Is Blitzcrank's kit healthy?

Sirsir··18 votes·3,087 views

I seriously want to know public opinion on him. I mean I know he isn't OVERPOWERED but his kit design seems pretty toxic. You can't really hide behind minions when he presses W and runs around it. The grab is huge and moves fast. And it is NEVER fun to play against. (unless you are Amumu Amumu)

Leona Thresh Alistar thanks for the free initiate, Blitz. You're a pal.

Sirsir11 votes

Irrelevant really. He has counters. Who doesn't? I suppose I have to play one of those champs in every blind in case I go against a Blitz?

Plus the support isn't the only one in lane. He is the whole reason I always hesitate to play Draven in blinds...

Llanite1 votes

Those that have no counter are either:

+Too blank, no special move or trick. +Too weak, everyone is his counter.

Which one would you prefer to have? I'd rather have one with defined strength, weakness and counters.

The grab is just kind of dumb because a good one or a bad one can decide a game by itself. I mean you could miss leo ult or sona ult and lose, but the grab just seems worse because of the cd and it being a non ultimate ability. Blitz is just always frustrating because it doesn't matter if the person or good or bad somebody is going to be frustrated.

I find him toxic. Not OP perse, but his entire identity literally begins and ends with his grab that can literally win/lose you the game depending on how lucky/unlucky you are.

He's nothing but a giant yellow wildcard.

Wullf1 votes

I agree, made a post about that also.

As Blitzcrank Jungle (I know is not a very viable jungler but it works), but ganking normally consist of using your knockup then your grab, after the knock up, the laner will blow flash, then you grab them afterwards. Quite hard to land against champs with cc or silence like Kennen, Syndra, and Garen. Sometimes, you don't even need the hook when ganking for a Darius or something.

LordKentravyon1 votes

That's actually the original intend purpose of the grab - not to pull someone to initiate but to try and bring an escaping target back into the fight, I was told his original intention was to be a top lane bruiser (hence the AA speed buff + E damage)

killd0zer1 votes

No it's always been for both.

It's close to Pudge's Meat Hook ability which is usable in the same ways, and also for saving allies (or trolling)

the risk/reward on blitz is way out of whack. especially late game when one good grab wins you the game. I also think his ult does too much damage. 275 aoe damage with a CC attached to it.

Edbwn5 votes

On a crazy low cooldown, don't forget.

Drukyul7 votes

I think he'd be more interesting if his Q range were nerfed noticeably and he was buffed in other areas to compensate. Right now he's just a walking grab bot.

KidSpectre6 votes

I like him. Outplaying a Blitzcrank can be pretty rewarding, but it only takes getting pulled once to result in disaster. In a straight 1 on 1 scenario, it isn't that bad. But in the context of team fighting it is an extremely powerful tool. The rest of his kit is pretty functional, no glaring faults there. His only real problem is that his Q is conditionally very powerful, and it's not even that it is overpowered.

TTUPhoenix1 votes

I often play Morgana when I'm a support, and baiting out his hooks before shielding myself or my adc can be really fun and challenging, since it comes down to reflexes and clever thinking. Does he realize I'm baiting it? If I get too close to make my self a more appealing target, I may not be able to get the shield up. What if I'm trying to pull it and he goes for my adc instead? What if he successfully baits my shield out then grabs me?

Awoof1 votes

Or he might just grab again while your shield is on cd.

TTUPhoenix1 votes

Exactly. It comes down to skill, awareness and reflexes on both our parts, how well we track each other's cooldowns, etc. If we win the lane, I feel that it wasn't because my kit was better or because I hard-countered him. It was because I outplayed their support (and hopefully my adc outplayed theirs). Conversely, if we lose, it was probably because he outplayed me.

OperationDEEZ16 votes

Blitzcrank 's Q is a horrible mechanic and is one of the most toxic moves in the game, these kinds of no risk high reward playstyles just shouldn't exist. Period.

Narasimha2 votes

no risk high reward

Have you looked at the mana cost? No? How about the CD?

A missed blitz hook is much more devastating than missing other skill shots.

OperationDEEZ15 votes

Even then he can still just completely halt your CS by simply sitting in the nearest side bush and sitting there. And if you get hooked, you blow summoners or you die. Period. unless their ADC is a box of fucking cornflakes or they're really far apart for some reason, which won't happen against an opponent who isn't utter shit. There's no counterplay to it once you get grabbed. The only exception to this is Ezreal . Mana cost? Well let's take the fact that Supports have a significantly higher base mana regen than mages, and along with item 3070 and I don't see the big deal.

ThePlasticSpork5 votes

I personally think Blitz' design is pretty poor.

Like, 90% of Blitz' power is contained in his grab. I'm not really a fan of kits that are set up like that (hello, Cassiopeia), because it makes the rest of their abilities feel incredibly lackluster. Almost all of Blitz' gameplay is tied into hitting or missing the grab, with the exception of his ult which he can use to stop champions like Malzahar or Kat. His E and W are not interesting abilities by themselves, because all you use your W for is to get better positioning for a grab or for running away, and your E is near useless except for knocking up grabbed targets. His E doesn't even get any benefits for leveling it except for a reduced cooldown.

Blitzcrank also kinda has the same problem that Nidalee has. That is, you can miss like 90% of your skillshots, but it just takes one lucky hit for you to be a game changer. This applies both in lane and towards the late game, although at least during teamfights you run the risk of initiating for the enemy team by pulling the wrong person.

terkmc4 votes

The grab is fine, I have more problem with his Overdrive. His grab alone is balance onto poisitioing by both him and you. Throw Overdrive into the mix and "lol what positioning" as he reposition for his grab faster than you can reposition to counterplay it

SmokingPuffin4 votes

Blitz is healthy. His kit is easy to balance and nothing particularly bad happens if he's in the meta.

Blitz is also anti-fun. People generally hate playing against his low-risk, high-reward playstyle.

The5lacker3 votes

...No.

Why is this even a question?

Sirsir1 votes

Wait no you don't think his kit is healthy or no you don't think he is a problem?

The5lacker1 votes

No Blitz's kit isn't healthy. What kind of psychopath thinks that a one-trick pony who grabs and locks down opponents from a mile away, almost passively out-runs most everyone in the game, and can only be balanced by ludicrously restrictive mana costs is in any way, shape, or form healthy?

straight4free3 votes

There's a reason Sivir is almost always picked in pro play. It's partially for her initiate, but mostly because she can actually CS in a lane against a Morgana Blitzcrank Thresh without putting her in great danger.

And Riot must realize this, and their response is likely to be to nerf Sivir instead of the real problems in the lane.

Vayne sees play for much the same reason.

Sirsir1 votes

I thought Sivir in pro play was a relatively recent thing :\ But I don't watch pro play so I can definitely be wrong...

Her meteoric rise has a lot to do with Jarvan's dominance -- if he can engage without needing to EQ he has very good AoE CC to follow up. The fact that her laning is safe is why she is picked as much as she is, however, and blind to the enemy support/adc. She is the lane counter, not the other way around.

Gin no Nekomata3 votes

Debatable. He's a rather old champion, designed long before Riot had worked out the finer details on their design philosophy and their tech. This means that his kit isn't nearly as refined as that of current champions; for example, his grab is poorly telegraphed, has a wonky hitbox, and looks pretty shody.

He was probably meant as tanky, cc dispensing boxer robot, but in practice all he does is stay at range until he can grab & chain CC people. The guy's lockdown is pretty ridicoulus; if he lands a grab, he can immediately knock you up and then silence you while you get murderded. AP Blitzcrank can do that even on his own, with the ult blowing up squishys while having a huge-ass shield annd a ms-boost in case something gets wrong.

He's not among the most broken, but there's a reason most people don't like going up against blitz; he just needs to land a good hit once to change the game, and runs basically zero risk for it.

Krinu2 votes

I will say that, as a person who tends to play less-mobile champions (Soraka, Kayle, Kog'maw, etc.) I find him one of the hardest supports to lane against. You have to be constantly aware of where he is and what the status of his grab CD is, because one grab is basically instant death.

That said, I'm not sure if I'd call it overpowered. I only play at low skill levels, and it wrecks me there, but IDK if it's that good when people are better at dodging.

Tsunday2 votes

Went Thresh into Blitz last game. was 5/1 before I got shutdown (and I say Thresh into Blitz but I picked first). Leona is probably the best pick against Blitz though because it's a free stun or at least a free dash to the carry. Braum is a good pick too, pre 6 he can dash right out, after 6 he is normally tanky enough to get out, and if you aren't in too much danger when you get pulled you have some pretty nice stun stacking.

TAOxEaglex2 votes

ITT bronze players complain about a champ that isn't even top tier support, much less OP

"His grab is all luck"

"His grab is OP because he can just run around minions and get you"

I am literally lol'ing

Silents4293 votes

No one is complaining or calling him OP, he was just asking if anyone thinks its toxic, and promoting an actual discussion, unlike you.

DotEleven2 votes

If he's using W, and running around minions, that should be your time to punish him for trying to walk up, you and your AD should be hitting him during those moments. Or, follow his lead and walk around the minions to the other side and 2 v 1 his AD.

Killer X 121 votes

I have no issue with Blitz. I do not play him, and sure he has that AOE silence of an ult, but its not like you can just walk into the enemy team when they are above wood 2. He is useless without his pull as well.

I think the issue people have with Blitz is that he has so much zoning potential. Even if the blitz is horrid you can still accidentally walk into the hook by trying to dodge it. Also hooks that don't look like they will hit you almost certainly will. I dislike hooks as a mechanic, but i can't see blitz or thresh being toxic to the game. There is counter play to hooks, its not like Fizz E or Fiora ult or other things that have item dependent counter play.

Sirsir2 votes

The whole 'walking behind the creeps' thing was really more about the lane than mid-late. Plus with all the waveclear most teams have creeps aren't a problem past then unless the enemy team has baron.

Kitten of Evil1 votes

It's healthy because free week Blitz.

Raja Chachki2 votes

free week Blitz's never land hooks....NEVER :)

Mr Slowdeath1 votes

Yes his kit is healthy.

  1. "can't really hide behind minions when he presses W" - Then don't hide behind minions when he presses W.

  2. "the grab is huge and moves fast" - Many champions are also huge, in comparison. Your support or tank could be considered a block to hide behind - the bigger and tankier the champion, the better to hide behind.

  3. I find it fun to play against, because if I make him chase me far enough and dodge his grab, he's now almost fully at my mercy with two spells on cooldown and his E out of range.

You should play Blitzcrank for at least 10 games, and if possible, play against players of various skill levels. Somewhere in those 10 games you'll find either someone who you just can't grab unless maybe you burn Flash, or you'll land your grabs and still not come out on top somehow, or you'll get counterpicked and have a serious chunk of your playstyle squashed. But also, if you win all 10 of those games, consider that you might just play Blitzcrank really well. You can then reflect on what seemed so easy to do that it was basically toxic, and ask the question "could my opponents have done something about that?" Most of the time, the answer will be "yes, they could do something", which is healthy.

Sirsir7 votes
  1. So basically you are saying let him completely halt your CS just by running up?

I have played Blitz plenty. Its fun. So was spear-chucking Nidalee back before her rework. But its not fun to play AGAINST.

'"yes, they could do something", which is healthy'.- Flawed logic. All you have to do is dodge it. If it was that simple every champion with a skillshot would be useless.

Mr Slowdeath1 votes
  1. Isn't that what Leona does? Thresh? Braum? Alistar?

Who ever said dodging was the only option? And no, my logic is not flawed, yours is. Not every champion with a skillshot has Blitzcrank's mana issues. Not every champion with a skillshot can hit only one thing with that skillshot every 20-16 seconds. Not every champion with a skillshot has to seriously consider hitting the wrong champion with it.

While not the only solution, the simplest solution IS "just dodge it". Another great solution is, as I mentioned, walk away. You'll position Blitz and his marksman next to your minions after the chase and successful grab, which means they take damage from minions during the fight, whereas you don't. If your support is tanky, advise them to always stand in front of you while you both run back. That successful grab isn't so successful if it hits a tank and causes a 2v2 that's in your favor because only your minions respond to the aggro.

Consider that if Blitz's marksman is following then he's not farming either, so should Blitz miss his grab, you haven't actually lost anything. If Blitz's marksman isn't following him, which will happen from time to time with more passively inclined marksman players, then beat the stuffing out of Blitz until his marksman comes to the party, if they even do come to the party.

Sirsir4 votes

All of those are much easier to dodge. Braum isn't a problem as long as you don't get too close to your enemies creeps, Thresh telegraphs his hook to ridiculous proportions, Alistar is... weird, and Leona has to wait for her carry to follow up (and her initiate is slower and smaller). And you can outrun Leona. When Blitz presses W you can't get out of the way fast enough.

Blitz's marksman doesn't need to stop CSing until the hook actually lands, he can just kite the wave towards them and only has to miss CS to get the harass/kill.

His Q isn't the only problem in his kit, the W is almost worse and his passive is so troll...

Blue blitzcrank :) My favorite.

dark binding roots you for 3 seconds and can be countered by something like a scimitar if you are an adc(I build it somewhat often). grab+knockup+silence is like.. 2 seconds? plus whatever teammates are throwing at you since you get pulled in instead of simply rooted.

Sirsir6 votes

Yes but dark binding leaves you where you are and, like you said, can be countered by cleanses. Blitz hook can't, and brings you into the enemy team where they blow you up before you hit the ground.

Altricad1 votes

You know, Thresh can hook you and stun you for the same duration as a max length blitz pull, jump to you, knock you back ( like blitz's e) while also slowing you. Apply a good amount of CC with his ulti ( Blitz's ulti is strong no doubt, but poor sustained cc).

Even if his adc has the ping of a toaster, he can pull them out with his lantern, and in lane he can haras you cuz he's RANGED.

Also, his pull has a longer range, I srsly think thresh is Blitzcrank v2. The only way blitz beats him is through the near instaneous pull and the higher displacement.

I know your feels, OP. I hate playing Draven aganist Blitz too. But know who's worse? Morgana

Especially a good one that aims the q where your axe lands, she then proceeds to throw out her vomit-pool and reduce your hp to half

Envy Sin2 votes

You know thresh has a LONG windup right?

Sirsir1 votes

Unlike Blitz Q, Thresh Q has meaningful counterplay, he can't just press a button and run up behind the creeps that are covering you. Plus its twice as telegraphed and has a slower projectile.
