Riot can you diversify the support pool in solo queue outside thresh?

MunchCrunchLunch··3 votes·1,080 views

CAN YOU DO IT? SUCKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

no seriously. its been over a year. since i started. and thresh is picked more than 50% of the support pool. COMBINED.

climbed from bronze to silver to almost gold 1 now.

thresh is picked. in 50% of matches. no other support even comes close. to how often thresh is picked. no wait. no other champion. in solo queue (outside of the lcs big plays lee sins that lose 75% of their matchesi n low elo). is played as much as thresh overall.

to put it this way. thresh . is the solo queue version of pro play elise. the jack of all trades. hes picked more than any other support. its not even close.

literally get 3-4 people in a match saying that they main thresh.

Maybe you should check your claims before you make them.

http://champion.gg/statistics/#?sortBy=general.playPercent&order=descend&roleSort=Support

While Thresh is the highest playrate, the most popular half of that list is far more common than Thresh.

If you combine up the 13 lowest playrate supports, they have about the same playrate as Thresh.

The 10 most popular supports after thresh account for 6 times as many games as Thresh does.

Just because you have a cognitive bias doesn't mean Thresh is actually crowding out other supports. For a champion with such high playrate, he doesn't even perform as well compared to other supports.

that includes higher elo. am talking about gold and under. my experience.

HE IS CROWDING OUT OTHER SUPPORTS. whether he has problems or not. HE IS CROWDING out other supports.

Those statistics are taken from Plat+ games, which I know some say isn't high ELO, but it is the top 10% of ranked players.

Lolking stats, most popular champions in Master+ across all regions: http://www.lolking.net/charts?region=all&type=champion-popularity&range=weekly&map=sr&queue=1x1&league=challenger

Karma is more popular than Thresh. Janna and Bard are just as popular as Thresh, and Alistar and Nami are pretty close.

If you look at the NA-specific stats, it's a similar story. Thresh is one of the most popular supports but as common as several other choices.

You can type it in all caps as much as you want but in reality, it's just not happening. Have you ever heard of the term "cognitive bias"?

Personally, I think the support pool has the best diversity of any role in the game. You have almost two dozen viable picks right now.

Alistar Bard Blitzcrank Braum Janna Karma Leona Lulu Lux Morgana Nami Nautilus Poppy Sion Sona Soraka Taric Thresh Trundle Zilean Zyra are all viable and this doesn't even count the AP mids who can support.

Thresh. is picked. in 30%. 30 fucking percent. of all matches. how is that. not crowding out. the role. 30%.

back when lucian and ezreal had some 40% playrates. they got nerfed. just because of that reason (also pro play ) but cmon hes crowding out other supports.

Lugg1 votes

He wouldn't be picked near as much if people could dodge or just hide behind minions.

specter4241 votes

Sadly this is true. Its true because support is the only role that doesn't have to do anything to win the game.

Lugg1 votes

Yeah, I guess that's why the last two MVPs at Worlds were both supports.

specter4241 votes

Yea they give the support the participation ribbon like they do in elementary schools.

Lugg1 votes

Yeah, an MVP award is exactly the same thing as a participation ribbon.

Just man up and admit you're wrong.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Try a game without a support and see how it goes. There's more to their "participation" than simply existing to provide a heal/shield.

specter4241 votes

If the support afk'd the impact would be minimal. If anyone else afk'd the team would be seriously hurting.

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

...

You're joking right?

If the support afk'd the first thing your lane opponents would do is to jump on you and murder you if not force you to hide under tower the whole laning phase.

specter4241 votes

still a better situation than a solo laner of jung going afk and giving the enemy completely free reign

Lugg1 votes

I have won several games with a missing laner or jungler. I can't ever remember in 4 years of winning a game without a support.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

The support usually does very little damage. Yet they're still balanced with the same power budget as every other champion (though success on this front is... varied, to put it lightly). So where is all that power going if not into self-sufficient damage or defense? Straight to their lane partner in the form of buffs and utility. Damage wins games, but it's an awful lot harder to get in position and survive to dish it out without utility.

macdshifty1 votes

That's incorrect, last year was Marin, who was a top laner

Lugg1 votes

You are correct sir, it was the two previous to that.

He's saying Thresh is dominating the ranked play. Yeah, he is played around 30% but less than 10% of Thresh players have a winning record on him. I say let them keep playing him if they aren't winning with him.

thresh is pretty overloaded i ban him sometimes just beacuse i dont wanna deal with the 500k mastery thresh players

Lugg1 votes

Thresh is a very good support, but I'm not wasting a ban on possibly being matched up with one of the couple dozen Thresh players out there. Be more worried when a non-support main can take a Sion, Janna, or Sona and rape your team.

Nobodys asking you to waste a ban on him. This thread is about thresh crowding out every suppo

Lugg1 votes

I see Thresh as the Zed of supports. He is a total pain to deal with if you are facing a main, but pretty easy to beat if you are facing someone who isn't proficient with him.

I am fine with the 10% of games where I face a good Thresh since I have a good chance of winning the other 90% of games.

riot can't really change what people like to play without nerfing them into oblivion. even then it sometimes doesn't stop people. (see: nunu) thresh also has a very subpar winrate and even thresh mains hold only a ~51% winrate.

he is not too strong and there's really nothing riot can do to stop people from playing him, like i said. if anyone needs to be nerfed it's the point and click braindead supports that hold a 53-54% winrate for clicking on their adc. (Janna Soraka) obviously i'm exaggerating how little you need to do to be successful with them, but i'll tell you now thresh should be the least of your worries in solo queue.

tl;dr he's not unbalanced and if you want riot to somehow make him get picked less at least suggest a way how because complaining that a champion gets picked a lot is counterproductive and wastes EVERYONE's time

they can work on other champions to make them get picked more.

thresh offers his/her player. to do the most. of any support. thresh can play from behind. thresh has the best peel in the game. fantastic. cc. fantastic roaming and pick potential. and is strong in lane. and is ranged.

if you stop soraka from doing her 1 thing. which is healing. you got it by the balls. thresh is the jack of all trades. and the master of saving team mates and he has probably as much cc as leona.

what.

have you played ranked or normals? its thresh in 1/2 matches.

If anything it's gotten far more evened out ever since his release.

I remembered back in season 3-4 you see Thresh in 1 out of 2 games. Now it's just 1 out of 5.

Big difference.

bard has 1/3rd the playrate of thresh.

If you really don't want to see him, then ban him.

If you don't want to waste a ban on him, play support and play a support you think should have more attention.

If you don't want to do either, then queue up and be fine if someone wants thresh.

Anything is better than whining on the boards tbh.

And for what it's worth, I hardly see thresh.

ok i guess your the new thread derailer around. i bet your the same person. cereal box of doom or whatever.

lol

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

Lol, nah I make fun of him too. Sometimes he acts like you when he complains about trivial things that don't really matter. I have provided useful and factual information on posts without aggression or a show of superiority like Cereal, if you check my history. Or if you remember my little talk with you on Brand.

But you have a reputation of posting stuff like this, so my patience with you and other posters like you has greatly diminished.

However when you want to back up your claims with factual evidence and free of subjective bias, then I'm all ears.

Your anecdotal evidence is interesting, you must attract Thresh mains lol, but a simple search on Champion.gg shows that he has a 29% play rate in plat+ ranked this patch.

And you are correct, this is because of his playmaking potential plus low elos lack of coordination and mechanical skill allowing him to make easy picks.

However. This does not mean that he is crowding out other supports. You simply saw the numbers and drew an inaccurate conclusion that's all. Numbers may not lie, but they can always be interpreted a different way.

Will you stop fucking complaining about nonsense? Thresh isn't even very good right now, seriously. Jesus fucking christ.

Umbre0n1 votes

I'm in Silver and to be honest i almost never see Thresh. When i do they are usually terrible or their adc can not comprehend what the thresh is trying to do so the lane falls short. If anything i see Leona, Soraka, Bard, Braum, Zyra, Karma and even Malphite way more than i see Thresh
