Brand has been played in mid lane once ever in the past 2 years of LCS and he lost

As far as I can tell from the stats on this site http://oracleselixir.com/

I really enjoy Brand's playstyle but he can't deal with very many midlaners. He is bad against any champion with mobility or any champion that outclasses him in either poke or waveclear. His poke and waveclear are both above average but ultimately there are going to be better picks for either of those things.

Here are some major issues I see with Brand.

  • His ult is fizzled by invulns. So if you have your ult bouncing in a teamfight somebody can save their allies by using hourglass or another invuln to stop further bounces. The difference is if another AoE like Ziggs ult is coming down and you use hourglass, you only save yourself. Same with any other AoE. Only Brand has this problem. I believe this problem has always hindered Brand severely in high level play. The better your opponents the more likely they are to just shut down the ult and there's nothing you can do about it. There are so many other AoE champs you can pick who do not have to deal with that and they often have mobility or defense too.

  • His %hp damage isn't doing him any favors. It helps him as a support since it lets him get away with less items. As a mid it doesn't do that much for him. You never face a champion in mid that it's good against. Maybe top, but he's not mobile or tanky enough to go top.

  • His itemization forces him to give up defensive utility. His damage output is balanced around the fact that he has good synergy with Liandry's and Rylai's but that means he will be giving up a lot of damage by rushing an Hourglass or Banshee's. He's less able to adapt his build based on defensive needs. Other mages don't have this problem even though they also tend to have naturally less vulnerable kits (better mobility or kiting). Regardless of how you feel about mage itemization, you have to admit that Brand is suffering more than others due to how dependent he is on Liandry's and Rylai's.

  • His AoE for both waveclear and teamfights is either matched or outclassed by champs with more utility or just more reliable/better CC and more reliable AoE.

It really sucks whenever mage itemization is improved and it's supposed to help champions who are having trouble but every time we just see more of the champs who were dominant before due to mobility or utility.

So I expect that to happen again and Brand will remain only viable as support. Other champs will abuse item changes too well for Brand to compete.

The reason he wont be played in mid

  • Riot continued to lower his ratio scaling while increasing his base damage. When you do this, it makes the champion easier to balance and harder to snowball off kill but the downside is, you encourage the champion to be played with less AP damage items. Its' why he can survive as a support; high base damage, low ratios. Why building as AP when you don't get rewarded.

  • They buffed his passive. It was a nice change but in mid lane, most champions who land a full rotation on you, will kill you. Brand on the other hand needs to use his passive to pull nice damage. The problem is, if you just land one ability, it's nowhere as effective as landing 1 ability by other champion

Granted, he is still played by some as a mid laner mainly because he synergies well with some AP items. If those items get changed, or nerfed, he wont be played mid again. Those items are mainly item 3116 item 3151. Riot just needs to lower his base damage and increase the ratios. Encourage players to mid AP on him instead of 2x support items

I don't agree with lower his base and increase ratios because he is too weak to be fixed by a power shift. He straight up needs buffs.

I could see a reduction of his passive base but only to keep support Brand in check. If that happens he will need additional buffs rather than just scaling.

I think he should get some kind of self-sustain to help him in mid. He's so immobile and it's so easy to avoid his skills that he needs some way to stay healthy so it's harder to dive him.

Another thing to explore is improve his ult in some way like let it bounce off himself like beta Ryze.

And ofc a QoL fix to his ult so it will bounce off invuln targets (do 0 dmg but continue to another target)

He doesn't need mobility. If anything, his E might need a slight hitbox radius increased. Other than that, he's kit is fine. Like many mid lane champions, he's kit does have or need mobility. The bigger issue is damage. Mid game, his ratios are not that guy and late game, a full build, he can't kill a adc with a full rotations. A tristana would be able to out trade and kill him if she QSS's his stun

I didn't say he needs mobility. I mean that with immobility as a weakness he needs some other strength to make up for it. It's easy to poke him down and dodge his abilities so I think he needs sustain to be able to grind it out until he actually lands stuff.

I disagree. Brand should be a all-in champion like he was pre-rework. He has the ability to poke with his long range high damage W. Some of his abilities have lost over 20% scaling, and 25% base damage.

He used to survive in lane by poking from range> When he had the chance, he'd all in to pretty much beat any champion. Once he was reworked, that went out the window.

He was just as bad as a mid before the rework. He's never seen successful LCS play as far as I know even though he's been around since season 2. He needs more than just damage because he's mechanically unreliable. Yes, he has pokes with good range, but he still gets poked out easily by champs with more reliable abilities and either sustain and/or mobility.

Giving him sustain wouldn't prevent him from being an all-in champ. It would just let him grind it out until he manages to land stuff and go for an all-in.

Like remember Vlad even at the height of his disgusting infinite sustain power was also an all-in champ.

But I mean, I totally agree that Brand needs more scaling. I just think that he needs additional buffs besides just damage.

His ult still bounces if the enemy uses zhonya. They removed this during the mage update

I think the worst thing in his kit for midlane is how hard it is to properly farm/clear minion waves etc.

I remember they fixed something bad about his ult but I don't think it was this. Maybe it was that they left it so the initial target can nullify his ult before it starts bouncing. That's still a problem.
