Is Sona really that bad atm?

I know I'm only Silver III atm, but I was playing support for the first two games in my ranked session today. Both went like this:

Me: adc/sup pref...if I'm supporting, I'm using Sona. Ally: Sona? NO! She's bad. Don't use her. Use Thresh. Leona... Me: I don't have any of them, and I mainly use Sona...>_>

And then we won and my kda's like 5:1 or something nice looking like that. I don't mind winning, but apparently Sona's bad in the game right now. Like, really bad. Is she really that far off the radar that I'm looking like Poppy players at this point? Is she really in need of buffs that bad? Most people tell me to even pick Nami, but I would rather have Sona's auras and damage output than just be flopping around after I cast my bubble with Nami.

What's wrong with Sona? What can be done to fix it?

Idk I've picked Soraka/Janna/Caitlyn and been told they're all bad and "gg noob pick". Folks will be folks.

Think it's just cause we're in silver lol. People don't seem to realize just about everything can work in this elo and stomp. My best games have been with Fiora or Zac support, Sona's far from bad.

I do that already. Definitely my favorite build. People keep telling me to go tank when I play Sona, with health items and Frozen Heart, but why do that when I'm already used to not dying anyway? I average about 2/4.5/16 a game while never building more health than a Ruby Sightstone can give me. No need for armor, imo.

All of her benefits scale with ap.... and positioning. You build Ap and movement on her. Screw the sightstone even unless you're behind.

sona is much better at lower elo rather than higher elo, and you see her decreased play as you climb... more situational, she is very squishy, she is very slow (this new big tanky waddling frog of a support has a higher base speed than she does), she telegraphs her attacks, they are easily shielded because of the slow travel speed, and she has high mana maintenance issues....

not to say she does not have her good points, she does and i love her...

hahaha, i sometimes do (ish) but thats just it right.... as fast as the running hospital, most effective at aa range (550), both slower than the froggy tanky new champ

Mmmmmmmmmm I wouldn't say she is "that bad" but the problem is more she isn't....that good.

She is the low side of balanced, which is to say, she is balanced, but if they were to nerf her any further from where she currently sits, she would be weak.

She can heal, and that's okay, she can poke, and that's okay, and she has a decent cc ult, and that's okay.

Maybe you see where I was going with that, because most of what she does is okay. She doesn't have anything that will wow you, or make big plays. She does her job, and that is okay.

She's still a fantastic pick for a poke + sustain composition. Still a good option for adc matches like Caitlyn. She's just squishy for the tank meta and doesn't offer as much as the common supports do right now for that reason (Thresh + Leona can peel hard).

Sona isn't a bad champion. She has decent poke with sustain and a fantastic team fighting ult.

But, Sona lacks hard cc and utility in her kit that a lot of meta supports have. Think Thresh, Morgana, Nami, Bard, Nautilus, Blitzcrank, Annie, Zyra, Lulu - All of these champions have cc that can lock down a target or peel for the adc. Besides her ult and the slow from Song of Celerity's power chord, you have no way to peel or protect your squishies during a gank or flank.

Sona is also very low mobility as well as squishy, and while you can get away with it in Silver, the higher you go the more your enemy team will punish you for it. Sona can definitely still work in higher elo, but it will require great caution and positioning, otherwise you are just a free kill.

Also, we have to acknowledge that Sona has lost a lot of power since her re-work and it's ensuing nerfs.

Sona will die a lot in lane. Doesn't matter though, she'll make you win every team fight. She's borderline OP actually.

She's not Zilean tier but this meta is really bad for her. Due her nerfs she functions better with a lot of AP, but because a lot of champions right now are very beefy, she can't just go in and try to delete someone with AA-Q-Powerchord Lichbane. If you position badly, you'll get blown up. The higher in elo you go, the harsher you get punished for bad positioning. That's one of the reasons her pickrate declines so much as you go up.

Not necessarily. She's hard to balance because of her binary kit, but not borderline OP lol.

Those three are actually really good right now; especially Janna.

Considering that's the only two you could name off the top of your head from that game, they just wanted you to pick a FotM/uber-popular support. People are thirsty (especially in Silver elo) and they want hard-engage supports. Since that's popular, Sona has a rough time in that elo due to those being her counter, since her sustain and poke combination just isn't strong enough to beat an all-in. In higher elos, when you face a larger variety of supports, it should get a little easier to play Sona.

But screw them.

Play what you're good at, not what others tell you to.

She is bad.

Before the nerfs she was the only support i actually kinda feared. Now i have no one to contest me in bot lane as a support other then a morgana/sivir combo, morgana or sivir alone is useless.
