@Meddler/Scruffy/etc. - Need your opinion on a "Cursed Power" mechanic

This is something I'd been thinking of when looking at stuff like Metroid Prime 3, Blazblue, etc. It'd basically be a mechanic where you toggle on an ability to increase the power of your other abilities, but build up a "Corruption meter" that, if maxed out, causes you a severe negative effect.

I don't have all the specifics yet, but here's a rough draft of the mechanic:

#Cursed Power Toggle: Places you into a Cursed state, granting all of your basic abilities drastically increased power and/or bonus effects. However, while in your Cursed state, you generate Corruption every second and every time you use an ability. If your Corruption should reach or exceed X, you receive a severe negative effect for a limited time.

You may toggle off Cursed Power at any time before you exceed your Corruption limit, but cannot reactivate it again until your Corruption level is back to 0. While toggled off, you bleed off Y Corruption per second. You do not generate Corruption while Cursed Power is toggled off.

What are your thoughts to a mechanic like this one? Is it too similar to Gnar's Rage or Rumble's Heat? Or could it be its own thing?

EDIT: Thought of an alternate version.

#Cursed Power Places you in a Cursed state, granting all of your basic abilities improved power and/or bonus effects, but also causing you to take increased damage. While in your Cursed state, you constantly generate Corruption every second (rate gradually increases over time). Upon reaching 100 Corruption, you enter a brief stasis, becoming untargetable and invulnerable, but unable to take any actions, healing yourself during this time.

Hitting enemies with basic attacks and abilities reduces your Corruption by fixed amounts. Lasts until you reach 100 Corruption.

This version would cause you to inevitably overload, forcing you to make the most of the duration and be aggressive to keep it going for as long as possible. I fear, however, that this version may be too similar to Shyvana's Dragon Form.

unlike rumble though this mechanic would allow you to choose to build corruption from spells or not.

Exactly, though if you aren't building Corruption up, you're missing out on some serious power.

This differs a bit in that you don't always generate Corruption; only when you toggle on your R ability. Also, while your R is toggled on, you constantly generate Corruption, whereas Rumble only generates Heat when he uses an ability.

The idea of it is that the Champion in question is taking a huge risk by tapping into an evil power, knowing that if it's used for too long or used too much, it'll have serious consequences.

Oh, I get it. I'm just saying that the idea of a champion that builds up a resource, then pays a heavy price for it if they do it too much is definitely Rumble's thing, maybe with a little bit of Gnar in there. It doesn't seem like a huge risk, though, since you can pick when to turn it on and off, and you can't turn it back on until you have 0. Honestly, it just seems mostly like Karma ult, where you can empower your abilities every so often.

The bit on toggling it off might need some tweaking to make the risk more real. Maybe if you go past a certain threshold, you can't turn it off and you'll inevitably go to "full corruption".

It's all rough stuff for now, so nothing's final.
