I don't think Seasons 1-3 was any more balanced than the game is now.

So, hear me out, because this is sort of a theory post rather than any concrete, factual info.

Many people point to Season 1-3 as the "prime" of league. The most balanced time with the most champion picks, the most divversity, whatever have you. I'd like to challenge that but not from a mechanical standpoint. I'm not going to argue "Oh Season 1-3 was WORSE" or that Seasons 4 and beyond were balanced masterpieces but rather, I want to focus on the biggest change: The players.

Season 1-2 was one of the earliest ages of League of Legends. It was the genesis of the meta. It was the point where the League we know today took a rough shape. Again, bear with me. It was a wild, unknown time where everything was viable...because nobody TRULY understood how the game worked and what was strong. Take for example, GP/5 items. For the longest time, people laughed them off. They were something you picked up if you couldn't CS because you suck at the game haha so fany. Then people realized if you can CS and grab a GP/5 item, your gold income skyrocketed. And it stacked.

Even pros, in the infancy of the game, were still new to the inner workings of League. Take this clip for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmJvKx1n8TE

Scarra -loses his mind- when he sees someone pull off an insec for the first time. These days, if you can't do that, you shouldn't be playing Lee Sin at a high-tier level. There were so many small but major things nobody knew about the game from pros to noobs. I don't think League was any better or worse; We only thought it was more balanced because we earnestly knew so little about the game that we were missing major broken things in the game.

Of course, there's no way I can prove this. The obvious way would be to send a pro team today back to the days of S1/S2 but time travel is a messy and sloppy thing. But rather, consider it a possibility. Maybe League always had these problems and maybe League always had some gross imbalances. To quote that cartoon about the depressed horse:

"When you look at the past through rose-tinted googles, all the red flags just look like flags."

But we weren't plagued with cancer like yasuo, or meta slaves or wilting tilting snowflakes which makes up for it.

That ignorance makes games fun, the art of exploration and discovery.

Oh, there was definitely stuff that could rival (and perhaps even surpass) Yasuo and meta slaves.

3 second fear Fiddlesticks while you randomly walked in every direction. Kassawin. Original assassins like LeBlanc or Akali. OG Sona/Ezreal poke lanes. Soraka giving back mana.

Ignorance certainly made it fun, but I certainly wouldn't argue about balance of Season 1-3 vs. 4-8

That can't last forever, though.

At least we have the memories... -queues ad blitzcrank and fiddlesticks duo lane montage- :(

Without a doubt the balance was much worse the further back you go. Most players just don't remember it that way because what was happening in high elo was much less exposed than it is now.

I lol at people saying season 5 was the best in terms of balance

Towers were also shit Ranger's Trailblazer Runeglaive Ezreal Sated devourer/ Old Rageblade that used to give aoe Sejuani with like 65% winrate Fiona rework GP rework with 60% armor pen The good old juggernauts patch TP/Red smite cinderhulk shyvana top Kalista

AoE Rageblade was Preseason 6.

It was fun. Idk about balanced. Games were slower. Good back and forth. Also fortify was a great default for a new player to bring to the team. As they learned

Nobody understood how league worked?wtf is that shit? esport began in early 2011, streams began in late 2010, i watched doublelift playing in high elo immediatly after i started to play in 2011

but let me tell you something

Mages were way MORE FUN to play they fell off in late game due to high cd, and couldn't kill tanks while they could bring utility and burst on squishies, but as a tradeoff their midgame was much stronger. riot introced all this cdr while reducing ap, destroying balance and doing bandaid fixes like syndra Q ap ratio nerf cuz "wow she's doing too much dps for a burst mage"

something else that wasn't bullshit?

laning phase lasted 20 min during all those time it was a skill demonstration of 1v1 where junglers ganked a bit but couldn't gank constantly like right now you could outlane your oppenent, through roaming, farming, wave management, and all that macro.

nowday all of this disappeared, towers fall at 8 min in the game and those 2 things makes me prefering s1-s3 than right now

There weren't roles back in s1-s3, only unique and fair picks.

And the occasional busted overtuned champion on release that they nerfed to become garbage a month later.

When in season 3, supports were literally ward bots who sacrifice most of their income for wards, while running with t1 boots, philosopher's stone, and maybe a lucky emblem of valor. If sightstone is your ONLY source of vision, you were considered trolling back in the day. Also, don't forget to buy Oracle's Elixir 24/7 or else you're also trolling.

And hell, I don't think that shit was balanced at all because Sona was one of the only viable supports botlane because they literally get zero items. Janna was actually not #1, and Raka was legit trash. If you're picking something that's not an enchanter or maybe tank you'll NEVER have a chance to thrive botlane, ever. Not even your favorite mages or kill lane setups, because you have nearly zero income since they're all deposited to wards.

Anything today, in comparison, is actually much more balanced, despite people claiming that they are "the ADC's bitch". You at least get to have items and a lot of freedom to save your own ass, especially when getting caught. Back in the day, you can't even do that because you don't even have items.

when they could kill you at lvl 3 kek

except they still can today 8)

a lulu can just e q auto you, proc thunderlords, and apply ignite or something

Best princess EU1 votes

thunderlord is not taken on lulu

you didn't need thunderlord in s2 lulu did way more damage on AA Q and E (that dealt a base of 280 damage at max rank)

Nunu E had retarded base damage and slowed AS making an adc unable to trade with him taric isn't a damage threat anymore, all he does is stunning and that's it. Old taric bursted you down and then punched the shit out of you with old passive+AD steroid on ult Alistar also did more damage on his base spell+passive+ult giving free ad Sona could remove 30% of your hp with a bolt of Q Soraka was a meme

and janna janna shield gave 20 ad at lvl 1 and wasn't removed if shield got destroyed, making any adc unable to trade with her

overall, adcs also used to have lifesteal quints that were broken instead of ad+attack speed and that made support role way funnier than shield/heal bot that is nowday

so don't try to manipulate people with the support role, just because they bought wards doesn't mean they were worse than now

I don't know if balance was any better or worse, but I had the most fun with this game in season 5 and most of season 6. Preseason 7 kind of killed it for me.

Probably , but now is retarded. Everything is too fast. 90% of the players aren't korean reflex calculators

CaptainMarvelous? More like, Captain Obvious. ;)

Jokes aside, a good way to put into words what everyone with a working brain should know. And nice finishing quote.
