My hope for the Tank Update

My hope are these things.

1: Less Linear At the moment with a couple exceptions tank gameplay on real tanks consists of: Take no damage while radiating AoE and doing too much burst. Or die before reaching any enemies. As we know from the Cinderhulk crisis of S5, tanks can become "I stand on your team with damage going and eventually you die."

What I would like to see instead is more opportunities for tanks to succeed or fail based on their skill and planning. Sion is a prime example of this. Tanks should have ACTIVE agency over fights. From varying and versatile but dodgable CC, to damage being more than "I walk on you/click on you and damage happens" instead "I put forth active effort to damage you."

Tanks should have a say in when they succeed and fail. They shouldn't be infallible when too strong and worthless when weak. More abilities that can fail but reward succeeding well.

Champions should be rewarded for succeeding. Not existing.

2: More build options This happens to a couple classes. But I would like to see niche items be more viable and trash picks to be reworked. While toxic ones could see revisions. While they are more versatile in builds than say... Marksmen. They still could use some work in the area.

I'd rather stop the "All top lane tanks rush sunfire" stuff.

3: Less role restricted A lot of tanks who use to be viable in multiple roles now only go jungle. Or only go top. Or only go support. I would like to see fewer tanks balanced to do a specific role and more balanced to be generally decent champions. In general I'd prefer this for all classes.

4: Shit early, great mid, shit late**** Mentioned already by Big Lincoln. But I would prefer if tanks had differing power spikes or if some were generally good most the game but excellent nowhere. At the moment tanks have low agency early game except a couple top laners. And then great mid games followed by trash late games.

Conclusion No class in the game should just win because their items or design is tuned higher. League is suppose to be competitive. It is suppose to be decided by the culmination of the mistakes, victories, plays, decisions and communication of 10 people. Never should a match be decided completely because they picked x champion or I build x item. Items and stats should be contributing factors to decision making, not THE deciding factor in winning. Any rework or design including those for tanks should keep that in mind.

At the moment too many tanks consists of 2 decisions and 1 gameplay tactic. Then pray you win based on how long your stats hold and how much your damage auras deal. I think tanks don't just deserve but NEED more expression of their skill. More agency. So when a play goes well a player can say "I did that" and when it goes bad they can say "They played better than I did". Versus the current issue of "I had enough armor" or "I didn't have enough armor".

Giving any champion or class the opportunity to fail means you can reward them more for success.

Pretty much agree on every one of these points.

My biggest gripe with tanks at the moment is that they're too binary and don't offer a lot of skill expression. There's only minimal differences in a player who played 10 games as Maokai or one that has over 100 under his belt.

Only real hope I have is that they make some fun MR items, if that makes sense. All the cool tank items like Sunfire, DMP and Randuins with very visible additions to the bulk feel fun to build. Being forced to rush something like SV feels very unsatisfying because in the end it really is just a bundle of numbers. ... Also CDR options for Shen, because I'm never gonna shut up about that after all the IP I blew on making a CDR page for him :P

I don't get why everyone's so in love with Sion. I find his kit to be far too slow, far too clunky and far to predictable. I really don't think he's the perfect mold of what a tank should be, he does something that works for him but most tanks are going to be significantly faster than him. It makes no sense for someone like Sejuani or Zac to be as slow as he is, these champions are fairly reliant on their speed and fluidity.

Mostly, counterplay is the reason why people think of Sion as the ideal/perfect tank. His Q is telegraphed, and at the same time has multiple counterplay (walk out, interrupt channel). This feels better to play against, and if you get hit you know you got outplayed.

Similar for other abilities, with maybe E being the exception. That's his most reliable ability, but even then still pretty weak.

To me Sion is just too unreliable. He ends up feeling like you're testing the incompetence of the enemy rather than your own ability. That's why I personally prefer the design of other tanks, I don't want a champion who's clunky and unreliable, I want a champ who's fluid and has abilities that combo well into each other.

There are several reasons people are in love or starting to love Sion. First off is the feeling of unfairness of dealing with over loaded champions. You won't get that vs a Sion. He has trade offs, his Q deals good damage and cc but is clunky and slow for example. That is very balanced as opposed to the cram everything into a kit.

Secondly he can feel rewarding to master. As you said he is clunky, however he does have a lot of flow with his moves. He has to land his E or R to get a womb combo in his own kit off. Especially if the timing on his W was right.

There may be more reasons but I can't think of them right now. You are correct that he is clunky. In fact still the clunkiest champion, so I do get why you dis-like him. He can't really solo carry at any stages of the game because of that. Unlike other tanks Sion will need help to land his CC at some point because of all the mobility. ADCs being in the back, and mages having hourglass makes them harder to hit. Cc is being shot everywhere which screws up his flow. This being all ironic for being the party VANGUARD tank. This is also a good point in people liking him. It promotes team work and team comps.

The unreliability of his spells also mean he can have very low cooldown. His Q and E have like 3 or 4 second cooldown with 40% CDR and max rank iirc. And less than 1 minute on R.

That's the point! Sion feels maybe a bit slow and "clunky" but he is one of the best examples of champion-design and balance.

Only cause there is a vayne, yasuo, lee and lb doesn't mean Sion is bad - the others have bad kit design.

I love his e because i once snipe killed a teemo with it. Felt so good lol

Sure he's pretty obvious when he's in a 1v1, but you'd be surprised how many people disregard him in a clustered teamfight. He can do significant damage if ignored, and very disruptive if he can combo. Sadly he's basically the only late game tank thanks to his infinite scaling passive.

That's not really true. Tanks with huge durability steroids that LW can't shred through like Maokai and Alistar tend to be pretty tanky late game. Sejuani is also the strongest of all lategame tanks, even if her method of doing so is basically becoming a bruiser.

Merely 3 out of the entire bunch; however the majority of tanks still scale up slower without some significant lead to begin with, and still end up getting chunked late game thanks to the buffed anti-tank means.
