What if Teleport was ground targeted instead of targetted?

I was just thinking. If instead of teleporting to a tower/ward/minion what if we could teleport anywhere within a small radius of the tower/ward/minion. This would raise the power, versitility and unpredictability of teleport without really buffing it straight forward. Making teleports feel a little more live and dynamic. It is a small thing but it is a thing.

Just a thought. Post why this would or wouldn't be a good idea below.

It's not a good idea because it's a straight buff to tp

Fair enough but it isn't a huge buff. Just makes TP a little more versitile and unpredictable for enemies. Do you think it would need compensation nerfs?

They'd probably legit need to double the cd and it would still be good. It would remove the counterplay of sweeping and clearing so you don't get tp'd on. nvm 'bout the last bit; re-read the post.

I don't think it's a good idea - primarily because, with the new teleport targeting paradigm involved in the idea, there's a dozen or so new challenges to face. First and foremost of them would be telegraphing:

At the moment, Teleport does a fairly good job of showing who's coming and where at; the whether they're coming to the tower, a Minion, or on top of a Ward, seen or not (and, Teleport also has some negative affects in that it reveals wards used on, giving all enemies sight of your vision.)

Changing so that Teleport can be cast in an area around given Teleport Targets would basically mean all that telegraphing is kind of useless, as you'll never know where the person's teleporting to; for instance, you don't know if that Galio is going to teleport right on top of your backline while you try to take his team's mid tower, and so on.

Not just in telegraphing, though, they would also have to rebalance Teleport around the new function; my idea is that they would probably cut the ability to Teleport to Minions, and possibly to Wards. Why I say Ward Teleporting might get removed as a consequence of area-teleporting instead of target-teleporting is that, being able to teleport even a roughly small area around a Ward would generally allow people to get over walls with a well placed ward and a smart teleport Cast; possibly creating too many situations in the favor of people with abstract ward placement.

So, between the technical difficulties of telegraphing and the balance difficulties of the concept in and of itself, I think this might be one of those things that's better on paper than in practice. (but, this is mostly my opinion; as objective as I hope I was about it, "opinion" is all this wall of text really chops up to.)

I hope you find my criticism isn't too harsh, and I hope you might be able to raise some points of interest I may have missed over in reading and writing.

I see. Your arguments are very well made. I was thinking a radius of 150 wouldn't hurt but I could see some of the problems with telegraphing. What if the spot they TP'd to had the TP effect?

With that, I think most of the issues would be strictly technical; I'd imagine the easiest way around most of it would be to use a cast paradigm like Katarina's Shunpo, with the same telegraphing as is normal (perhaps with some small arrow designating direction?).

As a secondary note, I wrote most of the above up before you had commented to both myself and to MagicFlyingLlama about the cast range, and while 150 might still be enough clearance for wall-teleports, I can see it as being a small enough range to not break anything.

Gotcha. Thank you for your feedback!

It would be broken.

I see. I am talking about like a 150 radius however. You think that would break it?

150 would probably be fine, but i could see mistargeting issues..
