riven's gameplay is too dependant on matchup

Knight SoIaire ··5 votes·944 views

get a good matchup ... proceed to faceroll get a bad matchup ... pray for the mercy of your jungler and even that might not help

and i dont see her having many matchups that rely on her playing much better than her enemy ... most of them is either stomp or get stomped

in the end its hardly possible for riven to win a bad matchup and its hard for her to lose the easy ones unless you will find a realy pesky jungler wchich isnt champion dependant

in teamfights and onwards its the player that does stuff ... but early game your possibilities are realy matchup dependant i think that riot should emphasize her gameplay to be more reliant on a player than a matchup ... especialy for a champion with such a high outplay potential

Isn't this true for most melee champions with no poke skills?

most of them is fine they have easy matchups that can still go bad for them if they derp it purely skill dependant matchups and couple insanely hard matchups vs stuff like gnar or other cancers that they can still win if enemy derps it

I'm not sure how you would do that though. She's a light fighter, and has no built in sustain. So her counters are going to be just about anyone she can't burst down. Particularly Tanks who benefit from Rushing Armor.

Similarly, any Carry oriented Toplaner does not want to rush defensive items. And thus, easy to snowball off of. Teemo doesn't want to build defenses at all, Neither does any top lane mage. And someone like Jax and Irelia really wantss their Tri force + BotRK before getting tanky.

The only way to really balance that is to make Riven less of a light fighter, which is basically gutting her core Identity.

reduce her early damage and buff her early shield

then she wouldnt need to burst her enemies down and could take some hits

she still would be capable to build offense as she does currently and still would be a light fighter what pushes her into this hit or miss playstyle is the fact that her options were reduced to "burst the enemy laner down and snowball like mad" due to riot hitting only her defense and leaving the offense (see yasuo)

in fact riven is designed quite good when it comes to ballancing her ... there is a load of space in her kit that allows you to change her in loads of ways with simple number changes

Not sure that would fix all her problems though. As big as her shield can get just by scaling AD, it doesn't have that great a duration. So it's only really that good at handling Burst.

As a light fighter she should be more reliant on CC and Mobility to counter damage. So You might consider increasing the stun duration on her W as well.

And lastly, If you basically don't allow her to have such good burst, You would have to increase her sustain presence in lane. That would mean returning some of her lost HP Regen.

But over all, Her light fighter kit should make her more Burst than Duelist. Otherwise, she would lose the core aspects of her play style. That's why her damage has been front loaded more like an Assassin.

the amount isnt the only thing you can tweak ... there is also duration, cooldown, dash speed, dash distance

thats why i called her well designed from ballance standpoint ... there is a load of area you can shift her power on. you can basicaly shape her into whatever you want

Literally every champion has good and bad match ups, being a squishy melee means that when you lose lane you tend to lose it hard, this is not a problem, it's known risk vs reward.

if they make her less matchup dependent, they have to make it so she doesn't snowball as hard.

She has no bad matchup. There is no matchup where she can't farm safely atleast. Bad matchup does not mean " a champ she cant kill 5 times in lane". Renekton and Darius or Olaf can trade her with early without getting outdamaged but they can never deny her farm or xp like Riven can do to so many toplaners.

if you cant fight your enemy on par its a bad matchup for you

in bad matchups you are ususualy forced to play defensively and wait for your enemy to missplay rather hard or for your jungler

when you farm safely ... you miss some cs ... more or less depending on specific situation this can lead to riven getting behind since she scales with that ad rather hard ... denying gold = denying ad

but the situation you described is just a case of mobile champion being put on a lane with less mobile one she gets the farm cause she cant be punished so easily ... and she bullies becuase others cant escape her punishment

i dont think that this might be such a bad thing thou ... might just be a champion characteristic

Thing is she won't miss any cs with her easy farming mechanics...if she has the advantage she can deny you 50 creeps but if you have the stronger all in she can still farm safely and keep up in cs with you. Most people are just used to stomping their lane with Riven and have 3 kills at 15 minutes aswell as 50 more cs so they think when they are 0-0 and even in cs against the enemy Renekton or Olaf or Darius or whatever "lanebully" they are playing against a counter.

It is all about risk/reward. With Riven the reward is quite large. So to keep things balanced so is the risk in picking/playing her.

but is that a good thing ?

other high risk/high reward champions seems to have their risk in doing risky stuff not being matchup dependant

the matchups can add additional dificulty to their playstyle ... but they dont have that big of an impact when it comes to how well yare you going to do in game
