What is baron even for?

If rift herald is for killing inhibitor turrets at this game pace... People don't really need baron to end off of multiple inhibitors down.
Can we slow down the game a bit please?

All jokes aside from what I've seen is that baron is used for closing out games. however people seem to want to use it for split pushing more than running it down mid and ending the game.
