I Feel Bad for Malzahar Mains

@Riot you've done it again, instead of simply tweaking a champ you have completely broken him. His kit is absolutely disgusting, his voidlings make it seem that you are against 3-4 players instead of one, and lastly you've made it so he is the #1 banned champ in all elos.

To all Malzahar mains I am sorry that you are no longer able to play your champion in ranked.

In RANKED? I couldn't play him in any matchmade game up until now because he is either Instalocked or banned ASAP.

He is not broken he is just falsely reworked at the moment from a Disruptor to a skirmisher.

Skirmishers aim to shred through any nearby enemy that approaches. Because Skirmishers lack high-end burst damage or reliable ways of closing in on high-priority targets, they are instead armed with situationally powerful defensive tools to survive in the fray, along with extreme sustained damage to cut down even the most durable targets.

There's somethin really off with his identity and gameplay style now.

Spoofghoul12 votes

yep he is a skirmisher

i also think thats what makes people fail vs him, they still recognise him as a burst mage while this is a completely false assumption

people should treat him more like a fiora, except one without true dmg and endless dashing but some range.

he doesnt even have that much range, and he is weak vs anything with more range which also has decent sustained damage/poke

like corki or xerath or ziggs

He has been Kassadin'd Malzahar is now in a state where he will be nerfed until he is probbably useless, and then buffed until anyone will complain again that he's OP.

As a Malzahar main, this isn't even what concerns me the most

What makes me concerned is the fact that Malzahar will certainly be nerfed to the point that he will be gutted and no longer playable. Just like what they did with Fiora

Which is a shame because old Malzahar was strong yet he was perfectly balanced.

Onkel Malte20 votes

He was so damn balanced he just received one barely noticable change within the last 2 years.

I think this isn't limited to only Malz. Struggling to understand half of the champion reworks done with the mage update. Many of them were viable and balanced, but then Riot had to break them to where they are now too strong (Malz) or too weak (Anivia).

I'm going to start calling this the Mordekaiser effect - When they remake a champ with a kit that is super toxic and damn near impossible to balance. Only to leave them gutted to come back a year later to rework them again.

I think we call that th Ryze effect. Ryze is either so strong faker spams it or Ryze is so bad no one wants to own him. Riot is incapable of an inbetween. Ryze with his 70 reworks....anothwr which is coming pretty soon for no good reason (starting to think Riot is just messing with us).

Wukong X Ahri5 votes

At least with Ryze they come back to him faster to rework him. Granted its always a half ass rework and ends up never fixing his core issues. Where others will sit for two or three years.

Idk i could be bias since this has happend to me on more than one of my mains now.

Mordekaiser(Some person who i really dislike at this point and wont even name wanted him to be a adc) Shen (I know you could say he stronger but he just doesn't feel right.)Sion (Doesn't even remind me of the Sion i used to love) Malzahar (only a matter of time before they gut him)

Now all i have left is Darius Lux Udyr (I'm not even sure how he is since item 1416 remake yeah i know everyone and their mother builds item 1402 but i don't really like it.

Riot was playing Malzahar on URF too much.

Decided he needed a bunch of voidlings at all times.

VOTE FOR TRUMP15 votes

This comment is coming from a Malzahar main with nearly 700K mastery points.

I adored playing Malzahar when he wasn't reworked. I feel as if he was completely balanced. The fact that you could punish his poor positioning so easily made him one of the more balanced mages in the game.

Giving him a passive that's essentially a free Banshee's Veil which active cooldown scales with level has made him much more forgiving to play and thus pretty broken. His swarms of voidlings also gives him way too much jungle sustain and objective control, and that's what makes him an even stronger pick in the current objective-based meta.

AD Jungle Malzahar was also a very viable pick for me, as well. If running AD Jungle Malzahar now, all you need to do is to smite his first voidling and he is rendered completely useless until he can spawn another one. I feel as if Riot has made Malzahar way too reliant on his voidlings for damage.

As much as I appreciate Riot Games for attempting to shine light on the forgotten champions to give them much more popularity, I believe that this rework to Malzahar was a little too far.

I can only wish that the old Malzahar was brought back; the one that was more fun, and at the same time, not as annoying to deal with if playing against one.

J Eevo14 votes

Please, the ones I feel bad for are Vlad and Swain mains, Malz gets banned in 90% of cases but there's still the odd 10% chance, and you can always just play normals. Vlad and Swain on the other hand got dumpstered so they can't pick them or they get called trolls for picking something unviable.

Karma Deified1 votes

At least on Vlad and Swain you feel like you're playing the champ rather than running some basic maintenance so that the champ plays for you.

At least Vlad and Swain still play like Vlad and Swain.

I'd rather they left Malzahar intact and just brutally nerfed him than this.

J Eevo2 votes

New Malz is fun though, I've played him and I enjoyed him way more than the previous iteration which was just an R bot. He's broken as all hell sure, but spawning an army of voidlings to eat a guy while you're a general nuisance to the enemy is actually kinda cool.

Karma Deified4 votes

Currently, anyone who claims the changes were good, references the absolute least favourable Malzahar playstyle as the thing being fixed with the rework.

J Eevo1 votes

Oh please, Malz kit was incomplete without his ultimate. Your W was mostly a dead spell, E was just a dot, the only redeeming quality was the Q which was a solid chunk of damage/cc with the drawback of being hard to hit. Without his ultimate up, you'd spam Q long range hoping it hits, and E anyone who comes nearby, or clear waves since you had no CC in your kit to get the full worthiness of your kit.

iTaLenTZ4 votes

His W was his BEST spell. You could zone, deal massive AoE damage and was the thing that defined him as the best tankmelter in the game right after Vayne. I got to diamond 2 maining malz as tankmelter focussing on his W. If you played him as burster his R would be the most important spell but that was too easy too counter to be reliable, especially in high eelo

J Eevo1 votes

How did you manage to convince the enemy to stay in the W? And I say convince because there's no other way without his R to make them stay unless you rely on your teammates for setup

iTaLenTZ5 votes

Rylais and teammates. But you could just sit in the back and wait for the enemy to engage and melt the one who goes in. He was always better at disengaging than engaging or following up. But yes, lacking cc apart from his ult was sometimes problematic and the thing with his W was that sometimes enemies could walk out of it without taking damage because it had a 0.25s or 0.5s delay before it started ticking damage

TheWoollyMammoth5 votes

You placed the W in a place the enemy NEEDED to step into during a teamfight. Combined with Rylais you could use it to make enemy team member take a good deal of damage. the enemy tank wants to engage your adc. Drop the W beneath your adc. Enemy adc needed to kite, get rylais drop the w where they will end up standing in a secound or 2.

He had the same kind of power sion has. Yes, you can avoid sions Q easily. but a good sion will q exactly where you are going to be in 2 secounds. Or where you need to be to do your job. Malz had the same properties. You could work the same thing with his E bounce and enemy lb's or zed. The moment they are forced to port back. (if you timed it right) It bounces right onto them, and they just caused their own death.

EDIT* You could easily tell a malz vet from a newby based on the use of the w and e control during a game. A good malz would "foresee" what you would do, and make you scream in fury as you just got yourself killed.

J Eevo1 votes

The difference between him and sion is that Sion's zone of control is dangerous because the Q chunks a lot and CCs. I wouldn't really consider the threat of getting one tick of Malz Q as a good deterrent, Viktor's W is a zone control tool, Anivia's R, you step in it, you run the risk of enabling their combo since it makes their kit stronger. Malz's W is a zone of control only if you have R which is what the rework wanted to change.

I honestly don't see why anyone is defending the W as a better skill than the voidlings, it was a morgana pool with %hp damage, there was nothing interesting about it.

TheWoollyMammoth4 votes

Late game it dealt a good deal of damage. I tend to build Liandries into Rylais. This combined with a Morello (depending on comp etc can be worth it.) Created a very large area that slowed and dealt a very large amount of damage to possibly more then one enemy at once. At which point it becomes a large AoE slow, with massive percentage hp damage and grievous wounds.

If you did land it on someone it would usually get 2-3 ticks off thanks to slow. Some fools would choose to completely disregard it. That would be the last time they did that all game. nobody wants to eat that kind of slow and cc in the middle of a teamfight. Landing his w mid-late would either let you get away from a bad engage. Or nip them with q and e. This would often be enough to kill a carry, and/or severely cripple a tank. I have ended sieges with it, stopped barons, halted dragons, and survived more ambushes then I care to tally.

Even one tick of the w mid-late was deadly if you had teammates. Especially when the enemy under estimated the raw potential of W as a damage source alone. I banked on people not respecting null zone when I didnt have my ult, as the slow and %hp gave me the chance to peel and help teamfight regardless of enemy QSS or tankyness. The W was a slow, that only unlocked after you got some gold. It was a carry skill, proper use, would allow you to carry.

The new voidlings meanwhile, get demolished in teamfights. The amount of damage getting flung around will often kill them before they can enter swarm. They scale worse then old w, and give you less zoning potential then old W. Early game they are neat but replacing null zone with them wasn't worth it.

Malz being a champ with a great deal of lane pressure thanks to his E-Q had no need for more lane pressure. He needed some form of late game scaling. After the laning phase (where malz was supposed to be easily ganked and spanked) and once you gathered some gold. You got a similar power spike to vayne getting a BotrK. The difference being that everyone respects vayne with her BotrK, few respected Malz's W zone. Many people thought it was useless without his ult. Many people died because of their lack of experience playing against or as malz.

Karma Deified7 votes

This exactly. A skilled Malzahar could dominate fights with his level of control.

And it was completely earned when he did it. There's a ton of innate counterplay to control champs.

These people who come around saying he's just an ult don't get the tactical gameplay that was stripped away from Malzahar.

In the best scenario, Malzahar wins a fight without using his ult or with his ult used to secure an escaping enemy.

Malzahar's rework just straight up dumbed the champion down.

  • Positioning? Don't worry, fail safe included.
  • Smart use of abilities to zone and deal damage? Forget it, cast twice and AI will do the rest.
  • Maximizing AoE potential? No problem, Ult does it automatically
  • Kiting? Press W to kite.

The one good change was making E extendable.

As a Malzahar main, I thank thee.

I was worried about his rework when Riot announced it. Not because of the changes necessarily, but because it would put him in the spotlight. I enjoyed how he was in a state of neutrality. He wasn't too weak that I couldn't play him, nor too strong for many nerfs to him. But now that he's popular enough, Riot won't ignore him anymore.

I just hope he doesn't become gutted. But recent history has me believe it is....................Malzahar Inevitable

Yeah. It really freaking sucks. I loved having a pick that wasn't seen often and knowing him so well that I was able to dominate most every lane matchup. Now I have no idea what's going to happen to him

Sigh, old Malz was my favorite mage (and the only one I could play reliably). Supposedly new Malz is supposed to be op but the few times I've even been able to play him he doesn't feel right anymore. Can't get him to work for me :(

warmcorntortilla8 votes

I'm trying so hard to like his new kit. I like the idea they were going for--after all, now the dream of 'an army of Void-poros' can finally become reality. It's cute and amusing walking around with 5, 6, 7 little Void-porolings scampering along behind you.

However, once the thrill wears off, you're left with a champion that will be unbalanceable. If anything, his combo is even worse than it was before--assuming they don't have QSS. By the time the suppression comes off, your horde of voidlings will have done the 'burst' for you. He's great at 1v1ing melee laners in top lane. However, I miss his old W. People have said that it 'had no place', or that you 'never used it outside of his ult' which is... complete and utter bullshit. I always thought he transitioned beautifully from a spectacular duelist to a late-game siege mage, laying down qs and ws to weaken the enemy team on their tower with his range.

I always thought Malzahar was sort of like a Venus flytrap. Relatively harmless (without his flash combo) until you get too close, or make a mistake. He was easy to punish, and punished people hard.

I played one matchmade game where I wanted to play him, but the other team got him first. Not wanting to lane against my main, I switched with somebody to take support, and let them have mid. My poor Brand got dumpstered by him (muahahaha) but that was the sad thing... even though the Malz won lane, he couldn't do anything else with it in teamfights. He can't keep any voidlings up, and since his E and R are single-target, he now only has his q to contribute to AOE teamfights, and his ult as pithy ADC crowd control.

Before there was all this payoff for landing the combo correctly. If you suppressed someone off your naughty pool, or didn't silence them, or didn't get aids off, you would not kill your target. Now you just brute-force your way to winning and constantly look for someone stupid to catch so you can actually get a voidling or two outside of lane or the jungle.

AP, lane Malzahar... the one you play against Yasuo and Zed... is dead. Once he's been nerf-hammered into oblivion, he will be stuck in the jungle and top lane, where he can actually have a chance of reaching his target. Ahri, Lux, Xerath, Ziggs... basically any champion with more than one form of CC in their kit and any amount of range will shit on him, and any mid-mage now has more damage and utility than he does. This whole thing was to have obvious reasons to pick a champion. Why the hell would you pick Malzahar now? I mean, once he's been nerfed and it isn't a free win anymore... why pick him? Because he has pets? Because of his passive? A passive you can buy in the store?

Before I picked him if the enemy mid was a mobile assassin, because the waveclear and burst suppress could ensure that you could deal with them and keep them from roaming bot lane and fucking your adc. Before I picked him into tanky teams because his aoe %hp damage was superb. Before I picked him into early-game teams because I knew I would outscale them (Ryalai's for utility... but now AP malz sucks ass...) with damage and utility.

Now what does he do? What does he do WELL? Once the Voidling problem is nerfed... there will be no damn reason to pick him.

Onkel Malte5 votes

You summed that up exeptionally well He's just a shadow of his former self. He deals tons of damage on the wrong spell (once it finally has ramped up). And was reduced from an impactful Mage to a Void-cloning-machine.item 3512

And - as you said - besides giving your enemy the most annoying and frustrating laning phase he ever had there is no reason I would pick him anymore because it isn't funny anymore to play him.

iTaLenTZ6 votes

I have been trying to say this even before his rework went live. I made several threads about Malzahar but all the community did was downvoting me and telling me his rework was fine and I shouldn't complain. Also Repertoir never responded to any of them while I have 450K mastery points and main Malz in high diamond so I know what I am talking about. Well there you go now. I totally agree he has no strategic niche outside of objective control and once he gets nerfed and other champs can do that beter there will be zero reason to ever pick him.

Zane Zephyr7 votes

I have 150k points with Malzahar because he is the champion that got me to actually play league and I have mained him since.

I am not too happy with his rework and I don't really enjoy playing him like I did before his rework. I am not a fan of it. I don't see myself playing him too often anymore because it's just not the same to me.

450,000 mastery with malz here, all i wanted for him this entire time was a new skin, then they went and reworked him and is now perma banned every game, which I knew was gonna happen months ago.

As a Malz since S2 I dont even like the changes, I'm so used to spamming spells to spawn voidlings and have them out at all times, now I cant do that. He's not as amazing as he was before and supposedly "OP" now. He's not that bad just know how to counter him for christ sake

Bellows6 votes

But hes so gankable though. I squash him everygame. Ive YET to play a ranked game that i lost when malzahar was on the enemy team. Everytime I see malz on the enemy team, they loose. IDK why, but he lacks SOMETHING thats important.

iTaLenTZ4 votes

He lacks a coherent kit and damage

Aniela5 votes

Malzahar is my go to mid-laner and the closest thing I have to a midlane main. I've yet to try the reworked Malzahar but old malzahar was my favorite. He was simple and strong, he had clear and significant weaknesses. He was flexible - you could opt for early game TLD+FlatPen for damage or go DFT instead.

I fear for the future of Malzahar. His W was half-assedly pushed onto his ult, a mechanical buff in that you no longer need to cast it but a major damage nerf. His passive makes BV cry, and it took away his main weaknesses.

This was very poorly done in my eyes overall. I pray he isn't needed too hard but my faith in Riot isn't often rewarded.

Onkel Malte4 votes

The big mistake is that they changed his whole playstyle. Most mages got just a new passive or a similar spell (Vlad E) While Malz got this ridiculous new passive and his new W.

I'm quite pissed about his changes as his old kit was fun for me, but the new one feels so unsatisfying. You spawn a voilding hoping he will reach the champ or kill a minion and that's mostly a lucky scenario.

I might go for Ahri, because this version of Malzahar absolutely lacks any satisfaction.

TheWoollyMammoth4 votes

In all fairness, I can't blame @RiotRep for this. Rep tried really hard to make malz what his mains wanted, while meeting the demands of riot to "update" his kit. I am grateful that Rep tried, and considering what could have happened I think Rep did a fantastic job. Rep was constantly interacting with us to try and get a feel of what needed to stay. It wasnt like a couple other reworks.

This being said. I havent had the chance to play malz in live since the new patch. perma ban being what it is. but really, I would be happiest if the kept the new visuals, but returned his old kit. Keeping in mind that I do not believe Rep earned ANY negativity in all of this. I blame the crew that decided that old champs with stable kits needed to be changed.

I'm sad it ended this way. but I also have to point out when it comes to power. Malz was always able to solo drag at level 3. It was a trademark of a good ad malz player. Now everyone and their mother can do it....

iTaLenTZ7 votes

Bullshit. He never replied to a single thread made by Malz mains. He had his mind already set before we could even interact with him. He never understood the champ, completely misjudged how much we care about the voidlings and ruined the champs identity and what made him fun to play for us Malz mains. He only listened to those who were on the same boat and ignored everyone else. Fuck that guy.

TheWoollyMammoth9 votes

He replied heavily to a few threads I was in and started. I do agree that there was some really patronizing stuff coming out of him when it came to what a good malz could do with his combo's. I never felt QSS was a true counter to malz. Nor was malz winning games with his ult flash combo. Alot of stuff only true mains would pick up. I wager I've played a couple thousand malz games over the years, and I definitely felt insulted by some of the crap that was spread. But I still think that Rep communicated. The ult,Q, E all stayed as wanted. the price we payed was damage reductions and spotlight. I would take a kit revert over the new kit.

It is true that he wasn't always mechanically complex, but when the enemy team had a brain and qss'd or worked cc. It took skill baiting, timing positioning.... everything really. To really shine with him in game. Looking simple doesn't equal being simple, but try drilling that through the skulls of most reds. The only vibe the reds gave off is "nerf malz op" until a qss was bought. Then they think malz was instantly trash tier. They were HORRIDLY wrong, but made up their minds to rework him. At least Rep tried to let us choose the between the bitter or sweet poisons. (unlike certain other reds)

I chose the sweet one. With hopes that the numbers can be worked and malz (in game) would remain. But the spotlight turned sweet to sour, and all hopes are gone.

Either way, the poison started to work, now we start to drop.

The land may melt, the sea may swell, the sky may fall... but changes will come, and with them, the Malzahar we loved will be erased, our only reminder being the match history.
