I'm Scared to Play Ranked
At this point I feel as if ranked is a game of luck.
At this point I feel as if ranked is a game of luck.
Ranked in league feels like poker to me. Sometimes you get dealt a good hand and even if you play it well you still lose. However, if you consistently play well and make the right calls your bankroll should increase even though you lose big on some hands.
My real problem is I don't have enough experience to know what is just a bad streak and what is a sign that I'm playing like crap and need to take a break. I've lost 70 LP in a day and it feels freaking awful but my guess is that type of stuff happens often to people.
Some insight from some people who have played ranked for a couple seasons would be appreciated.
Learn when to dodge, also playing ranked for 3 seasons back before the new queue, you get a really good idea of how well someone is with carrying with a certain champ by the role they receive and how they hover / lock in a champion. Another "secret" is it seems Riot has ordered your ranked lobby according to MMR. The highest MMR rated player being first pick and so on..giving the lowest 3 mmr players on your team the ability to ban champions they don't do so well against. having said that your first pick could be tilted from higher brackets so do some research on na.op.gg and see maybe who might be tilted (if you are good at reading players in the lobby you won't need to do this) and maybe see who is playing a role they have no business being in.
That's actually a really good question: when to dodge?
It seems obvious when you have a troll but when should you dodge just because your teammates may be bad or your team comp is bad? I always research my allies in champion select and most of them have negative win rates, poor cs numbers, poor KDA, and poor kill participation. Usually at least one of them is on a bad losing streak. Obviously I can't dodge every game. So how do you decide when to dodge?
Also, anyone know of you can get demoted off a dodge if you are at 0 LP?
If you look at the champion select, and think "oh shit, that will be a hard game" dodge. The "best" way is to simple dodge when there is to much "bad matchups" or when your team pick highskill champion and are bad with them(check them).
Bad vayne in your team ? dodge. That guy picking yasuo top against trundle ? Dodge. They are master yi, and you don't have CCs ? dodge. It also works in a champion is "good" at your elo (AKA, if randoms knows how to counter them.) But this is probably overkill. Some matchups for you can also make the game depend to much on your teammates.
Sounds like a lot of dodging. I find myself dodging maybe 1 out of 40 games right now. What is a better number of games to dodge? How much did you dodge while ranking up? Is there such a thing as dodging too much?
dodging so often is pretty lame and you're not going to get any better. Unless your team is obviously trolling and attempting to lose on purpose, just roll with whatever happens in the draft.
screw that I'm siding with the guy saying dodge here. Those much less skilled than me have no right to be on my team in my opinion.
You're in Bronze and the enemy team picks Volibear? Dodge. It doesn't matter if you can handle him, Your teammates WILL feed him. That's just an example, but in general there are champions that are practically a guaranteed snowball in low elo.
If you ever see
dodge as fast as possible

Dodge the moment somebody picks Lee, Vayne, Riven, Zed or Yasuo in silver or bronze.
I think this is a real issue. Is ranked truly a crapshoot? Well, kind of, but not to the extent that ranked is completely luck based. The problem is that Riot is happy with a win rate of 55% + for climbing, meaning if you fall on the lower end of that, you're likely to climb very slowly. Often times, according to Riot, you're doing very well, but it doesn't feel that way. This compounds on top of some champion mechanics that feel plain unfair (Fizz's Playful/Trickster, LeBlanc's single/double Distortion, Zed's entire kit, take your pick) and you find yourself suddenly wondering how much of the game is in your control. The problem is that combing is going to be a total slog if you're not playing at a level 1-2+ divisions higher than the division you're playing in.
Riot focuses a lot on the "feel" of gameplay mechanics, and to their credit they usually do an amazing job. When you play Jinx, you feel like a hyperactive girl who loves blowing shit up and outsmarting the cops. When you play as Teemo (correctly) you fee like a detached, cold, calculating sociopath (it's in his lore; read it if you don't believe me). When you play the new Sion, you feel like an unstoppable, undead juggernaut who doesn't give two shits about how much damage you're taking. You're coming for them, and you're going to smash them to pieces with an ax... or even tear them apart with your bare hands.
However, what Riot can't seem to do is get their climbing to feel rewarding, or make ranked feel less like a crapshoot at lower levels. I feel like there is something Riot can do to combat this, especially with the current promo system. Promos could use some work. I've failed my bronze 4 promos at least 10-15 times becasue I go on a win streak, but it ends as soon as I enter my promos. As soon as I hit my promos, my entire team ends up with people going like... nunu support, adc soraka, and full juggernaut master yi in the jungle. Meanwhile, I stomp mid any my top laner does ok and it quickly becomes clear that this game is more than over from the start.
Even when I start with one win on my promos, I feel this fear to play ranked... but I do anyway. Well, I'm getting close to my 1X promo to get into bronze 4... maybe this time they'll let me have it.
lol +1 for Teemo
I feel you. I ran an experiment on 3 accounts over 2 years.
Created a brand new account, and selectively ranked. Very few games, but selective. Made it to Gold.
Created a new account, used selective ranking, but played more games..... Made it to Silver.
This is my main account. I have NEVER made it out of Bronze on this. Same player.
Ranked is luck based primarily. You have to increase your chances, and doing so goes against a lot of what RIot believes. You have to dodge. You have to dodge lots of games. The 3 LP lost is wayy less than the 15+ you lose believing you can inspire or carry a team of weak, inexperienced and immature players. Play less ranked, play more norms draft pick. Rank only when your're on a good roll in draft pick. This works for me. If u get lots of noobs and trolls in draft, there will be a similar pool in ranked. If you get a string of good games in draft, you're likely to get a similar experience in ranked. Champ select determines games. Noobs love a certain subset of champs. You see too many of them, you're on a sinking ship. Likewise, there are non-traditional game breakers. You see them on the enemy team, your're on a sinking ship.
Riot can't fix the ranked experience for a few reasons:
Goodluck ranking....
Well, good news! My promo luck was good and I'm in b4 now. Hopefully I don't get unlucky and get demoted. LOL
Master one champion you can get often and can take in two different roles, Pick them as often as you can. ranked will begin to feel like a normal game as opposed to a high pressure situation. Eventually you can repeat this process until you have a pool of several champions you feel comfortable taking anywhere no matter who your opponent is.
if you play high impact roles like mid assassin, roam the map making critical moves to snowball other lanes, and have high mechanical skill with said roles, then you can climb pretty fast
if you play slower roles like tank top, you will struggle to climb a lot more (exceptions do exist, such as shen or GP, both whom have a lot of global pressure). most tank tops/jungles struggle simply because they rely on your team knowing when to follow up, as well as your team not losing before you get there
simply put, if you play snowbally champions and consistently snowball with them, you can climb a lot faster than most players

The pain of a jungler main's life....
Yep Its a game of you hoping that your team doesn't contain.. A troll, A afk, Pissed off player who feeds, Or someone whos trying out a new champ ( Which everyone seems to do LEL 1st TIME TRYNDAMERE LETS GO RANKED KEK ) its sad but thats what it consists of now

Yes, or being against a 5 man premade when you go into the game as a solo player. FeelsBadMan

Recently i've been playing Super broken stuff in ranked just to make it a slight bit easier on myself ( Don't want to but im tired of winning lane and then another lane falling for "REASONS" ) Just play stuff like Darius, Tank Ekko, Volibear, Jax , Tryndamere , Brand, ETC Basicly anything that has either outrageous damage or outrageous abilities to survive the damage
I disagree, if you are not down to fight and battle it out with the enemy, you probably should stay away from ranked. I understand it feels like you are wasting time in norms, so sometimes people play ranked because "why not have it mean something if I am going to play already". Practice before going into ranked, master your champion before going into ranked, master your role before going into ranked.

I played around 200 games with Zed and I have around 400 games played in all.
completely disagree lol your point isnt invalid but mastering a champ takes weeks if not months to do in which time the season would be half over for some people who only play 10 to 20 hours a week they deserve to play ranked, i feel that premades should have their own que no one should have to go up against a skype squad as a solo player ever, and this league community is so toxic that trying to find people to play with really makes most people like myself want to try and revamp runescape so i can play with people who want to play a game rather then bitch for 20 mins about its his supports fault he went 0-13
Ranked is serious business. If you play casually and have casual game knowledge just play normals. You should at least be Mastery level 3 to play a champion in Ranked.
its a game nothing about this is serious that opinion right there is way threads like this happen people dont want play ranked cause you whine when someone is playing a new champ i agree yes try out the champ before joining ranked games with him but 8-10 games should do just fine learn and pay attention to what you could of done better and what you are doing right learn your counter picks and also make sure not pick something that doesnt fit if you are a great yasuo player but you are the only way of knocking up dont pick him unless you are counter picking and even then there could be better picks to fit in his place, DONT LISTEN TO PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO TELL YOU RANKED IS SERIOUS THIS IS JUST ANOTHER GAME PEOPLE TAKE TOO SERIOUS ITS NOTHING BUT THAT A GAME PLAY RANKED AS LEBLANC WITH AD RUNES IF YOU WANT BOSS ITS A GAME
Bro, ranked is serious business. If you don't feel so, just play normal draft. That is a huuuuge problem in ranked atm. Casual players feeling they have the right to join ranked games, be less than average with their champs, and game play, then say "Chill bro, its just a game". No. Ranked is where players want to test their skill against competition of equal or higher level, and to be REWARDED when successful.
Casual players just want to play a game, try some shit they saw in LCS or on a stream, and generally spoil the synergy required in ranked play.
To be fair, there must be a forum for casual players to just play for fun, to play without pressure, to enjoy the game. That forum is not RANKES queue.
I concur. Ranked is serious business.
All you have to do is make your own luck mate.

Make your own luck...sounds about right.

TRIPLE CRIT bb
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Its not luck, its destiny

I'm the same way, friendo. Sometimes I think to myself "Aw, yeah, I'm pretty good at league, I think I can get a decent ranking."
Then others times I know my bronze-bound ass is gonna get handed to me.
You cannot stop improving / learning. Only reason people don't climb is because they make the same mistakes and sometimes get punished, when you play better players you lose..there is a reason.
The point of a matchmaking system is to match you with teammates and opponents of similar skill, though. If you're consistently matched against "better players", it's not you that has a problem, it's Riot screwing up.
This is the song, sung by the statistical few, who make it out. Statistically, a very small portion of players will make it out based on their skill, IN CONJUNCTION with fortunate match-ups. This my friend, is not the case for over 75% of fairly decent players trapped in bronze. Some are junglers and support mains, that just will not progress regardless of how good they are, because of the role and champ pool.
A diamond player i know made the trip to bronze and discovered for himself, not every role or champ can escape Bronze, regardless of how skilled you are. He was amazed at the crap and lack of game intelligence displayed by bronze players generally. As well, he was shocked that there were very good players in the same tier.
I agree it is possible with certain roles....(mainly mid champs) and some adc's. Some high impact junglers can as well.
Honestly, Don't play ranked until you are very comfortable. The worst thing you can do is what a lot of people do which is jump into ranked early and end up in bronze. Then you have one heck of a climb to EVER get out of it. My roommate made that mistake before and he's still stuck there haha
Ranked is now "who has the better premade."
That's it.
Unless you have at least two other people you trust and play well with, preferably over voice chat, don't bother.
in a team based game it kinda should be who has the best pre made.
So rito should only allows premades 5 to play lol.
Its a team based game after all.
Games been popular for 5 years. if you don't have team yet you asked for it. When its time for group rewards, no one has a problem playing together. Incentive. Make not losing you incentive for grouping.
you are all rights to be scared its scary as fuck since its pure randomness now
play 5-15 games a day and start using trial and error to string up some winstreaks.
You are right tho, ranked is a game of luck. Learn to dodge.
To win ranked you just need 5 things
Still in silver doe ;-;
