, "playing champs with almost guaranteed wins is fun" isn't a viable argument in any kind of gameplay, ARAM isn't any exception to this either. Some of you are just plainly admitting not wanting bans because you can't play your main in a gamemode encouraging playing other champions that those you are used to, you don't make any sense.

EDIT4: more than 24 hours after the creation of this thread, it still brings a fair amount of feedback. Problem is, this back clearly went downhill for some hours now. People went from simply either being sad about the bans removal, explaining how they are almost vital or how they didn't liked it to simply insulting each other while trying to shut down the opinions of several persons at a same time by throwing insults or claiming entire point of views circle jerks or "boards mindset" (you know, the argument everyone uses whenever they are losing in an argumentation here?). What surprised me even more is that There's an actual Rioter comment in the thread. It sadly isn't related at all to the point of the thread, but it is enough to show there is at least some Rioter attention on here one way or another. Maybe they consider the feedback on bans. Maybe they find the activity on this thread questionnable (there really is a lot of alt accounts commenting here after all). Either way, screaming like monkeys that you can't play fiddlestick anymore and that anyone keeping you from doing so is mentally deranged is just sad. Either show actual feedback on your actual account and, if the points you are trying to make have already been mentionned by me in a way or another as biased because of X reason, then you might reconsider using it since it doesn't add anything new.

EDIT5: Just a little heads up, some of you seems to STILL not understand that bans DON'T keep certain champions from being played at all. All champions can and will be played, since it is literally impossible to have the same bans every single game (and from the comments of people wanting bans, the actual champions that they seem to hate enough to perma ban are quite different from each other). I, personally, hate playing Ziggs but love playing him, so I just didn't ban him and banned someone else while thinking that if zigss isn't banned, there's a chance I get him. But what happens if I DON'T get him? I don't care, thats what I do, and this seems like something that a lot of people defending Riot removing bans seems to not understand: if you play ARAM, you are willingly accepting the fact that you will very rarely get the champions you want, and thats the charm of the gamemode. Don't like it? Don't play it and never come back, simple. In fact, by using some logic we can come to the conclusion that champions who were precedently banned the most frequently would've been less and less banned with time IF Riot just didn't touch the bans and just let them in. How? Because for the first time ever, Riot actually tried to balance ARAM and kept those balance changes (who aren't bad at all I must say) and will probably do more in the future. This means OP champions (those that you guys claim were "permabanned") would've become less and less OP, meaning that the actual reason to ban them would fade away, letting them be more present in picks. Before trying to claim bans in ARAM remove the random aspect from it, can you stop and think about what makes ARAM random, what bans do and what are the gameplay implications of the gamemode both before and after random picking??

what is the reasoning for removing bans? we should at least get context; because imo i saw the same 10-20 champs banned every game.

and lookie it's the champs that are busted on the mode

Considering this event was literally to test things, I really hope they're not removing bans because "people stopped playing after finishing the missions." As I saw people on my friends list who never play aram, play aram for the missions.

ok well tell me why bans aren't justified when many champs on ARAM have 55%+ winrate, and multiple champs have 60%+ winrates? And before the mass adjustments, multiple champs had 65-70%+ winrate for years.

If champs have 52% winrate/high pick rate on SR, the boards lose their fucking minds =-> see Riven Vayne . And by removing bans, we get higher pickrates for all the overpowered ARAM champs.

I remember last time I argued this point about Sona being overpowered on ARAM, and cited her 4 year 70%+ winrate I was promptly downvoted and attacked by the boards;

yet, here we are, even with bans removal, the recent adjustments nerfed her healing by yet another 25%.

just another example of boards' inane "arguments", i.e., you haven't made a point whatsoever.

Terozu11 votes

Because Aram is a silly for fun mode and winrates don't really matter? You're supposed to play ARAM for shits and giggles with weird team comps. As high as Sona's win rate is she really isn't that frustrating to fight in aram, and she only had like a 5% banrate. And now with ARAM specific balancing and anti poke she's even worse than before.

And also, I never made an argument. I stated that this was an event. It was.

To be completely fair, you're bringing up winrates in a for fun mode. There's no real point to that whatsoever, because you aren't trying to win, you're trying to have fun. If you can only have fun by winning, please, do not play an online game. There is not point to playing a game you're going to get so worked up over to the point where you make pointless arguments. Do you get my point here?

OrangeMarine23 votes

You're supposed to play ARAM for shits and giggles

yeah that right there is just flat out wrong; a lot of players take ARAM seriously, and adjust their playstyle to the comp they are given; e.g. Trundle Amumu Graves Gragas Kindred are gonna be pretty useless against Lux Lucian Xerath Nautilus Jinx until 6, get poked so much, but at level 6, they have a huge opportunity to swing the game.

so if u wanna pick up arguments that haven't been voiced, what is the logic of no bans in ARAM when they exist in SR?
Why not just remove bans from SR then?

as far as i'm concerned, you're supposed to play SR for fun so just pick goofy team comps for shits and giggle, might as well remove bans from SR then.

you keep saying it's a for fun mode, when for many players this is the only mode they play any more. So while it is for fun (we're playing a game, hopefully that's the point), some people like to actually try to win in ARAM.

Otherwise when someone AFKs, you could just say, HAHA, well it's a for fun mode! who cares 4v5!

p.s. Don't tell people how they're "supposed to play the mode that way". If you can't understand that you're lost

Terozu8 votes

I have never picked up an argument. Stop trying to start one. I do not care about you or your bans or your opinion on bans. Aram is a mode meant for shits and giggles. End of convos.

OrangeMarine23 votes

you did start an agrument bc your initial point "refuted" my question without any evidence or support whatsoever. You just voiced your opinion as if it was fact, and I am responding to that.

And yet again, here we see it again, you voice your opinion as fact

Aram is a mode meant for shits and giggles. End of convos.

wake up, not everyone shares your opinion

nd if u wanna talk about the event, then why would they test temporary bans ? explain that to me

Cosmicdestro5 votes

People who take ARAM seriously are actually the worst. Haha. Like this person said. It is a game mode for shits and giggles. Why get serious over a game mode you really dont get better in. You can't take it seriously because you can lose off RNG alone.

Infernape71 votes

I guess the ARAM only accounts won. Riot can't do bans yet they can't make every champ available.

Boltonator36 votes

I just cannot for the life of me imagine that the healthy majority of players actually wanted to remove bans from ARAM.

Guess if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘me I suppose. Time to level up an aram account.

SanKakU24 votes

I don't really like the bans but they are a necessary evil because Riot thinks they know how to balance the champs around the mode and they don't and they won't level the playing field by making all accounts have access to champion randomization pools that are limited for competitive reasons. They don't even nerf relevant stats on someone like Maokai, then go ahead and revert some of the nerf for no good reason. XD

ARAM is about more than damage. Cooldowns matter also.

PaffWasTaken10 votes

First of all, Riot did say in the patch notes doing this removal that it was partially based on feedback and discussion between themselves. This does confirm that opinions from the community were taken in charge.

Now, add the fact that an huge proportion of players were welcoming the bans with open arms (on here and Reddit at least) and we can already see a tendency in favor of keeping them. Even now, it has not even been a full day since the ANNOUNCEMENT (not even the implementation!!!) of these changes that the hot section of the boards already have several threads including mine showing exceedingly positive scores, even if anything related to ARAM barely gets any attention in normal circumstances. From this, we can see a strong leaning towards the apprectiation of bans in the gamemode. You can always say that this represents only a vocal proportion and it doesn't actually represent the demographics or whatever, but literally anything can be negated by this same thing to the point it isn't relevant at all and is really tiring to always see here on the boards (such things as saying "Riven and Vayne are perfectly fine, since the boards is the vocal minority and shouldn't be taken seriously at all") Feedback IS feedback as soon as it is observable and should get the considerable weight its worth for, and the observation we can easily set is that Riot went against the popular feedback to make changes that are unwelcome for the majority said feedback.

How do I know that the negative feedback is coming from people barely playing ARAM usually? Well, I feel that you would simply point at an X player saying he is against the bans and point out his game history showing clear evidence of several past ARAM games just to say "haha! I've proven your point wrong by cherry picking amongst an array of possibilities a single occurence that says otherwise!", but I'll still explain myself. As I already said, the proportion of positive feedback against negative one was utterly crushing, meaning that the actual number of occurences of people arguing AGAINST aram bans is actually quite low, low enough that you can literally just show any occurences of "Howling Abyss" in one's match history and it'll show you information that can be applied to quite a big proportion of the feedback (lower occurences of said persons providing such feedback does mean that they represent a much bigger proportion of the opposition themselves when compaired to those going with the trend). So, by simply doing a research within the the match history of some accounts, you can see some pretty interesting things. What a surprise to see amongst most people some tendency to have between about a single game of ARAM or ten each months, depending on how much they play as a whole and still representing a very small proportion of their games played. Personally, I made the assumption that most people giving negative feedbacks and showing those kind of match history play ARAM as something to relieve frustration from normal gameplay. While this is quite understandable, this also means that those kind of people will most probably not experience what frequent ARAM players do experience, since a random game mode that you are unfamiliar with requires more iterations of experimentation to see a trend (such as ARAM accounts and frequent picks who were both aimed at by the ban changes), hence how their feedback is extremely, well biased. Try it: dig up some threads from the last weeks and identify key threads and comments providing negative comments about the bans, since most of them have a solid negative score, you can easily spot them by the furious red colored numbers. Check the users, and while you WILL end up with some results showing guenuine experienced feedback (after all, most feedback were in favor of the ban implementations, but it wasn't under any way exclusively in its favor), you will also end up with some occurences that would bring some thought on "do they really understand what the gamemode is about?" This and, well, a "new" occurence of type of players.

In fact, I will kinda change my first statement that was "based on the feedback of people who played ARAM only for the event" to "based on the feedback of people who most probably have no specific knowledge on its inner workings and those who were actually aimed at by the changes", admitting that I was partially wrong in the first place. You see, while there's some people out there who do have an impressive ARAM history who are also against the bans in it, their picks in it are quite...odd. In fact, you see them playing, yes, an HUGE number of ARAM games, but their picks are, for someone who play as much, quite frequent and weirdly consistent. What a surprise to see people who usually get several champions from the top 10 winrates in ARAM, then get a very frequent number of free-rolled picks after the introduction of bans protest against them. Weird indeed, its almost as if...

As a person who has only 1 account with THOUSANDS of ARAM games, owns every champion, and (when they were still tracking it) had about a 55% winrate in ARAM.

I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE!

Bans are a necessary evil.

Since last major set of ARAM buffs and before the serious evolution of the game from a slow play poke fest while waiting on minions to a more fast paced mode where everything is allowed(improving item scale times like tear and ROA), some champions will ineviitably hit late game fantasy of death and destruction. While the more power picks in the game, ziggs, sona, heimer were definitely terrors their scaling was not as a challenge to deal with these inevitable hypercarry picks. Bans provide some relief that the champions that are going to auto-win the game at 20 are somewhat diminished.

Even if you can't take care of all the terrors, you could at least remove the one bane of your existence that plagued you that 'somehow' showed up from one game to another despite being a random mode. #bringbackbans

Slythrin Umbreon9 votes

A lot of the complaints against bans are clearly coming from people who have no idea why the bans were added in the first place. They seem to think the banning 10 champions somehow made the game mode "not random" and don't understand they were added to deal with ARAM accounts attempting to spam the same few champions over and over again. this is just as bad as Riot refusing to give us 10 bans in SR for years, except worse because they'd barely even been balancing ARAM at all until recently. Imagine SR being overrun by 60-70% winrate champions, and not being allowed to ban them.

The main reason why i play ARAM only, Is because i dont wanna waste 40min-80min in a game and just lose in the end. Rather spend up to 15min-30min max in a game either losing or winning, and i get to try other champs and get mastery points across my champs.

Shame, I liked the bans, it cut out a lot of the busted ass champs in that mode. Yes its a random mode and forces you to learn the other champs you have, but good luck freaking learning when the other team has Karth, Brand, Veig, Ziggs, and Morg. Of course if they luck out with those rolls and are decent with those champs. If we still have bans, i and many others wouldnt be pulling our hair out.

Daddy Sangwoo12 votes

I totally agree with you. I'm an Aram player, that's what I've been doing for years. Aram mode has always been needing bans. It helps us out to decide which team we don't want to have to fight. Because sometimes, even if they're late game you can't do anything. Example : Too much poke, too tanky etc.. So deciding which characters we didn't want to have in the enemy team was quite helping. Most of the time, I ban the same character. It may seem toxic because people that play against me will never have the honor to play it. But still, if we don't want to have to fight a champion we don't like, it's our right. I don't understand why Draft guys can ban and not us. That's simply dumb. At least in Aram ban doesn't come with counter pick.

MasterDClone11 votes

i banned none every game, because i feel like every champion should be played

PaffWasTaken21 votes

Your choice, but if every champions should be played, then the whole gamemode should've been reworked into no bans, no rerolls, no trade and no champion change from dodging while giving full roster to everyone.

The problem before bans happened is that, well, not every champions were played because of how easy it is to manipulate the picks you get. The bans actually enhanced the amount of time low winrate champions were played since it wasn't as easy to rely on getting an high winrate one, thus actually increasing the amount of effectively played champions.

I think bans are absolutely necessary. (I play ARAM from time to time, but mainly SR). Whenever the enemy team got a ton of cancer champions that counter yours, you would just lose the game no matter what you did. I personally have a hard time having fun whilst losing to a poke/zoning team comp that never even gave me a chance to play the game. Having lost in champ select is just not fun.

I played aram a lot and dropped it in this event. But I liked having bans.

I dropped it because tanks were too broken and damage too low. Unless you were a vayne or kaisa (specially vayne) with 3 tanks to peel for you, as a squishy you'd do no damage, and would be perma cc'ed by unkillable tanks and then you'd die.

I think it was either buff tanks and nerf damage, but they this both so it became boring and repetitive. And when you get to be the tank it's too brain dead to be enjoyable.

I think maybe many of us usual aram players felt that way and dropped aram after completing the quests. I bet most of us did so because of balance and not because of bans. Theres a reason most players did use their bans most of the games.

CHODES AND LOADS42 votes

damage has never been the problem. tanks have always won in the long run.

its champs that make their entire team unapproachable -- i.e., veigar, janna, zyra, and cass. you have to have a hardcore ungabunga comp full of heavy dive to make any headway, and then its a 50/50 whether or not youre going to actually win or just snowball the game in the oppositions favor.

the worst part about having to face teams full of that bullshit wasn't that you get poked down -- its that you get poked down, and essentially dont even get to play the game. there is zero avenue of approach against veigar playing safe. its the most boring fucking shit ever. you basically just sit there for 15 minutes and lose in most cases without ever even engaging the opponent.

thats why aram was trash, and its why veigar was double banned in half the games. other than him and some of the other more oppressive zoning champs, there was a good mix of tank bans (maokai, and sion) and even a fair amount of melee dps (yi was common ban in my games)

As a player that plays a lot of aram, I am glad to go back to the old aram. Aram means all random why ban(just get good and shut down your threats) I always banned none because that champ is broke anyway. The ga on roids was broke anyway.(Trynd ult plus damage was not a good idea) The geometry of the level was messed up anyway. The bridge width is too wide and the cannon can be manipulated way too easy compared to the old aram. The sections of the bridge that are eroded also give a little bit more dynamic play rather than a straight line. I will say I was glad that Butchers Bridge came back for a bit, but I like my og one ram.

PaffWasTaken36 votes

If you played that much aram, then you would know that bans existed to counter ARAM-only accounts (who quite goes against the whole "all random" concept whenever there's nothing like bans to keep them away). You would also know that there is no gameplay differences at all between howling abyss and butcher's bridge. No width difference. No differences of eroded sections. No differences from towers except animations (which aren't gameplay-sided). The only things who did differ were the added items, but this thread is about bans who were a completed request that Riot removes. There were A LOT of changes in items in ARAM in its existence, but nothing breaks the gamemode like having to play against people who only have the top 5 winrate champions in their deck. Bans fixed that while giving the option to keep champions that you don't like away from your game after seeing them too often for your tastes.

You can't make the argument "bans go against randomness of the game mode" while it does, in fact, enhances it by keeping frequent picks from being played again (which is something that only kept increasing since there's more and more ease to get the champ you actually want through new additions like the reroll pool). There was nothing random at all in ARAM before because of aram-only accounts, several rerolls, trading, reroll pools and dodges being not punished enough, at least now we had some impact on how enjoyable the games were by keeping the cancerous and frequent picks away (simple math here, ARAM - frequent picks = more randomness).

You actually prove my point: you claim to know a lot about ARAM, yet you seem to ignore a lot of its problems and even gameplay implications and you use that "ARAM experience" to claim that bans are bad without even understanding their full effect. Riot looked at this kind of feedback without verifying the actual implications of such statement and simply thought that bans were unwelcomed. The worst thing that could happen with bans in place is getting your main and/or pocket pick to get perma-banned, which is in fact THE actual way to play ARAM: enjoy and experience a multitude of champions in a nearly infinite array of team comps, not relying on getting those 2 or 3 picks that you absolutely want. In fact, if thats what you expect from ARAM, then don't play it at all, its that simple.

It's fun to play OP champs on Aram. Bans didn't even come close to solving the composition balance issue of random champ selection. It did take away the fun of playing OP champs, though. Glad they removed it.

PaffWasTaken21 votes

Because it didn't have, in fact, the objective to correct composition balance since, in a random gamemode, it shouldn't even be considerable to balance. Its actual point was to keep OP champs away a little since the actual point of ARAM is to play a multitude of champions, not a select few. If your objective in ARAM is getting to play a small array of champions, then play something else, since the whole point of playing ARAM is the fun from playing several champions, OP or not. If you are not happy because you can't play OP champs anymore, go back to SR

Honestly there are a couple things that bans do:

  1. for the ARAM accounts they ban out the free to play champions so that their pool is very much less random and they have a higher chance to get champions they purposefully bought just for Aram
  2. newer accounts have a potential (not very high probably like 2% chance) of having all their champions banned or almost all of them, making it randomly select from a champion pool of 2-3 champions (since there aren't that many free week champions to play)
  3. older accounts that have more champion pool than Aram accounts can ban out champs they don't want to play or play against (especially those that have small champion pools)

My proposal:

  1. keep bans!
  2. open the champion pool to every champion for Aram only, this will let people play all champions get familiar with the ones they they might have fun with and purchase those for SR or TT. This will also shut down the ARAM accounts so that the randomization is consistent on every account.

Bans were definitely needed, especially at 2.5k+ MMR. But if you plan on leaving the poke nerf in, you HAVE to address certain tanks/bruisers as well. They are just as (if not, even more) overpowered as the long ranged pokers.

PaffWasTaken9 votes

Interesting, but really easy to bias if it's based on popularity. The biggest proportion of people in favor of ban removal are persons possessing ARAM-only accounts, AKA people who were aimed at by the bans implementation. While they do not represent a big proportion of the total community, they most likely represent one of the biggest groups who regularly play ARAM. Outside of ARAM focused events like we got, a lot of people in ARAM games use those kind of accounts, running a popularity contest between a gamemode countering them and another where they can destroy the balance supposed to be maintained by the bans is laughable for them: not only they get to bypass the limits of ARAM once again, but they calmly force Riot to give them a free-pass doing this because of sheer population.

Riot: "Gosh guys we can't do anything right, can we???"

Us: "Yes, exactly."

(I play in Japan server, it gives me the best ping because of where I live. This is my crappy smurf.)

I love ARAM, I used to play it a ton. It was how I learned how to play ADC (now my main cough only cough role) and how I learned how to teamfight (and I suck at laning, great). Eventually I stopped playing as much. During the event though, I started again. Bans were fantastic. I never had to see Karthus autowin a game again (except for that one time my friend dared me to ban someone else. they got Karthus and we lost). Please bring back bans. I still like ARAM and play it now but bans made it less one sided. Random is not balanced (AHEM arurf) but I think bans make it more interesting and a teeny bit more skill based. I'm not complaining about random since it's the entire point of ARAM. but FUCK YOU ARURF

This might be just me, but all of the fun champs for me get banned every time. I quitted ARAM after the first day of playing because its just not fun for me anymore. I don't want or like playing melee champs or adcs. If you look at my profile, you will see that all the champs that get banned, are the ones I main/like. I like that they removed the ban system, and i hope they keep it that way.
