Rank by role

Why do we consider a player to be the rank of their best role when that means that they are likely rated at a lower rank in any other role?

I think this is one of the reasons that Autofill is way off at the moment.

If someone is a Diamond Mid player but they are pretty much Bronze as a support, I can't blame them for not wanting to play as a support against Diamond players.

If the system ranked and matched players based on their rank in the role that they were in that specific role it would be a lot more fair.

I actually think this would also encourage players to improve their skills in each role individually, including support.

Maybe that Diamond player doesn't realize that he is Bronze level in support and seeing that would encourage them to learn the role so they can compete on a higher level overall.

A player can still claim that they are their highest rank and rewards can be given based on this as well (since that is how we do it now) but this would help people to have a better understanding of their own skills across different aspects of the game.

I remember Lyte discussing the New Champion Select (way before we actually got it of course) and saying it would calculate an alternative MMR when we are filled into something else. No idea if this is how it ended up working, though.

well but in this short time of auto fill while it may have created a stink for players in the end it will be helpful to the game... by people learning and experiencing other roles and becoming over all a better player.

But they are still being matched with opponents who are likely at a higher skill level than they are comfortable with.

Even if they are only a few divisions lower, it makes the balance of the game difficult to maintain.

I just think it would be better if the learning experience was more visible to players, and the matchmaking was more apparent as well.

If I am a Bronze support, I should know that I am a Bronze support, and not think that I am Diamond simply because I am playing against Diamond players. My teammates should also not be hurt by the fact that I am so under ranked in the role that I was auto filled into.

ok but that is happening now... like i said in time ... the diamond mid main... who is autofilled support and he cant play it at a diamond lvl as of now IN TIME will adapt and grown and learn and his skill will be better at that role...

and it s a trickle down effect

this will happen to all ranks.elos.roles etc over time... then if you get support or jungle when your adc main and you use to suck at jungle you would be better and a better over all player

But that is like saying if I play with Challengers all of the time, I am likely to eventually play like a challenger.

It's probably true, but it is an incredibly difficult position to put someone in, .. and it is not really all that fair to do to the challengers either.

It'd be cool if you could have 5 different ranks based on the role.

That way I can be bronze AD and Top and Gold for Jg/Mid lol. Would allow people to get better at roles playing agasnt people at the same skill level.

The problem though is that my game knowledge and macro would be better then that of a Bronze. So I'd have a advantage.

That would still reflect in your rank. You aren't necessarily going to start out in Bronze 5 and have to work your way up. I imagine that you would simply just have 10 placement matches for each role.

Although we may not still need to play a full 10 matches to be placed. 5 or 8 may be needed per role.

If you look at the way the placements work now, you may be able to que up for jungle and mid, and you may actually get those roles a majority of the time, but there is still a chance that you may be auto filled into AD, support, or top. Even if we assume that 7 of your 10 matches end up being your preferred role, those 3 matches could throw off your placement, and start you in Silver, despite having played at Gold level in your preferred role.

If we were to assume that during those 10 matches, you got placed in jungle for 5 of them, and you performed at gold level consistently, your placement could be in gold in that role. Doing this with each role would mean you would only need 25 placement matches in total, and each role would show a more accurate representation of your performance.

Then when you que up, if you get put into autofill and fill in for the top position, your would be matched according to your bronze ranking instead of your gold ranking.

Playing at bronze level against gold opponents would likely cause you to dislike the role, and feel as if you are bad at it, and may even make you not want to improve. If you are playing against enemies at your own level, you can improve from there and you may come to learn and appreciate that role even more.

I honestly don't see any reason for this to be considered a bad idea, aside from maybe being a bit more complex.
