@Riot, re: AP Sion question

Hey Rioteers, I am curious. Is there a reason Sion's AP ratios are so low? It seems like his kit could function very healthily with larger ratios allowing for AP builds.

For example, what if his W damage/shield ratios were increased to 1.0/0.5 and his E ratio was increased to 0.5 (0.65 on minion toss)? This would give him a solid alternate build that linked back to old ap sion, but since there is almost 0 synergy between ap items and tank stats, it is unlikely that abuse cases would emerge. This is especially true now that trinity force no longer grants any AP. Heck, there are only two items in the game now that grant both AP and AD, and neither synergies well with sion, so I don't really see the harm on it.

Just a thought. Thanks for your time.

Lots of Champions have AP scalings that they never actually use. Generally, it is on "utility" spells that are not supposed to scale, so they get a useless scaling.

I wonder why a useless scaling is better than no scaling at all, but it is safe to treat these spells as if they had no scalings. Sion's E (the Roar) is a typical example: it's to be used for the slow and Armor shred, not really for the damage. Jinx's chompers also have an AP scaling, but are used only for the root, not for the damage.

Those scalings used to be because of sheen items. Since sheen lost its AP, 90% of those scalings no longer make sense. I think that sion is in a bit of a unique position, though, in that he historically had an AP build. I feel like it would be easy -- and healthy -- to give him that alternative build again. Riot has stated on numerous occasions that they support and enjoy alternate build on a character as long as those builds are beneficial to the game.

I don't think Jinx ever build Triforce, for instance. No time to look for other examples right now, but I'm pretty sure this is not an exception.
