What's with Skarner's sudden popularity in the LCS?

This kinda came out of the blue. Here I was, complaining about how Riot had left my favorite scorpion to dust and be forgotten.

And suddenly, I see these pro teams picking Skarner out of nowhere, which made me glad that my main is getting some more exposure (Although I don't agree with their builds. But what do I know?). But I don't understand why though.

Is it the 8.1 buffs? I mean yeah, that was quite a good buff, adding 0.5 second to his stun. But I still thought it was insignificant, because while he got himself a buff, Skarner still doesn't offer the same amount of utility that Sejuani, Zac, Lee Sin and Elise offers. Even then, if the opposing team builds QSS, Skarner becomes worthless.

Or is it the unsealed spellbook keystone? Even then, his only form of engage and gapclosing is the flash ult. So in that aspect, he still gets outclassed by Zac and Sejuani.

So why do you think Skarner suddenly got picked more in LCS?

He's super flavor of the month.

Nightblue3 Iwdominate Pants are Dragon and a ton of other junglers one tricked skarner to challenger last week. It was like 12 people or something that made it to challenger playing 60% of their games as ghost smite skarner running some cheesy runes.

So I Imagine the pro's found of the same thing those players did. I'd expect a nerf for skarner in 8.5

i main him and ill take him top jungle supp and such, i mean i can solo drag as soon as i get the first upgrade to drag. and he can solo rift as soon as it spawns with no issues, the .5 to his stun isnt anything and half the time people do it wrong anyway. plus if i supp approach velocity is a must for jungle and supp because it procs off your e and if u hit some one with slow smite you move faster
